Subject: help with PCI modem (Newcom 56K V.90 data/fax)
Date: Thu, 04 Mar 1999 21:07:10 GMT

Hello,

My old 33.6 modem got fried during the storm yesterday, so I got a new modem,
but of course, I can't get it to work with Linux.

The modem is Newcom 56k pfx data/fax PCI V.90, internal, and _not_ WinModem,
and the box says 'Plug & Play'.

Now I'm having trouble getting Linux to see it (BIOS can see it as 'Simple
COMM. Device' with IRQ 3).

The error I get when pppd tries to talk to it is:

tcgetattr: Input/output error(5)
Exit.

I also have /dev/modem symlinked to cua2, although that is probably bad
because this is a PCI modem and doesn't point to a COM port (from what I
understand about hardware...I could be wrong, I'm no expert) (so what should
I do with /dev/modem ?)

Does anyone know what I need to do to get Linux to see this new modem? What
are some of the files that I may need to play with? I only found /etc/ppp/*
stuff, but I don't think I need to touch anything there. Besides that I see
how pppd and chat are invoked, but I don't think I can't do anything by
messing with those.

This is on Red Hat 5.1, kernel 2.0.35

Any help would be very much appreciated!

Thanks,

Otis

Hi,

We have device with P5 motherboard and up to 8 proprietary boards on
PCI bus and
we plan to run Linux on this thing. We'll need to access these boards
from our programs.

Could somebody, please point me to some good info on how to access the
PCI devices,
how to write drivers to such a devices etc.?
Any good book on this topic?

Thanks in advance,

Is this a SCSI device? I have a Travan TR-4 drive and it works great with SCSI
tape support compiled into the kernel.

Rather than re-invent the wheel, how would you like a pre-built,
hardware-based RAID 0/1/5 solution that uses a SCSI interface?

I got that computer on my desk. The modifications to the processor card
were made by my father -- he's a dentist and good with small drilling
jobs. The slot 1 processors are from computernerd, each cooled with a big
fan and guaranteed to 464mHz. System has been tested to be stable (with
the right memory) to 103/504mHz. We run Windows for days, and the
operating system turned out to be more stable higher the processor/bus
speed! The plan is to keep it at 464mHz for Linux and hardware
reliability purposes.

Subject: How compatible is my Win9x system (newbie)

A little help for a linux novice...

I'd like to install Linux/GNOME as a second operating system (don't know
which distribution yet) on my Win98 system. I tried installing RedHat 5.1
several months ago but got discouraged after I ran into compatability problems
with my video cards. I'd really like to use Linux/GNOME as my primary
operating system and just keep Win98 around for games, so if anybody could
give my comments on how my various system components will fair under linux,
the help would be much appreciated. Here is my current system setup:

Intel Pentium II 400 MHz, 128 MB RAM
2 IDE Hard Drives, 5.2 & 3.8 gigs
IDE CD-ROM
IDE CD-R
Internal SCSI Iomega Zip 100 drive on the ZipZoom SCSI adapter
Generic 56k internal PCI modem

*Diamond Stealth II G460 AGP video card - i740 controler (this is what gave
        me trouble the last time)
*2 Diamond Monster II SLI 3D accelerators (don't really expect these to work,
        will they cause any conflicts?)
*Diamond MX300 (would like to get at least SB compatability)

Is it possible to get a decent configuration running on this hardware? Like I
said, I'll keep Win98 as a second operating system for games, so I don't need
any of the bells and whistles in the graphics/sound department, but would like
to get at least basic support. Thx

The F0 0F bug was the first two instructions of a 32-bit instruction that
would lock all P5 processors. It locked the bus as it would in a dual CPU
configuration, but since it was a full 32-bit instruction and no 2nd CPU
was there, there is no way to unlock the bus.

The linux kernel inplemented a work around in 5 hours. FreeBSD beat us,
they had there fix in 3. I have not yet heard if microsoft has fixed it.
This bug is 2 yrs old.

No, a fast CPU can't make up for a 3D card's slow fill rate. A system
is as slow as its worst bottleneck.

>A fast CPU wont make those TNT
>renderings look nicer thou!

I disagree about the G200 looking better than the TNT. And I've owned
both a Millennium G200 and a CL TNT and compared them back-to-back in
1600x1200 and in plenty of games. IMO, visual quality is about the
same, Linux support is now solid for both, but the TNT is noticably
faster in Win95 3D games. (Still waiting for accelerated 3D drivers
for both under Linux.)

True, the G200 is a solid 2D card. But so is the TNT.

The differences are probably larger in Linux due to shakier driver
support. But, yeah, 2D GUI speed is pretty much a solved problem.
The only time I've had problems with 2D speed lately was when I was
using the VESA frame buffer and fbxserver on the G200, before SuSE
put out their accelerated G200 driver. Non-accelerated 2D is still
slow.  :->

Subject: Anyplace cheaper than Zenon?
Date: Thu, 04 Mar 1999 22:44:19 GMT

I've ordered several systems from Zenon. And although I despised them for
their total lack of any courtesy to the customer and their worse than non
existent tech support, I am compelled to buy from them because you can
specify EXACTLY what you're getting and it's cheap.. it's like building your
own system w/o the hassle. And they dont force you to buy Win98 like
everyplace else (Linux user here) and pay 100 bucks extra for that worthless
piece of crap.

Well, recently, I just got fed up with them and am loathe to give them any
more business.

So does anyone happen to know of another company that is like zenon with
similar pricing, where i can specify everything from the make/model of
motherboard right down the the modem manufacturer for a really cheap price.

I dont care if they have no tech support or anything.. as long as they arent
totally rude like Zenon and have no concept of promoting customer loyalty.

Thanks

Mike

Subject: Linux compatible external modems with remote wakeup
Date: Fri, 5 Mar 1999 22:05:53 -0330

Hello,

I am looking for a good Linux compatible modem with remote wakeup

capabilities or alternatively, a non-modem device for the sole

purpose of performing remote wakeup (AKA cold bootup) of a PC

via a phone line (there should be a way of doing this by talking

to the motherboard at least with ATX compatible devices).

The caller would enter a secret code on the phone shortly after

calling the computer's phone line. This action would power on the PC.

Once the PC powers up an Expect script can run shortly after init

starts and ask the user (if the user is there) whether to dial an ISP or

not (with dialing out as the default). If the user is not in front of the

PC that means the user is dialing from a remote location so the computer

would dial the ISP, as this would be the default action to be taken by

the Expect script. Then the Expect script could proceed and e-mail the

user at the remote site the possibly dynamically allocated IP address

assigned to the computer by the ISP. Assuming that the computer is not

configured as a firewall and that telnetd is running on the PC, the user

at the remote site can telnet into their box shortly after phoning the PC,

remembering to hang up in time before the PC's modem or other starts to

dial out. The scenario just desribed is ideal for those who like to store

things at home but sometimes need to access that data from school or from

an office etc...

If you can reccommend any Linux compatible devices for the above purpose

I would be glad to hear from you.

Thanks for your help.

Recompile your kernel to include the Power Management option, and use
'halt -p' (man halt).
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

and

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
You have to be running a kernel with APM support. If you are running
slackware, you should have installed with the bareapm.i bootdisk.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

and

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
See http://www.diku.dk/students/grove/poweroff.html
for a more detailed discussion of the problem.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

and

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
edit this file: /etc/rc.d/init.d/halt
You see the line that reads:
   command="halt"
Change it to:
   command="halt -p"

in fact, there are a few thousand replies to the question.
