Hi,

I got the Card running straight from the box.
(Debian 2.1, Kernel 2.2.10, xawtv & others)

But I can't figure out how to have sound.

The msp3400-module is loaded.
The sound and mixer-devices work.
I have sound under Windoze (I only installed it to test the card).
But I can't get any sound.

I read about a patch for msp3415 based cards, but I can't find it.

What should I do ?!

ciao

Does this printer not say it requires windows someplace on the box?
If so, then its one of those for which no drivers are available since
the driver specs are proprietary.

If thats the case, go get a real printer. One that will print
'hello world\f' on an otherwise empty page if those 12 bytes are fed to it.

Cheers, Gene

I should add that I don't actually needt the scroll wheel to work at
all. I only need the mouse to act like a normal 3-button mouse!
I would even settle for 2 buttons right now!!

Hi everyone,

I have been trying to setup a Linux box to act as a fax server. I bought a
RocketModem II that has 4 modems in a single board. The board is a PCI
board. I am having a lot of trouble trying to use the driver with redhat
6.0. I downloaded a new driver from Theodore's site at MIT (version 1.16). I
can get the driver to load and recognize the card, but I cannot get the
loadrm2 program to load the firmware to the board. Does someone has a
similar experience? If anyone have been able to make this setup to work,
could you please let me know and share your experience?

Any help is rgeatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I don't own a Zip drive, however there is some good information on
parallel port disks, scanners, etc. at: http://www.torque.net/linux-pp.html
Maybe something out there can help you.

Interestingly, under Linux I have never created a coaster, no matter how
much I picked on my system during a burn, with either a SCSI or ATAPI
drive. Windows 95 was a different story. When I had a 4x scsi drive on
an adaptec 1510 card, I never had a coaster. When I went to a 36X ATAPI
drive, I started getting occasional coasters. I just upgraded to win98,
so I will have to wait and see if works any better then 95 did.

Note that there are also two formats that windows can write CD-Roms.
The normal ISO9660 format must be created in a continous spiral from
middle of the disc to outside of the disk, and any interruption means
death. A packet write disk, however, can be written too like any
removable media, and is not time critical. The ISO9660 format stores
more data, and can be read by any CDROM made since the beginning of
time. The packet write format requires a pretty up to date drive and
support from you OS. Rumors of linux support for packet write disks
(UDF format, I think is what it is called) persist, but I have not tried
it yet.

Don't get me wrong... tapes have some significant advantages over CDRW
drives for archiving, mainly in the area of convenience. However, if
you are a normal user with reasonable sized systems, and don't want or
can't afford to have both a tape drive and a CDRW drive, I think a CDRW
drive can be used in such a way as to be a completely sufficient backup
solution, and may have a few advantages over tape.

In a nutshell:
  Tape drives are more convenient.
  CDRW drives are more flexible.
each have some advantages over the other.

You have obviously done a little research on four own...wish I could
help you more but I can't. If you get desperate...BACK UP...and try the

One thing....you did make them as block devices right?

Try doing "insmod zftape" before using the drive.

I have a feeling it is this.

If I remember rightly

Way back when IDE drives were a new sort of thing, there was two standards
of IDE. Sort of like the two 56K standards.

Seagate and Maxtor had their own ideas as to the standard, and as suck you
had a very hard time getting a maxtor drive to be a master and a seagate
being the slave. And Vice Versa

Me thinks this might be your problem

The drive will happily coexist with the drive in your 95 box
but doesn't like working with the drive in your linux box

Try swapping another drive for the master and have this drive as the slave
(just for a test) in the same machine.

or have this drive as master and another as slave.

If it works then the above is probably your prob.

the other thing you could try is

Have the drive as a master to your CDROM on the second channel, or as a
slave on the second channel to the CDROM. It might like working with the CD
OK.

Also there are some slightly different IDE disks out there in computer land.

An example
In one of my servers ( Compaq Systempro )
it has

8 IDE drives hanging off a special RAID type controller
now these are special Matched Pairs of IDE drives

Conner CP3501's if I remember right.
They are designed to be run in pairs (probably for the raid) as the raid
controller and (software) operating system only see's 4 drives ie 8 drives
in pairs (mirrored)

these drives especially don't like to work in other machines
they work allright by themselves (ie stick two of them together master
slave)
but try to mix them with another IDE drive and nothing nada zip!!!

Hope it helps

Tony Platt
