Use modprobe to load ppa. It will take care of the dependancies

AFAIK, the *only* one available is the "very early beta test", NDA-closed,
binary-only driver from www.opensound.com; they offer evaluation (time-
limited) and pay versions.

See http://www.opensound.com/readme/README.Vortex.html, and

Hi,
I am running rh6.0 on an intel al400lx system with an okidata okipage
6e led printer.
Ican't get the printer to print. I set up the printer using printool
(as an hp ljet 4) .
The printer light just blinks and nothing is printed. I tried adjusting
all options for the ljet4 (send EOF .....supress headers etc)
(under printool) ; nothing seems to work.
I also tried directly dumping text to the port.

Any help would be greatly
appreciated

Hi folks,

I will appreciate it if any one can help me with the following.

When I run Xfree86 on my HP Vectra with Matrox Millenium 2064W (not
sure) GAdapter with 2MB memory and TI TVP3260 (not sure) clock chip with
a 17" Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 87TXM monitor, no matter what I do the
Xwindows fills only about 12" of the screen. However, when I run Win95 I
am able to take advantage of all of the monitor screen.

Any ideas? I have tried quite a few things with no luck. My last resort
I am thinking is going for a commercial XiGraphics Xserver but I dont
wanna pay the money especially for a destop with a graphics adapter as
common as Matrox.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. By the way, I tried running
xdvitune (name ?) utility with no success.

Thanx.

Got the same thing. The problem is that the 2930U2W responds differently
than it's Big brother 2940 when probed (it's not the same bios). Altough I
got Red Hat 6.0 to believe it was an 2940 and then got it mounted
(synchronous mode) after the install was completed and I booted the system
it just crashed when rh probed the card... I'm new to linux but IMHO some
Hacker needs to built a new driver for this card. Or revise the 2940 driver
so that it understands the hex ident code the 2930 returns.

Niels.

I had the equal problem.

Just a suggestion:

a. Check the file "/etc/ppp/options" for the entry "lock" and comment it
out or delete it.
b. Open KPP-settings and add an pppd-argument "-mru 808" to reduce the
packet-size.

In my case, it helped and now works fine.

Here is the entire list, sans date/time/pppd[375]:

pppd 2.3.5 started by root, uid 0
using interface ppp0
connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/cua2
Remote Message: Login Succeeded
local IP address 216.88.250.48
remote IP address 216.88.250.6
Hangup (SIGHUP)
Modem hangup
Connection terminated
Exit.

Once again, my connection times are around 3-4 minutes in length.
If it is something on providers side, whats my options/ just call and ask

No, 128 megs to be precise, in that machine. The machine is not this
one. I use this for email and news because there simply is *no* linux
program that can be compared to the Amiga running THOR. The linux
offerings are not even on the same playing field on the same day.

See above, or for this machine, below. There is sufficient memory for
either to do its job.

I have the Soundblaster Live! working on my linux machine. Creative
Labs now have someone writing drivers for linux. You can download a
driver module (sblive) from their web site. The package contains
modules for kernel versions 2.0.36-0.7 (Redhat 5.2) and 2.2.5.
You will probably need to recompile the kernel.

1. Try printing to the printer under Windows, if you have it
available, to rule out a hardware problem.

2. Could you please be more specific about the blinking? Has
the printer finished its warmup cycle? Is it in the non-blinking
light stage before you attempt to print? Is the blinking fast or
slow? Slow is about once per second, and indicates that the
printer is receiving data. Fast blinking is noticeably more than
once per second, and indicates a problem. For me, the most
common problem has been the out-of-paper condition. Other than
that, I've had one paper-jam and a couple of instances of my not
having closed the paper drawer completely.

I used the Red Hat Linux Print System Manager to configure my
printer under RH5.1 and RH6.0. Here's what I used to get it
running:

Name: lp
Spool Directory: /var/spool/lpd/lp
File Limit in Kb: 0
Printer Device: /dev/lp0
Input Filter: *auto* - LaserJet4
Supress Headers is checked.

On the Filter screen:
Printer Type: HP LaserJet 4/5/6 series
Resolution: 300x300
Paper Size: letter
Color Depth: default
Printing Options: 1 page per output page
Margins: 18 pts for each.

