Read the Hardware-HowTo, there you will find long lists of hardware
working with Linux and hardware not working.

I have the dreaded LT Winmodem. I downloaded the Linux drivers for it, but
when I try to insmod the ltmodem.o file, I get Init module: Device or
resource busy. Any idea why this is happening?
If possible, please respond by e-mail.

Date: Wed, 05 Apr 2000 16:30:10 GMT

Can anyone help me to get my floppy & cdrom working.
I get an Input/output or device is busy error when mount the cdrom.
I can mount the cdrom, but cannot see the contents.

I looked in Lothar and it indicated my cdrom was on /hdd

I went to dmesg(?) it indicated that it was sr0.

I went to fstab it indicated it /mnt/cdrom /mnt/cdrom supermount
fs=iso9660, dev=/dev/cdrom

Mtab I keep put the line in for the cdrom and saving it and then running
lilo, but disappears the mtab.

How can I mount them?

thanks,Robert

I have Microsoft Intelligent Mouse(PS/2) and Microsoft Natural
Keyboard(PS/2). There are two PS/2 port on my ASUS P3B Motherboard. However,
I found that the two hardwares would be conflicted with each other and this
could lock up my linux system.
Does anyone know if I cannot use the two hardwares with same
interface(PS/2). There is no problem when I use mouse with com port.

If it's booting windows ok, then there's nothing wrong with the MBR.
It's probably just a matter of putting LILO where Bootman can execute
it. You will need to get into linux with a boot floppy or a rescue
disk. Then install LILO into a convenient partition, such as the one's
with /boot or /home. Then tell Bootman which partition to look in to
execute LILO. Something similar would need to be done with Be, I think.

btw, I assume that you're referring to the '/' partition as '/home'.
/home is a directory that is within / unless you make it a separate
partition.

Neil.

Have you tried to use mount -t instead of mount -vt ?

Here is what I find in the man page :

-v Print the list of mounted file systems in
verbose format. Must be the only option
                    specified.

Hopefully it may answer your question, but I don't know Debian at all...

Yes, one... I think /dev/hdb designs a second hard disk if any. I've
never seen it designing a CD-ROM. The device in this case should be
/dev/hdc

I think that any distro that is running XFree86 3.3.4 or above should
work fine. I'm running SuSE6.3 on fully integrated computer (doesn't
have any legacy devices... even the keyboard and mouse are USB only!)
based on the SiS 530 chipset and it's working fine! SuSE6.4 should be
better though since it's running XFree86 4.0.

Just my 2 cents...

I've had some of the same problems with my card and to both of you, i can
suggest one possible Solution. Before i do, tho, I don't have the SAME card
as you, I have a SB PCI 128, but it still uses the 1371 driver, and since
you mentioned the newer es1371 chip, it sounded Familiar. my advice is this:

Try the 2.3.99-pre3 kernel. I toiled and toiled over my card in 2.2, errors
after errors, nothing worked right. Sound thought it was playing, but i
got no output. When played an mp3, i had no output, and mpg123 -v reported
a freeze at frame 24 (less than 1 second into playing the song). ALSA also
gave me many errors.

When i upgraded to the 2.3.99-pre3 kernel, it worked. Not a single problem
with it. So, Try that kernel.

If it's Red Hat 6.1, then I had the same problem. It's a known bug. To sort it,
add the line:

alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc

To the file /etc/conf.modules

This should allow printtool to recognise your printer.

Subject: Exabyte problems -- please help

Hi all,

A couple of weeks ago I asked a question about reading a sun tar exabyte
tape on my linux box. Thanks to all who helped -- problem solved. I
set the block size to 0 using the mt command "mt -f /dev/nst0 setblk
0". Now I can read my old tapes.

Other problems: (It never seems to end......)
I can not get linux to set my tape drive as an EXB-8505. I have tried
setting the density using "mt -f /dev/nst0 setdens 0x8c", but then an mt
status command tells me that the density is set to default 0x0. I have
also tried "mt -f /dev/nst0 setdens 140" -- no luck. When I boot, linux
sniffs the scsi chain and finds the tape drive and reports it as an
8505. Without doing anything mt status reports a density of 0x90 and I
can write about 5gigs to a 112m tape (8200 specs). Any ideas?

The "clean me" leds are always flashing. I have cleaned the drive with
a Sony cleaning cartridge -- many times. No luck. Searching on the
Exabyte site they suggest upgrading the firmware using Expert. Ok,
back in DOS land I ensure ASPI is loaded and I run Expert. Expert sees
the drive, allows me to start the upload of the firmware file
(8sc-0808.bin converted to TAP format -- downloaded from the exabyte
site) but never finishes. I left it overnight and it still was not
complete. I had to reboot. Any ideas?

Do I ask to much?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re-tried disabling DMA, same problem. :(

Tempted to do a dreaded repartition and install combo...

I have Redhat 5.2 and the same printer; it worked first time without
installing any additional software; use printtool and select the Epson
Stylus driver.

Check that /etc/printcap contains the device /dev/lp0 or /dev/lp1; if
it is wrong, it will just sit there. If /dev/lp0 doesn't work, try 1
(for some reason my printer has previously worked under /dev/lp1 and
then switched to /dev/lp0 when I recompiled the kernel or something)

You can always do everything manually; install GNU Ghostscript from
source if you don't have it on your system (/usr/bin/ghostscript) and
use the following script:

#!/bin/bash

 /usr/local/bin/gs -q -sDEVICE=stcolor -r360x360 -sPAPERSIZE=a4
 -dNOPAUSE \
 -dSAFER -sOutputFile=- -

This appears to work for me. Note the /usr/local/bin/gs may have to be
/usr/bin/gs if you just use a Redhat RPM.

>options ide-cd ignore=hdd
># alias /dev/printers lp
># alias /dev/lp* lp
>alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc

Have you tried catting a text file straight into /dev/lp0 or /dev/lp1?
It should come out on the printer (just press the paper feed button to
eject the page when done). If this doesn't work, it may be something
to do with your kernel configuration; check it to make sure that
nothing obvious is missing (as in make menuconfig or something). See
the Kernel-HOWTO for details (linuxdoc.org or
/usr/doc/HOWTO/somewhere). If you're just using the Redhat kernel then
this shouldn't be an issue.
