Nope... a floppy port connection is faster than a parallel port. Trust

Definitely do not get the Voodoo3 as it can not handle 32 bit color well in
2D or 3D from what I understand (see Voodoo3 review on
www.sharkyextreme.com). I question, though, what kind of performance
improvement (if at all) you'll see with a new video card running at such a
high resolution on only a Pentium 100. Any modern video card you by is
going to be severely underpowered. Why not spend a little extra and buy a
cheap K6-2 or Celeron plus Motherboard for a $100 bucks (or less if you shop
around) and get an AGP card instead (they're even cheaper than the PCI
version in some cases). You might also consider a Matrox G200 as it should
have even more superior 2D quality to that of the TNT, though I'm not sure
what kind of Linux driver support is available so you'll have to check on
that. Good luck.

This is from a previous post on this same newsgroup:

I also found (when I was using redhat 5.x) that upgrading to the most
recent 2.0.x kernel (2.0.36 at the time) had it detect all the memory.
You might want to try upgrading to 2.0.37 (the most recent 2.0.x kernel)
and see if that helps.

And the followup:

That should work. Maybe even take a further step and try the latest
2.2.10 kernel. I believe it recognized the 128M I have all on its own.
Regardless, you could also add the following line to the kernel boot
sequence in your lilo.conf file

append="mem=<whateveramountofmemory>M"

next run /sbin/lilo

Just a correction to make to your post: The K6 DOES support SMP
operation, but do to licensing restrictions from Intel it does not support
MPS 1.1 or 1.4 and the Intel chipsets do not support the protocol that AMD
and Cyrix use. The same is true for the line of Cyrix processors. This
means that while it is possible to find dual and quad pentium boards, the
K6 can not operate correctly in an SMP mode on them.

The new K7 will run on a different platform with a non-intel chipset
(either a VIA or a DEC...well formerly DEC). This chipset will support the
SMP modes of the new AMD processor. As well as the DEC Alphas (see
Digital's information on their new chipsets)

AFAIK, the K5 was SMP-capable, but noone ever produced a chipset to
support it. With the K6 they didn't bother. The K7 is supposed to be
SMP-capable, but we'll have to wait and see if anyone produces a
shipset and mb to support it.

If the K7 lives up to it's billing, performance-wise, this would seem
to be *the* ideal time for AMD to attack the high end, and that means
offering multi-processor systems.

(Sorry if this has been asked frequently; I just found this group)

Hello, all:
I have a Wietek P9100 chip (PCI, 2MB) video card and was wondering if
linux wouldsupport it in accelerated capacity. I know that the P9000
has support from the Debian distribution, and maybe RedHat, but am not
sure about the P9100. I also realize that the "AcelerateX" commercial
software will support it in the Linux environment, but I am cheap (the
card was essentially free, anyway).

Any ideas? Thanks...

Hi,

Im thinking of adding a soundcard to my system and wondered what people
thought was the best choice. Im running Linux (2.2.5) and 98 (just for
games). I want some decent sound but Im not sure if I need to feel
immersed in some 3D experience (I just dont believe that a set of 50
speakers can do that). Basically I will be playing games in 98,
listening to CDs and maybe some web audio under both and I may record
some of my vinyl onto cd in the furture. From my local dealer the
choices seem to be:

soundblaster 64 PCI - 17
soundblaster AWE64 ISA - 27
soundblaster 128 PCI - 30
soundblaster live value - 43

all oem.

So what do people think is a good choice? I dont want too much hassle
in setup and want the card to work as well as can be expected in both
linux & 98. Im only going to spend about nother 30 on speakers too.

Any advice gratefully recieved.

Subject: Re: tape backup drive SEAGATE CONNER CTT8000-S

=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====

The way to access a scsi tape drive (assumming that you have included
support for it in your kernel either as a module or as a monolithic part
of the kernel proper) is to send commands to /dev/st0 and the like (the
first tape drive is 0 the second 1 and so forth)

For an IDE tape drive the device label will be /dev/ht0 and the like.

To test you device try issuing a command like:

"mt -f /dev/st0 rewind" or "mt -f /dev/st0 retension"

These should access the device and either rewind or retension the tape in
the drive.

For compatibility you may want the make the appropriate links to /dev/rmt0
and /dev/mt0 standing for "magnetic tape" and "rewindable magnetic tape"
essentially sending information to /dev/rmt0 will always cause the data to
be written and then the tape to be rewound. Sending to /dev/mt0 will not
rewind the tape (used for incrimental writes) These devices are not
standard on most Linux systems but are used substantially on
SparcStations, AIX boxes and other UN*X machines. (So if you are trying
to port code from one of these platforms and it can't find /dev/rmt0 you
will know why)

One might also ask how Portuguese usage in Brazil differs from the
same usage in Europe. I understand that American Spanish is quite
different from any of the European Spanish dialects, at least as spoken.