Subject: Success writing to IDE zip drive
Date: Mon, 28 Jun 1999 18:26:15 -0500

Thanks to those who helped me out with my problems writing to my IDE
zip. Here is what I've learned.

The maintainer of the relevant section of the kernel (Alan Cox)
apparently is aware of the problem, and has a patch against kernel
2.2.10. You can find it at ftp.linux.org.uk in the file
patch-2.2.10.ac4.gz. However, I got errors when I tried to execute the
patch. Presumably (since Mr. Cox works for redhat) the next update of
the kernel from redhat will fix the problem.

Here is what worked for me: Create a new kernel in which the ide-floppy
option is turned _off_, and turn _on_ ide-scsi and generic-scsi. (I
compiled them in directly. It may work to compile as modules.) Add the
following line to /etc/conf.modules:
  alias scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi
Boot your new kernel, and the zip drive should show up as a scsi
device. Assuming you have no scsi card in your machine, that means the
device is /dev/sda, so you should be able to see the zip disk at
/dev/sda4 (assuming you have not repartitioned the disk).

I hope this works for others.

you re-installed linux to get Xwindows running ??? Sorry to say this but
this obsession with reinstallation must be some Microsoft epidemic. Why
don't you look at a good book like "Running LInux" - I think it's on the
web at the linux documentation project - and follow their instructions.
Get some XF86Config file (I can email you mine - using a millenium myself)
and then run X probing only redirecting the output to a file to analyze.
Use one modeline at a time to figure out which one works.

Yes some controllers able expansion of the raid 5 array

Expansion of a raid 1 mirror isn't possible, unless you add another mirrored
pair of drives. Then add the mirrored pair's partition into your linux tree.

Raid 5 is good for lots of little files with lots of random access.
Raid 4 is good for large files with mainly sequential access..ie people
reading and writing video / movie files

If the database has very critical info contained within yes I would
recommend going RAID 5 and have a hot spare designated

A hot spare is a drive the controller can pull into the raid array, if any
of the drives in the array fails.

it works like this on my systems

say 14 drives in a raid box

13 of them set up as raid 5 (one logical drive )
1 drive sits and does nothing ( hot spare ) isn't even powered up.

I walk over and simulate that a drive has failed
Pull a drive out !!!! say ID5

Instantly the hot spare fires up and the raid 5 array begins to transfer
data ( from the parity on the remaining 12 drives) to the temporary ID5 hot
spare.

A light goes on saying there is a problem with drive at ID5, meanwhile the
hot spare drive has a different light on which flashes slowly indicating
that it is rebuilding.
Also you are likely to get some messages displayed on screen that something
is up.

When I replace the dead drive with a fresh new one, the controller senses
this and instantly begins writing all the data from the hot spare to the new
drive.

When it is finished the hot spare is returned to powered down and ready
again.
All my data is safe, and I didn't have to worry that all this happend whilst
I was (pretending to be ) asleep!!!

This hot spare also helps in the situation ( altho very unlikely ) of two
drive failing pretty close to each other.

As if I don't have a hot spare assigned and a drive goes belly up say at
2am. Well that OK as the raid will keep working albeit at a reduced rate
until I replace the failed drive. But what if another drive goes at 5.30am
just before I get to work???

the whole raid dies.

But if I had the hot spare assigned the drive that died at 2am was
"replaced" by the hot spare. So the raid array is still running Fully, but
at 5.30am when the second drive goes, everything is still up and running OK,
it is just in the degraded mode reduced rate.

You can usually assign more than one Hot spare. But it depends what your
data is worth to you.??? As having drives sitting doing nothing costs $$$
and isn't for everyone.

The hot spare can also cover the drives in a mirrored pair or a Raid 4 array
but not a strip (raid 0 ) naturally

Also naturally the Hot spare has to be of the same size ( or larger ) than
any of the drives it is to replace.

>Will RAID help any with the 2gb file size limit on 32bit Linux?

No that is the limitation of linux, having a (logical) drive of 500gig won't
get around that.

If you didn't solve your problem yet, take a look in a previous post in
newsgroup entitled:

"Re: Can't print; /dev/lp0 not detected; procfs?"

You may have the same problem I had with ZIP and LP at same port and the
solution is easy to apply but not
easy to find ;)

Good Printings and let me know if it helped, I really wanna know how many
people is stuck with this
very hard problem.
