I've been running Linux on my HP Pavilion 8565C for several months. I
had no problem installing RH 6.0, but be advised that the Riptide
modem/sound combo is not supported. I replaced it with a cheap AudioPCI
sound board and my old USR 56K modem. The included NIC is supported -
uses the Realtek driver. Video (Nvidia TNT) works great. UDMA works
great if you turn it on with hdparm. You may or may not have to disable
"legacy usb support" in the BIOS to clean up some keyboard weirdness.
I just installed Debian on this machine last week, also with no
problems. Well, no problems that weren't due to bringing my old RH
mindset into the wild and wacky world of Debian :-)

I know others who have been through EXACTLY the same experience with the
Linksys card,
i.e. they believed the "Linux Compatibility" claim and purcased the card;
however Linux
(RedHat 6.x) refused to recognise the card,a nd compile of the tulip driver
failed.
This is not a hardware conflict. The person I know spent sleepless nights
before giving up.
I strongly recommend returning the card and going for one of the following
which (I know)
work :-
- Intel EtherExpress Pro/100
- SMS 1211/TX
- Most 3c9xx cards
- and many many others which are supported by Linux, I just mentioned the
ones I know
Regds, Krish.

I installed RH7 this morning on an Intel D815EEA (with a Matrox G400, so
no difficulties there). I have problems getting the integrated Pro/100 VE
controller
to work. RH loads the eepro100 module but this quits with the message
'Device
or resource busy'. The e100 module available from Intel used to work on 6.2
but doesn't compile any more on 7.0 . Any suggestions? (I'm not a C guru)

Walter,
I'll try a hand at this. Do a dmesg | more at the command prompt and
look for the messages pertaining to the scsi module loading. It will tell
you what sd device the drive is on. I am wondering at first thought if it
is maybe sdb or c or something else. dmesg will tell you if it found it and
where.

J,
I'm running the same burner off an Advansys Ultra wide SCSI. I have an
active termintator
on the burner. Do you have the SCSI generic module loaded? (sg). This is
required.
What does cdrecord --scanbus reveal?

I think you can use either the Glint driver from XFree 3.x or 4.x or you can
purchase the commercial LGD X-Server from Xi Graphics (www.xig.com), however the
Oxygen driver costs about $100...

If you use the disk entirely for Linux it's best to follow
the BIOS Recommendation (speaking of my AWARD BIOS here)
"Some OSes (like SCO-UNIX) must use NORMAL for installation"
so if that is an option to you, go to Autodetect Harddisk
in the BIOS, and choose "NORMAL" instead of the braindead
"LBA" mode, but note, this is done best before there is any valueable
data on this disk. ;-)

I have a Tekram P6B40-D which is humming along nicely with dual P3 800 chips
and a gig of RAM. It has a useful facility to nudge the FSB up to 103MHz for a
teeny bit more speed without having to become obsessed about cooling [1]. 8x is
as far as this board's going to go so I can start planning my next project :)
I think they might have stopped making it, but you may be able to find one
second-hand.

Killer, hmmmm. Well then you might look at the SuperMicro 370DLE
(or DL3 if you want SCSI):
http://www.supermicro.com/PRODUCT/MotherBoards/RCC_LE/370DLE.htm
NOT cheap, but has nice Server Works chip set and two 64/66 PCI slots
4 32/33, 1 ISA suports 100/133 FSB, 4 DIMM slots and more.
Also there's a nice Asus board, also a SW chipset with 2 64/66:
http://www.asus.com.tw/products/motherboard/pentiumpro/cur-dls/index.html
If you've really got $$, you could try these:
http://www.SuperMicro.com/PRODUCT/MotherBoards/RCC_HE_SL/SUPER%20370DE6%20SPECIFICATIONS.htm
or this ($$$)
http://www.tyan.com/products/html/thunder2500_p.html
Has 6 64/66 PCI, 1 ISA, 8 DIMM .....
Note that I haven't been able to find this board anywhere, though I know It's
being built.
Also note that ALL these boards have ServerWorks chip sets, not that the Intel
8xx junk or the VIA toy stuff. VIA actually does make a very nice chip set, but
it's aimed at the lower end which is where the volume is. SW is aimed at the
server
end of the scale.

Ok, did the text-mode install (by typing "text" at the boot prompt)
The install went fine, but when booting-up, there is no LILO prompt? Any

I just finished installing Mandrake 7.1 (two CDs downloaded from
mandrake), on my HP Pavilion 6460. It auto-configured the video &
sound drivers, no problem, but does not seem to know that the Rockwell
HCF 56K modem exists. That's the only snag I have hit, & this is such
a common piece of hardware that I am sure I will find a way to
configure it RSN. That's why I downloaded this group's headers....
The partition management utility in Mandrake 7.1 worked fine, I
resized the Fat32 and let the installer determine what to do about the
Linux partitions. The Mandrake installer is amazing.
Word of warning: Last year, Boot Magic ate the MBR on the Pavilion's
hard drive. I don't know if that was a random glitch, or related to
some proprietary code in the HP distribution of Win98, but I took no
chances this time: I used the "Custom" install option just to make
certain the boot loader did not get installed. The boot disk works
fine.

I have built & installed the latest release of ftape - 4.04a but I am

It is logging the following error:

[113] 0 fdc-isr.c (determine_progress) - Error "overrun"

does not help.
I have tried the ftape mailing list ( [EMAIL PROTECTED] ,

but this address appears to be "dead" ( Is this so? ).
Anyway, is ftape the only way for linux to access FDC (floppy disk

I can use ftape to rewind and retension the tape but any
attempt to get status ( ftmt -f /dev/qft0 status ) or usinmg tar
to write to the tape ends up in the 'infinite' loop logged
at the end of this message.
