Our sysop has build a cluster based on PIIs a few months ago
and I think he started with reading the Beowulf-HOWTO. Our
machine is also used for number crunching (quantum chemical
calculations).

I've got a 36 GB HD :-) and I do have a 28 GB FAT32 partition at the
beginning of it, and a 7 GB ext2 partition at the end of it. I haven't had
any problems.

Perhaps the problem has to do with putting your FAT32 partition at the *end*
of the drive?

You will have to use /dev/hdd4, not /dev/hdd
That works with my computer, furthermore, you must have atapi-floppy compiled
in the kernel (or as module).

My problem is, eject /dev/hdd won't work, nor does eject /dev/hdd4

I once had a similar problem under SuSE. Using apsfilter,
when printing a plain text file, it would print it at about
half the size, rotated 90 degrees. Turned out to be a
filter `problem': apsfilter had been set up to print 2up (I
found this out upon printing my first multi page text file).
Maybe you have a similar problem (I'm not familiar with RH,
so I can't say for sure).

OK i read the HPT366 mini howto and managed to install the drive with the
boot options and append the same line in lilo. But now i wanted to patch the
kernel as written and the patch asks me which files to patch and so on? I'm
new to linux so please give me more detailed instructions how to add the IDE
patch to the kernel (2.2.14 and the patch also for 2.2.14!). I also don't
know where or how to start the make config configuration up???
please help!

Can a USB cable be wired as a "crossover" connection,
allowing PC to PC communications?

One approach would be USB-to-10BaseT devices, connected with
a 10BaseT crossover cable, but is the design of the USB interface
such that something simpler is possible?

If so, is there software to use it for, say, file transfers?

More generally, is there a driver for TCP/IP-like support?

Thanks.

For both telnet and ssh, it's done in conf files. For telnet, check out
/etc/securetty . root can only login on a secure terminal. Stating that
ttyp[0...x] are secure allows remote root login. Why would anyone want to do
this anyhow? The only time I would ever consider this is for serial port
terminals. sshd(1/2) have their own configuration files. sshd2 has a
"PermitRootLogin" clause in /etc/ssh2/sshd2_config. sshd1 has something
similar in /etc/ssh/sshd_config.

I'm an x86 person too. :) There are several X servers available for the PPC
platform.

Our architecture "sucks", but we're proud of it because it's vendors have
backed it with more than just talk [and will hopefully continue to do so].

Get hold of the new Netscape preview release, or even the final version
when it is released.

It supports multiple mail accounts - looks much better too.

The problem is that some but not all ATAPI Zip drives skip the first track
(32 sectors i.e. partition table). Therefore one some drives you cannot
access the partition table whereas you can on others. If you write
another partition table on drives, that skip the first track, you will not
be able to read it on other drives that do not skip the first track.

The best you can do to work around that is to use factory partitioned disks
and mount them as partitioned disk (e.g. /dev/hdd4) on drives that support
the partition table and mount them as superfloppy (e.g. /dev/hdd) on drives
that skip the first 32 sectors.

I have already called Iomega-Support, but the man on the phone had no clue.

In my eyes this is a big mess, and if anyone knows a solution that allows
to access all sectors on all drives, please let me know, since I have
got several drives of both types here at work.
