Linux run on this system sharing the HD with W98 without a lot
of problems?

Hey, thanks Zane! I did manage to find that little trick a little while
ago. I also found that one can click on the KDE Menu panel button and
click Personal to get to the same options. Nevertheless, it would still
be nice to know if it is possible to modify the desktop pop-up menu, and
how to do it. Thanks again!

the easiest way to get a sblive to work is to download the 2.4-test kernel
(kernel-2.4.0-test8 at the moment at http://www.kernel.org)

with the sound card i don't know but why won't u use the fbdev ?

I initially had the same problem, but I successfully installed RH6.2 on an
Abit KT7 motherboard with a 1000MHz Athlon after I specified the x86_serial_nr
kernel option during the installation. This option inverts the compiled state
of the disable_x86_serial_nr boolean in the kernel. RH6.2 defaults to always
disabling the serial number. See /usr/src/linux/init/main.c and
/usr/src/linux/arch/i386/kernel/setup.c for details. The correct way
to specify the option is x86_serial_nr without any =value.

I hope this helps.

I run a small webhosting company and we just
built a couple of new webservers. We're using
the KT7-RAID with Maxtor 20GB Drives. With
Mandrake Linux 7.1 we had no problem installing
directly to the RAID-1 drives (2 maxtor 20.4GB)
we installed a third drive on the normal
controller just for backups rather than use tape.

So far - after several weeks of installations,
testing and break-in we have yet to see any
problems with either the board or the RAID
controller. As with any hardware YMMV - but I
think it's mainly a software problem (older linux
kernels not seeing the hardware correctly) rather
than a hardware problem.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Greetings. I've just installed RedHat 6.2 and am having trouble getting
my Logitech Trackman Marble to play nicely with my modem. Here's the
hardware setup to start:

  AMD K6/2 500, Epox EP-MVP3C2 mainboard, 128MB ram, USR 56k faxmodem
jumpered to COM2 (irq 3), LogiTech Trackman Marble PS/2, Xi Graphics
Accelerated-X server, /dev/mouse->/dev/psaux

And, here are the symptoms. Until I attempt to access the modem the
mouse works fine (although I've noticed that manipulating the wheel
within an xterm activates the bash history mechanism). However, modem
access is unsuccessful; I get "can't initialize modem" and (I think I've
seen) "modem busy" messages. If I disconnect my ps/2 mouse and attach a
LogiTech serial mouse, all is well.

I'm a long-time Linux user and pretty good with hardware (I built this
machine from scratch), so I think I've set things up correctly. However,
I've been wrong (many times) before.

I've spent a fair amount of time searching the various Linux sites but
have found nothing precisely indicative of my trouble. I'd sure
appreciate any help/advice. Thanks much.

FWIW, a friend of mine bought an Athlon 600+SD-11, and SuSE 6.4
installed and worked beautifully, autodetecting everything save the
Hauppage TV-tuner. Same thing with RedHat 6.2. The Athlons don't have
CPUIDs, and I'd hope that the kernel doesn't try to disable the CPUID
unless it detects a PIII. (Just to be safe, select "PII" or "Athlon"
when compiling a custom kernel for the machine....)

Well, when I got down to Fry's, turned out I'd misunderstood: The
price on the SD-11 system didn't include the CPU. So I took a flyer
and bought the Soyo SY-K7VIA motherboard with Athlon K7 800 MHz CPU.
When I got home I had a message from Soyo tech support saying that
the motherboard did not support Linux.

Now, my translation of that is, "We haven't tested it, and we
don't think there are enough Linux people to be worth our while,
so go away." But I'd like to hear any experiences with this
board before I start gluing the chip cooler to the CPU.

I also got a Kaser 305-16A AGP video card. Any idea whether
this is Linux-compatible? If it's not, does that mean it
won't work at all, or just that I won't have all the gamer-type
features available?

There is a "very low end Unix variant" called Uzi, that I believe
can run on a Z-80; the minimum for a recognizable form of Linux, on the
other hand, is an 80386, which was a BIG jump from the 80286 in its
support for addressing modes and virtualization.

I can't decide whether to believe that or not; it's just imaginable

Smallest I believe is a 486 clone that, complete with some RAM and
Ethernet NIC, fits in a matchbox. But stuff that small isn't
cheap...

The problem i had is that unde RH6.2 (Haven't tried anything else) it
installs a kernel that trys to diable the CPUID (with PIII). Under the
Thunderbird this causes an unrecoverable error (you will be able to boot
with x86_serial_nr=0 or maybe a 1 I don't remeber then rebuild the
kernel from there.

I'm not sure if it installed a different kerenel under the anthlon 700,
but it installed fine anyways (and the first thing that I did was
rebuild a newer kernel)...

I guess my answer is, there are no real problems. Everything for me
works nicely.

Question,

It appears that you got the Geforce2 to work under linux. I have only
been able to get it up to 320x400 with XFree86 4.0.1.

I use the modeline 1024 XXXX XXXX XXXX 768 XXXX XXXX XXXX. I was just
curious if you had any ideas as I could not get it to go higher... The
setup program would run at a higher res (I think 640x480 or 800x600) but
on setting the values the most it would successfully do is 320x400. I
ended up doing a manual config to get it up at all... just wondering if
you had any pointers / idea...

No real problems I run a thunderbird 850 and asus a7v under linux
(RH6.2)

the two issues I've had...

1. The stock redhat kernel tries to disable the P3 CPUID by default...
This will make your kernel basically unbootable. use the x86_serial_nr
parameter to disable this (setting it to 1 or 0 disables.) Then its a
matter of a kernel rebuild.

2. I was unfortunatly unable to get the Promise card to come up right
with the 2.4.0-test7 kernel (Test 6 or 7) but I only tried once and was
too lazy to try again.. It detects it right though... just doubt the
ata100 or even 66 without the actual driver...

I've been happy with both the processor and motherboard though. Well I
hope this helps...

Subject: 3ware irritation...

Hello, I am a Linux user who is encountering some trouble installing Linux
onto a machine with new and somewhat custom hardware. Specifically, my
areas of difficulty seems to stem from my 3ware RAID controller. Without
it's driver support at install time I cannot install Linux at all.
The setup I am attempting is of Debian GNU/Linux. I am attempting a floppy
disk install of Debian (annoying, but it allows for better compatibility).
As it stands, my installation hits a dead-end when it comes time to
partition the hard drive - as when using the 3ware controller, no hard
drive is found. It is my guess that the driver isn't being loaded into the
kernel before this step - I checked the drivers.tgz file for the
non-floppy installation method of Debian and it contained the 3ware
driver. I have read the Debian install manual online, and it makes brief
mention of an ability to "pre-load kernel modules from the floppy
drive"... this seems like the right thing to do for my situation, however
the install manual (of course) doesn't mention the method of doing this -
just that you probably won't have to (goody for me!). Alas, I did not
notice any obvious menu option for me to do this - there was a ``Configure
Device Driver Modules'' option, however my attempt to use this option was
rebuked by the Debian install, which claimed that I need to have the hard
drive initialized to be able to use this option. As you can see, I have
encountered something of a chicken and egg problem here. If anyone has any
suggestions as to how to pre-load kernel modules for this situation, or
better... if anyone has used a 3ware RAID device before and has a
suggestion, I would much appreciate it.

(PS - There are some driver disks supplied for SuSE 6.3 and 6.4, as well
as Redhat Linux 6.1 and 6.2... I would prefer not to have to use those
distros (just personal preference, no biggie) but if no one can help me I
will use them. In any case, thanks for any help anyone can give me.)