My own experience after having studied French in high school (USA) was
that I had no trouble communicating in France, but might just as well have
being speaking Martian when trying to communicate with French Canadians
or individuals from any of the former French colonies.

If this works the device is okay and it is only a matter of installing

Hello everyone,

could someone tell me what is wrong when a printer tested prints
perfectly a color postscript (from controlpanel/printool) and
then it doesn't for regular use? Also, sometimes the job appears in the

Also, does anyone know if Xemacs is available in RH6.0? I can't make it

(untar as root from / " cd /; tar xvzf path/cmpci_sound.tgz)

The Compaq Smart Array controller works with redhat

when installing and it comes to the controller selection

select other

choose the compaq controller

and pass the option

smart2=0x1000

where
0x1000 = the EISA slot number the board is in

ie

0x2000 = slot 2
0x5000 = slot 5
etc

but you will have to configure you (logical) drives in the compaq bios first

Hope it helps

I am considering switching to ADSL, when my ISP will provide it. But I
have one problem. Linux does not support the driver I will have to use
to get connected.

The name of the Card: SpeedStream 3010. Efficient who makes the card
(www.efficient.com) are willing to give out information to the Linux
community, if we want to make a driver.

I know there is a development project going on for FreeBSD at:
http://www.whitebarn.com/~bob/atm/

Here is what Efficient says about Linux/BSD

---[ Begin ]----
Efficient Networks supports Windows 95/98 and NT OS for
our SpeedStream 3010 (25.6) card. We are aware of BSD
development http://www.whitebarn.com/~bob/atm/ but
nothing for Linux. Efficient Networks does not develope
Linux, BSD, etc, drivers instead we've enabled those user
communities to create that software.
---[ End ]---

Does anyone know if any development is going on?

Check to see if you have the Mach64 server installed. Try the following
command:

rpm -q -a|grep XFree86-Mach64

If not, go back to you install media and install it with:

rpm -i XFree86-Mach64*

Then make sure that /usr/bin/X11/X points to the Mach64 Xserver.

Subject: FWD- Hardware site petitions Intel over SMP Celerons
Date: Wed, 30 Jun 1999 09:18:43 -0700

Hardware site petitions Intel over SMP Celerons

A leading hardware site has asked Intel nicely not to implement a
plan to prevent the production of dual Celeron systems.

(See Intel could nip dual Celeron move in bud)

CPU Review has posted a petition to its site which can be viewed
here.

http://www.cpureview.com/smp_petition.html

At Computex in Taiwan at the beginning of the month, a motherboard
manufacturer
showed a design which allowed twin Celerons to run together.

The idea was originally invented by a Japanese engineer, and
according to reports,
Intel was unhappy with the idea, and therefore wanted to nobble such
designs by
disabling the feature that allowed for dual Celerons.

When we spoke to Intel earlier this week, a representative pointed
out that
implementing dual Celerons was not part of the original system spec
for the cut down
Pentium II processor.

CPU Review's petition reads: "We, the undersigned consumers hereby
respectfully
request that Intel does not disable the SMP capabilities of the
Celeron processors.
We believe that business users will use Pentium II, III and Xeon
processors for
production servers due to their large L2 cache sizes. Disabling SMP on
Celerons will
only hurt technical enthusiasts."

We don't know if Intel responds to petitions and it's an interesting
idea.

Let's fix your problem with memory first. Linux kernel recognizes only
up to 64MB of RAM on boot. You have to tell it that you have more. To do
this, modify your /etc/lilo.conf, inserting the line:
append="mem=128M"
after you linux "image" specifier. *NOTE*: you may not have all of the
memory available to linux, in that case the system will lock-up. I have
128MB on my ThinkPad, but some of the memory is used by BIOS(?), so I
had to put "mem=127M" on mine.
Then you just have to run lilo to update the boot sector.

Now, to fstab: do you know what your partitions are? If not, run fdisk
(don't write anything, just look) and write down which partitions are
swap and which are ext2
It's also a good idea to put "proc" filesystem back.
Here is my fstab (RH 6.0):
/dev/hda3 / ext2
defaults 1 1
/dev/hda5 /boot ext2
defaults 1 2
/dev/hda1 /home ext2
defaults 1 2
/dev/hda4 swap swap
defaults 0 0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy vfat
sync,user,noauto,nosuid,nodev,unhide 0 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom auto
user,noauto,nosuid,exec,nodev,ro 0 0
/dev/zip /mnt/zip vfat
user,noauto,nosuid,nodev,unhide 0 0
none /proc proc
defaults 0 0
none /dev/pts devpts
gid=5,mode=620                          0       0
