are you using ghoistscript to drive your printer, try typing gs -h, the
response will tell you whether or not you have it installed, if not
you'll need to install, I'm not sure how unde red hat, I use SuSE. If
you have ghostscript installed then as root type in lprsetup, and follow
the menus. The driver you require is the stc500ph.upp. My 740c works
fine. A copy of my /etc/printcap file is attached. When you have
finished yours should look like that. Good Luck!

Subject: video card bottleneck
Date: Mon, 10 Apr 2000 20:40:51 GMT
I've got a k6-2/400 outputting to a 1meg cirrus logic 5440. I've started
watching a lot of video cd's but I can't get full screen because the
picture gets too jerky. Is this because of the graphics card? I assume
it is but if I got a new graphics card, should the processor be able to
deal with full screen (I'm wanting 1024X768 at either 16bit or 24bit
colour)?
Also, can anyone recommend any good graphics cards? I was thinking about
getting a 8meg ati xpert based card (my budget isn't very big) but after
my friends 4meg nVida Riva 128 performance impressed me, I was wondering
what other options there are for me? BTW, some form of tv-out would be a
bonus, but isn't necessary. Any comments, anybody?

and had 6 pages

I don't think so. They seem to have separate PAL

Well, almost working. Actually, I am using the PCI add-on card to test out the
PCtel driver. It dialed and connected, but pppd failed to set MTU on the
device ioctl(IOCTLSIFMTU). I have not tried 2.2.14 with ppp. We have ppp on
2.0.38. I am going to try with a real modem first, before I can determine if
the driver is working.

Hello all. I'm running RedHat 6.1, Kernel 2.3.36. I have a SBLive
Value card, and before I upgraded from 2.2.14, I had sound working just
fine. I need to reinstall the drivers now though. I downloaded
emu10k1-20000410.tar.gz from opensource.creative.com and untarred it.
But when I run make in the appropriate directory, the compilation starts
ok, but then I get this error message:
"In file included from hwaccess.h:118,
from audio.c:33:
timer.h:33: field `tasklet' has incomplete type
make: *** [audio.o] Error 1"
I don't recall any error like this from the last time I set up my sound
card. It seems like a problem in the code, which is strange...Does
anyone have any idea how to fix this or what causes it? Thanks.

are you perhaps thinking the command set called ATAPI?
check out redhat's hardware compatibility list.
<URL:http://www.redhat.com/support/hardware/intel/62/rh6.2-hcl-i.ld-6.html>
pay close attention to where it says (and i quote)
6.3 Tier 1 [most compatible] Supported CD-ROMs
The following types of CD-ROMs are supported:
* all 100% ATAPI compliant IDE CD-ROMs.
* all SCSI CD-ROMs on a supported SCSI adapter
now, there are other cd-roms out there, but i think you have to go out
of your way to find them.
6.9 CDRW Drives
Compatible But Not Supported.
Most CD Writers are compatible with Linux. The exceptions seem to
be some of the more inexpensively produced IDE drives that are not
fully ATAPI compliant. Usually, if a CDW can be used to read a cd
as a normal cdrom, it can be used to write. Almost all SCSI
writers are fine. However, configuring a CD Writer to work under
linux is beyond the scope of Red Hat Installation support. See the
CD Writing HOWTO for more information.
notice that the caveat refers to not fully ATAPI compliance.

hello!
I'm going to buy a notebook. Is it good idea to buy POWERBOOK to use
it with linux. I've never seen it working with linux before.
Maybe it's better to buy something like THINKPAD or TOSHIBA?
Please give me an advice
Thanks - Krzys

You need to go to intel web site and download two files as well as install manual.
http://support.intel.com/support/graphics/intel810/linuxsoftware.htm
Read these install procedure line by line. It is like solving a puzzle. At the
end of game, you will enjoy it.

Try a good ol' USR 56K Data Fax (ISA), I works with both Windows and
Linux. It hasn't failed me yet (everything dies one time or another).
All external modems are most likely to be compatible with all OS's.

Subject: harddisk tragedy
Date: Mon, 10 Apr 2000 22:22:49 GMT
My 4 year old Seagate 1.2GB harddrive is finally completely dead. I've been
using it in a linux server, mainly for file and internet sharing. My
questions are: should I expect the same from any other ordinary drive, was
it just too old, did I just get a bad one, or did I maybe do something wrong
with it?
First I had random system crashes. When I rebooted, I had to fsck - it found
a bunch of errors, bad i-nodes, and who knows what - fixed them (0.7%
non-contiguous) then the system ran again without problems. I had it running
24 / 7 for quite a while until the whole crash procedure started repeating
itself more frequently. The last few weeks a few programs started giving
errors, and some didn't start at all. Finally I was unable to boot. Now I
can boot up with a Win98 boot disk, run fdisk and it doesn't even see the
hard drive. All I get is a "no fixed disks" message. So I guess it's
actually dead now.
So here's my question again - it that normal for a "older" hd? Does linux
actually suck that much out of a harddrive when running 24/7? I find it hard
to believe when I think of all the computers at university with normal
drives that are running all the time and with a lot more reading and writing
going on.
I'm planing to buy a new drive soon - would a SCSI be worth it (i don't
actually need to read/write that much from it - I've got a second drive for
that - and it's doing fine)?
Please tell me a little about you experiences with older drives.
Thanks

Subject: SCSI transport error: timeout waiting to write packet
Date: Mon, 10 Apr 2000 22:31:48 GMT
Slackware 7, Linux 2.2.14; HP 7200i CD-RW drive;
Abit bx6 motherboard [and built-in IDE controller]
I'm attempting to use this drive to rip audio
tracks using cdparanoia III v9.6. The drive in
question is /dev/scd0, even though it's an IDE
drive, using ide-scsi.o emulation; that's
required for me to burn CDs with it. Also,
cdparanoia documentation suggests it, due to
having better control over the drive.
Another drive, on the same IDE cable, but not
using ide-scsi emulation, works fine. However,
the drive in question gives the error
SCSI transport error: timeout waiting to write packet
repeatedly, when extracting DA tracks. On
slightly scratched CDs, it will do this
before any large part of the track is ripped;
on a brand new CD, it did it at 99% of the first
track.
I'd like to be able to rip two CDs at the same
time; more importantly, the HP 7200i can read
damaged CDs better than my other drive, at least,
from past experience in windows, it could.
Any suggestions are appreciated. Does anyone have
any experience with anything like this?
TIA,

Well another method, use a network sniffer and grab the packets going
to the machine running the real audio app.
netstat will show the connected ports to watch.

But to be safe I hang my modem, printers, plotter, and dumb terminals
off of my digiboard, as it has 32K of buffer space to que data.
can you say ttyS2-S10.
