I've installed SuSe linus 6.1, with a Voodoo3 card. I've installed it

Yeah that must be it. All us Linux zealots never saw enough of Windows
to appreciate its very special goodness. That Mr. Gates fellow really
ought to get out of the lab where he does all that secret scientific
invention and spend a little time marketing that there OS of his.
The grudge most of us have is MS's monopolistic greed and bullying
approach to the PC world. I use MS when appropriate (to launch games
once in a while at home, and to the occasionally necessary Word or
Powerpoint file at work) but mostly use my computer as a workstation
on which I simulate communications and math problems. Windows truly
sucks for this application, but if Microsoft had its way, I'd have no
alternative (at least on PC hardware).
I daresay most Linux users know far more about Windows than most
Windows users know about Linux (or about Windows, for that matter).

hte following error.
"MODPROBE error
The following error occurred running the modprobe program:

It then proceeds to try manual configuration..which fails as well.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I am running Redhat 6.0

Does anyone know of cheap but reliable multi-port serial cards (4 ports or
more) that can be used with external modems to create a PPP server (ISA or
PCI).
I am based in the UK, so any contact numbers etc would be useful.
If you have prices, web links, technical info etc that would be great.
We have 4 telephone numbers on a hung-group and I want to setup a Linux box
as a PPP server so that users can dial-in and access the company's network
for e-mail etc.
If you could please reply to my e-mail address I would be most grateful.

AFAIK, the BP6 is currently the only dual Board for PPGA Celerons.
All the other dual boards I'm aware of are for Slot 1 CPUs
(Pentium II/III).
There are adaptor boards (manufactured by MSI) that allow you to
fit a PPGA Celeron into a Slot 1 socket, but given that the BP6
is available (and working fine with Linux -- I'm using one right
now) and since you have already settled for Celerons (i.e. no
plans of upgrading to PIII later), I don't see any advantage in
using one of the slot 1 boards. The price/performance ratio of
the BP6 is hard to beat. So, yes, BP6 is the way to go.
Note however that there have been rumors of Intel deliberately
disableing SMP functionality in all the new Celerons in order
to force SMP users to buy their more expensive slot 1 CPUs.
I have not yet seen any confirmation that this has actually
happened, though (anyone ?), and my BP6 is running fine with
the two Celerons I bought roughly two weeks ago :-)

SCSI emulation is not relevant for the parallel port drives.

Of course ? You _do_ need a recent version of the cdrecord
program and you must have built it to use the 'pg' driver,
but beyond that it should work.
(The HP PP CD writers are probably the most popular PARIDE devices.)

While your premise is true, it is quite irrelevant. "cdrecord"
knows all about the PARIDE drivers and works quite well.

Subject: bootnet.img: support for DEC21143 (tulip.o)
Date: Fri, 13 Aug 1999 13:44:11 GMT
Hello,
I am trying to ftp install RedHat Intel 6.0 onto a Crystal CS500.
I am having all sorts of fun and games getting the NIC to work.
The system has an integrated card (CPU, keyboard, mouse, NIC etc all
on one card) and the ethernet subsystem is based on the DEC21143
chipset.
Install sees the NIC but when I try to connect to the network it
fails. I get errors on the hub (a nice flashing red LED). RedHat
support are on the case and I am also wading through the readmes, FAQs
and web pages but I have not found anything too helpful.
The Linux-Tulip information page,
http://www.bmen.tulane.edu/~siekas/tulip.html
is being updated and I've not found anything of direct relevance in
Donald Becker's page except for the diagnostic program which I will
try out soon.
I am doing an ftp install because although I have the RedHat Cds I
don't have a SCSI CD for the Crystal. A colleague originally
installed the system using an IDE CD (powered by *another* PC!) but
the install only worked when an IDE CD was present, removing it (or
not powering it) killed the network connection (?). Sometimes it
didn't work even with the CD attached.
Given that there is a brain-damaged installation on my system I have
tried using linuxconf to reinstall the tulip driver and I also tried
the de4x5 driver, neither worked.
I have also copied the entire CD set onto the hard disk but I don't
get the option to do a hard disk based install ... I suspect this is
because the cd image is on the system partition ?
I've also tried the expert install without any luck.
I think the problem may be either that the card is trying to run at
100Mb/s when it should be 10Mb/s or the driver embedded in bootnet and
the kernel is not suitable for my system.
So ...
1. has anyone ever successfully ftp installed on a system like mine
using a boot floppy and ftp ?
2. can anyone talk me through making a bootnet.img with the latest
tulip.o ?
If I have to I will recompile the kernel or drop in another NIC but I
would rather crack this problem and do a clean install from scratch so
I can use the integrated NIC and repartiton the hard disk.
If I have missed any information sources or if anyone needs more
information, please feel free to email me.
If anyone posts a reply I would be very graeful if you could also cc
me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Many thanks in advance for any advice or pointers!
Cheers,
Andy.

This is Unix, you have to mount the zip disk first (and it will only
work when there's a disk in it, of course ;-) ). On my system (RH 6.0),
my SCSI zip drive is mounted as /dev/sda. If you're not sure on which
device it's mounted, try putting a disk in the zip drive and try 'eject
-s /dev/sda'. If the disks pops out, it's a go!
Once you know in which device it's mounted, you should create a symbolic
link lik this:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Aug 9 20:32 /dev/zip ->
/dev/sda
and put the appropriate entry in /etc/fstab so that any users can mount
:
/dev/zip /mnt/zip msdos noauto,user 0 0
This uses MSDOS, but if you don't plan to share the zip disk with a PC
or a Mac, you should use a Unix format.
Hope this helps.

Had similar experiences with SIIG products ......
Dual isa parallel port -- returned because port speed never got past a ps2
port .. even in ecp mode it was only 1/3 the speed of my onboard port .
Haven't tried the new one yet ( the gave rma via email pretty quick tho, but
took two weeks to get new one ) .
PowerWiz 300 power supply --- DOA out of box -- had to mail back to them and
new one worked ok (except plugs are a bit shoddy) for 6 months, until heat
wave when power was cut back a little .. thing wouldn't even turn on . I
thought it was dead until next day (when heat broke & power turned up) it
worked fine .
There email response is ok ( 1-2 days ), but forget about the phones .

Which one you need depends on what libs you have. I think the G460 servers are

Let me know if you are able to get it running at a color depth higher than 8
