Strange thing, folks!

I've looked at the Xfree86 packages of RedHat 7 installation and
found that Mach64 server is 3.3.6 and not 4.0.1. What is wrong?
I've read on the www.xfree86.org that this server is supported by
the new release. Can somebody explain it to me?

Thanks a lot

Hello,

I am having problems loading modules with my Mandrake 7.0, initially
kernel 2.2.x, now kernel 2.4.0 test 8.

I was having problem to access nfs file system, I had the modutils rpm
package version 2.1.x. I discovered that I had to update modutils in
order to load 2.4.0 modules, so did I, but the error messages are
exactly the same !

if i type:
insmod /lib/modules/2.4.0/kernel/fs/nfs/nfs.o
i have a page of unresolved external
lsmod gives me no loaded modules
modprobe never finds any modules, even if I give him the complete path
of a object file.

What should I do ?

Tony,

I'm running kernel 2.2.17 with the 3.3A drivers - Advansys UW2. Im using
a shielded 68 pin
cable with an active terminator on the end. My system will run fine for
weeks
with no problems. Then I will get a day when I get timeout errors.
Usually
while making a big tarball. Then no problems for awhile again. I'm going
to try
a Tekram this week and pound it.

Also aside from verifying that you are properly terminated, your drive
should
also be actively cooled.

First, you may want to stick with RH6.2 -- I've heard some horror stories.
I run 6.2 on all my boxes (I admin for a research lab), and it works
great. Just be sure to install all the updates from Redhat's site.

Second, the card is absolutely supported (in either version) and should
be automatically recognized and installed during an installation. If
you put the card in after the install, to get the driver loaded at
bootup you'll need to add the following line to /etc/conf.modules
(which kudzu may or may not do for you -- I don't use it):

alias scsi_hostadapter aic7xxx

This tells the kernel module loader (kmod) that when it finds the
scsi_hostadapter, it should load the aic7xxx module.

The thing is, that there is not a Mach64 _server_ anymore, rather than
one single X server, which utilizes Mach64 loadable modules in 4.0.1.
So check out the /usr/X11R6/lib/modules directory and you'll see about
it. Just why the XF86_Mach64 server is still on your disk, I wouldn't
know, perhaps you simply upgraded without erasing the old packages
prior to that?

Hi all,

I have just installed redhat on my machine. I have a creative
soundblaster in one of my pci slots but it seems to have been ignored -
no mention of it in the installation.

I got it from a friend - i think it should work !

The speakers seem to be fine also - i get the noise from them when
plugging/unplugging them. Is there any way i can see if redhat has
installed the required drivers for my soundcard ?

Also, i dont have any manuals with it - im not sure which socket to put
the speaker jack into, there are three, along with what seems to be a
games port.

Thanks for any help on these points.

I have been using one such board together with Slackware 4.0 for almost
a year and it has been a very good board all the time. The onboard SCSI
is used together with an internal 9 GB drive (U2W, 80 MB/s).

My only problem so far with this machine was that one SIMM was broken at
delivery. The macine refused to boot or even show the CMOS setup. Once
the broken simm was removed everything worked fine and I later got a
replacement for the broken simm. I can't blame this problem on the
motherboard.

I have RH 5.5 Linux running on a 486/33. It runs fine and I can even run X

Subject: red-hat 6.2 installation problem on HP pavilion
Date: Tue, 03 Oct 2000 12:43:47 -0500

Hi

This is a followup on my previous email, asking about installing
red-hat
on HP Pavilion systems. I thank all people who responded. I think I
have to be
more specific about my problem. Sorry for sending a long message.

I have got an HP Pavilion 8755 (Pentium III, 128 MB RAM, 30 GB HD,
M90
monitor). The machine has Windows-Me running on it. I started with
installation of Red-hat on it. This is what I did:

Using fdisk, I removed all partitions, and created a new primary DOS
partition using 15 GB of my hard disk. The rest was left untouched
to be
used by linux installation. Then I put Windows back on this disk.
Till now
everything is working. Now I start booting the system with Red-Hat
CD.
First of all I cannot run the GUI version of installation. I do not
know
why (any clue?), but it is not important at the moment. OK I start
with the
text mode. Now, if I go to "server-mode" installation, the
installation
program takes over the control, deletes all partitions, continues
with making new partitions, and starts the setup. This actually
deletes
my Windows. That probably means there is no specific hardware
incompatibility, at least during the installation of non-X
applications.
(I have actually another problem here for introducing the graphics
to
Linux at this stage, but let's leave it for later).

If I try either the "workstation" or the "custom" modes of
installation,
during the specification of file systems in "druid" I get a strange
error. The
program is always complaining that "boot file_system is too big",
even
if I ask for allocation of only 1 MB on /boot file_system. What if I
delete this partition? Then the /
directory is considered as the boot file_system, and "druid" cannot
allocate any space to it. OK when I try to ignore this, and say "OK
perhaps /boot is not necessary. Let's continue.", the installation
task
terminates and I get the "signal 11" error. Of course, I am not sure
if this is beacuse of the partitioning problem. But at the moment I
cannot think of anything else.

I appologize for my long email, and thank you for your assistance.

Ummm, the eizo L350 LCD only takes analog input. I have a ViewSonic VP181 that
has both digital and analog inputs, and I have not been able to get the digital
input to work (I haven't tried recently due to the press of work). Xfree 3.3.6
and 4.0.1 does not seem to have options for the digital control (I currently
have a PCI G200 SDRam with digital add-on, but have tried a G400 Max with its
digital add-on in the past, and will be going back to that when I switch
motherboards). I queried accelerated-X and Metro-X and they did not support
the digital add-on in the matrox board either. Finally, the 2.4 test versions
now have support for digital in the frame buffer support, but I haven't been
able to actually get it to work..... I would love to talk to anybody that has
gotten the digital dfp support to work in Linux with Matrox cards.

The only solution I could think of involved using a Windows machine as a front
end and using VNC to connect to the Linux machine. This was unacceptable due
to VNC not supporting wheel mice on the Windows boxen.

i found only one solution till now: remove the keyboard connector and plug

OK, you've compiled the IDE-SCSI modules and set up modules.conf
accordingly.

Have you added the "append ide-scsi=hdd" to your lilo.conf file?
Have you rerun /sbin/lilo to build a new boot record?
Have you redirected your /dev/cdrom to /dev/scd1?
Have you installed the cdrecord package?
Have you installed one of the cdtoaster frontents to cdrecord?
What sort of problem are you encountering?
