Hello,
just using a Intel Premiere PCI-2 that can be jumpered to 75 or 90Mhz. Is it a
good idea to buy an Adaptersocket and place a AMD K2-300 on it? This is a cheap
deal this time.
Are there any problems known with 2.0.36?

The device naming follows the SCSI Id numbers . Give the new disk

Subject: hard disk partitioning problems
Date: Tue, 09 Mar 1999 23:38:09 -0800
Hi,
I recently installed a new 6.4GB harddrive (Quantum Fireball) on my
system (Abit BH6 board with Celeron 300A, running RedHat Linux 5.2 and
Win95). I'm using it as secondary master. I created several partitions
to use under Linux, as well as one large DOS partition, to use under
Windows 95. I encountered the following problems:
* Disk Druid would not accept the first partition I defined, and reply
with 'unknown error'. If I ignore this and define additional
partitions, they are accepted. Since this seemed very suspicious to me,
I chose to use fdisk to partition my disk:
* When using fdisk's 'verify partition table' option, it complained that
my Linux partitions would overlap, although they certainly do not by
sector number. Does this simply mean that the second partitions starts
in the middle of a cylinder, so that two partitions share the same
cylinder? Is it OK to ignore these warnings, or might there be serious
trouble here?
Well, I chose to ignore the warning messages, and both the Linux system
and the DOS partition work fine by themselves. However, I configured
the partitions in such a way that there was NO overlap reported between
my last Linux partition and the DOS partition. Nevertheless:
* After working under Linux for a while, my DOS partition became
unusable, and could be read neither by Windows95 nor under DOS. I had
to reformat the partition. This, however, messed up the Linux system
and made my last Linux partition unusable.
It seems that there IS some overlap between the last Linux partition and
the DOS partition, or, that Windows and Linux don't agree on the
location of the partitions. I tried to read the HowTo's on this topic,
but didn't feel smarter afterwards. Can anyone give me detailed
instructions on how to resolve this problem????
Thanks!!!!
Klaus

Hello,
I have successfully upgraded to 2.2.3, installed xcdroast and needed rpms
on my linux-mandrake (redhat 5.2). I have xcdroast working and can make
cd's. however i cannot mount a cd anymore.
I enabled generic scsi and disbled atapi cdrom (the HP 7200i is an IDE
cd-rw unit)in the kernel. The cdrw is on hdc. The cd-rw works fine when i
enable atapi cdrom (compiled in and as a module) but then xcdroast won't
see the drive.
I want to be able to mount cd's and make them as well. I tried append lilo
at boot with "hdc=scsi-ide" and the dmesg shows the cd-rw detected. but it
is still one or the other.
Any pointers out there on how to get this to work? I would appreciate it.
I f possible please reply to my email address as well as the list.

Rob,
Would it work if the user had two PC's networked to gether.
1 running Linux and the other running Windows or NT (windows for the ISP
connection).
One could dial using the windows PC then connect to linux via an internal
network
or via a xwindows emulator on the windows PC.
Also, as anyone in the wine project managed to sort this problem out with PCI
modems ?
Many thanks

Because it is being cross posted to a United Kingdom newsgroup that's
why. Check the headers and pay attention. As far as I am concerned the
only acceptable prices in a UK newsgroup are those in GBP, prices in
Euro's are probably acceptable at a pinch.

Bizarre. Never seen anything like that. (My FA310TX cards have the DEC
chip, though.)
If you telnet directly to an IP address rather than a name, do you get
the same results as when you run nslookup then telnet?
Can you ping successfully? Are you behind some kind of firewall or
NAT? Are the results different when telneting to a machine in you
/etc/hosts file as opposed to one found via DNS?
The fact that switching network cards fixes the problem really points
at a Tulip problem, but lots of people are using the newer FA310TX
successfully.
Have you tried updating your kernel to 2.2.x, to benefit from random
fixes?

Translation/summary:
SB 16 PnP card works fine under NT server, not under Linux. When user
tries to get Linus to say "Li-nux", he gets the error message (shown in
the text).
He tried to edit /etc/isapnp.conf, but as soon as he runs sndconfig,
this gets overwritten.
End translation
My 2c worth:
We have had no end of trouble with Creative PnP cards under NT. In the
end we just tried to run them in non-PnP mode as far as possible - using
the regular SB16 driver which ships with NT, and letting them have all
the default IRQs, etc. I'd be inclined to ask my local PC dealer for a
second-hand SB16 non-PnP - shouldn't cost more than about 25 Euros, and
you can get the jumper settings (there are about 10 different cards
called SB16) at www.creaf.com if you don't get a manual (by some amazing
chance :-) )

This requirement to mount and unmount floppies and CDs is, of course,
one of the main things which puts people who are used to M$ systems off
Linux etc. There are good reasons for doing it, and there are some
nasty bugs in Windows 3.1 (at least) where floppies can get trashed if
you swap them while certain apps have files open on them, but, it
_LOOKS_ easier to not have to specify what you're slapping in and out of
the machine.
