There is a catch, though, which most people are not aware of. With or
without LBA mapping, you absolutely must have the kernel on a partition
which resides entirely below the 1024 cylinder barrier. When installing
RedHat, the easiest method to circumvent this limitation is to simply
create a 10MB boot partition (mounted as /boot) which is the first
partition on the disk. This partition is where RedHat puts the kernel and
initrd images.
I have Linux installed on my 10GB Maxtor with no problems (and full access
to the entire disk).

Some more interesting tidbits about the bp6(bx dual s370 ata-66): it has
2 ata-66 controllers & 2 ata-33 controllers. I'd buy 4 hd's(say 8.4GB maxtors
for $100 ea. or 9.1gb quantum ka's for $150) & use linux & nt's software raid
0(stripping). Talk about hd performance!:) Abit had oc'ing in mind with
the bp6, each cpu has it's own voltage in case one oc's better than the
other & the mem bus setting are incremental by 1mhz! Also the vx1's drivers
are already optimized for sse so for even more performance(though more $ too)
bx dual + p3-450's for some heavy duty geometry calcing:)

That is an insignifficant defrag amount. Linux doesnt need a defrag tool.
It does well by itself.

What is the URL from which you downloaded the XF86_Banshee_1.01.tar.gz

been able to locate it myself! I have Mandrake 6.0 and am planning on

My Tyan Tomcat motherboard is a single processor model, but

the install process with no problems, but when I reboot it
hangs. It says it found 2 processors, but that is not
possible, and there are alot of messages about IO APIC. Is
there anything I can do, or do I need a new motherboard???

motherboard manufacturer. I beleive that is the ONLY place to get them

It seems to me that you must teach cdrecord to use the right drive.
Maybe it uses a standard device /dev/cdrom that is probably a link to
/dev/sda
If that is the case you do it by renaming it to /dev/scsi_cdrom (linking to
the same drive)
and creating a new link /dev/cdrom to /dev/hda.
Better still to find how to configure cdrecord (you can probably give the
destination as an attribute to the command.
I hope this helps. Actually I am fairly new to Linux although I was a Unix
system manager.

I am using a Smart and Friendly CDRW-2224 (CD Racer)to record cd's.
Everything works correctly except for erasing rewritable cd's. If I try
the blank=fast mode it doesn't erase the disk correctly. It will only
record for a few seconds on the disk afterwards and stop. However, if I
boot into Windows and use Easy CD Creator and the quick erase mode it
works fine. However, I hate having to boot into windows just to erase a
cd. Any ideas?

There's a beta NFS V3 server available for your kernel. It looks a little
difficult to install.
You're probably using 8 KB I/O sizes, (the Linux _client_ defaults to 1 KB),
but worth checking. Also, make sure you're running biods, but if you're
using the out-of-kernel server I don't know if that helps at all.
Sorry - Linux NFS is not yet an area of my expertise.
>the service & support from HP is so slow that I need to solve this myself.
NFS on Linux is kind of a common issue among the commercial Unix vendors.
It's a good test area to see which vendors are serious about supporting
Linux. Even those who are can't justify spending many resources nor have
they quite figured out what level of support is reasonable.
However, things will get a lot better when the Linux in-kernel V3 becomes
part of the basic system.

Hi,
I am running kernel 2.0.36 and have been having troubles using an
Adaptec AHA-2940 with my external SCSI ZIP drive.
The drive basically works, but when I am transferring large files, the
entire computer hangs. Other times, I have seen the following message

happen):

Note that after I changed the disk, it did calc the disk size correctly.
I have tried a short (1m) good quality cable, so I don't think I am

says that it is setting low byte termination. I only have the one
