I'm assuming you are using the Zip Zoom ISA card that came with the drive?
If so, you have to use the aha152x low level driver. This driver IS
supported, you must not be looking in the right spot (ie 'low-level scsi
drivers'). After you get the driver compiled into the kernel, append this
line to lilo like this:

append "aha152x=0x340,11,7,1"

assuming the above addrs. pertain to your card's setup. Then it should
work unless you have the IRQ allocated to PCI devices. You can change that
in your BIOS.

Fractals and your CPLEX package probably do lots of floating point

I began to install RedHat Linux 6.0, but got only so far as to insert the cd
into the cdrom drive. Wouldnt you know it, my drive is not on the list of
supported devices. It is a Creative Labs CD820E.

I tried entering "linux hdc=cdrom" at the boot prompt, but this did not
work. And it shouldnt have worked, as i have a proprietary card with the
cdrom drive. It doesnt hook up directly to an IDE connecter in my computer.
At least i think it doesnt. The problem is i just dont know.

It was passed down to me, so i cant get anything out of Creative Labs about
it. I searched their site for hours, and found out nothing..

I would appreciate some advice from someone WHO HAS KNOWLEDGE of THIS
PARTICULAR DEVICE, ONLY. I dont want this posting to disappear like the
others i have posted....

Thanks,

I don't know tho as I don't use 2.2 kernels.....

FUD - OS/2 has been nearly completely re-written (stripped of 99% of the
Microsoft code), and is now such a severe threat to the Microsoft empire
that they took steps to ensure it's failure.

Read up on the MS/DOJ trial - makes for an interesting read. Anything
Microsoft hates THAT MUCH can't be all that bad. {smile}

Now there's an interesting question.
What does BeOS do if you remove the HDD while it's running?

I know Win95 freezes solid, but has anyone tried this in BeOS or Linux?

You might check Creative Lab's web site in their download section under
Beta. They have a Linux server available for download. You could also look
at their Linux newsgroup at "creative.products.3d_blaster.banshee.linux" and
check out what the folks down there have to say. I will be getting Mandrake
soon, but I'm using Slackware now. The drivers that CL had didn't work for
me, but I'm not sure about Mandrake. I did manage to pick up a Slackware
server from somewhere. You can find it on the newsgroup. You can also pick
up the source for the server and compile it for your system.

The server from CL is "XF86_Banshee", and it goes in your /usr/X11R6/bin
folder (I think that's what it is, again I don't know Mandrake.) If all
works, just make a symlink to XF86_Banshee and call it X. They do have an
installation script that will do all that, but again it didn't work for me.

The server from the other site is an updated XF86_SVGA server that will work
with just about every flavor of Voodoo.

Hope this helps.

To repeat what Tim more (sort of) said, the Soundblaster PCI 64
(that's what was being referred to, works easily in Linux, apart from
MIDI synthesis which I haven't worked out yet (though I haven't tried
very hard). For a budget card it performs very well.

I'm running RedHat 6.0 on my Inspiron 7000 (ATI Rage video 8mb; 15" LCD;

It is most likely an NE2000 compatible. I don't know what the

This is very true, I had forgotten the lazerjets must buffer the full
page. My experience with the best printer I've ever owned, an Epson
Stylus Pro, indicates it must have about a meg of buffer since gs will
exit on screen while the printer carries one for approximately the last
page, usually a hair more than one page. Thats when I run it direct,
which I don't often do, preferring to run it out to page numbered files,
and use a duplex printing script I wrote to actually drive the printer.

This printer, unlike the lazerjet properly handles the busy line in mid
page when the full color files being fed to it exceed the buffer,
because it can stop the data and print a band on the page.

The only choice on the lazorjet is to add memory, use less resolution
and color depth, or a combination that does allow the full page to fit.
I have one 720x 32 bit file of a map thats nearly 10 megs for the top
half of the page! So at its top resolution, its possible it might need
20 megs of ram!

This is just my personal opinion. First, if this HD has the root on it, then
it need to be put in at the same drive position. E.g. if it is /dev/hda in
the old box, it needs to be /dev/hda in the new box.

If you have customized for some devices. Say, for a particular SCSI controller
then you need to have the same controller in the new box. Alto, if you can
boot without the devices, then you could boot the old kernel and recustomize.

If you are running X, then you'll need to recustomize X since you most
likely will be changing video cards, and maybe monitors. Also, if you had
a serial mouse and are changing to a PS/2 style mouse, you'd need to
recustomize that.

I guess what I'm saying is that I think it would work, but you might need
to make changes due to other hardware changes. But just upgrading you
motherboard and RAM shouldn't cause you any real problems.

Remember the mantra: "Backup, Backup, Backup!"

Are these powered speakers or passive ones? If you are driving them
through a soundcard output make sure that the level is not too high
for them.

You could also consider repositioning the soundcard in the computer
away from video card etc. First try to ensure that the wires are as
far away as possible from mains cables, video signal cables etc.

I also have SB PCI 64 in Redhat 6.0, it autodetects fine with
sndconfig.

I haven't got midi synthesis (yet) but I haven't really tried much.
In windows I have found that it has damn good sounds considering the
price (8MB waveset support) , and good wave output.

I don't know much about the other cards, but I have never found this
one insufficient for my needs. (I run a Casio Clavinova for some
serious piano noises :-)

I can't compare the price since mine was OEM from my manufacturer, but
it sounds very good value to me.

Have fun.

gotten a driver to work with this kernel version?????
