I need some "been there - done that" advice for putting together the best
bang-for-the-buck Linux desktop...

I am primarily going to be doing web development work, about half of the
time running under X using a java ide like JBuilder... (which has some
pretty hefty requirements... I am running it now on a P350 with 128 MB of
memory, and it isn't that great...) I would also like to be able to run
VMWare or Win4Lin to be able to run the few apps that I have to that only
run under Windows (I have to be able to run IE to check web sites...)

The main question is... Would I be better off with a single processor
like an AMD Athelon 800, or dual 500 or 600 mHz processors... I have
gotten advice on both sides...

Thanks in advance...

JH

Congratulations! the Linux newsgroups are a fabulous resource for us

I suspect that the noise is just the sound server starting up. My
generic desktop does the same thing.

Enjoy!

Subject: K7V AC97 sound & Linux - please help
Date: 8 Dec 2000 10:57:13 -0700

My system:
  K7V-T w/ 700 Tbird not overclocked & 128MB Crucial
  Matrox G400 DH AGP
  Tekram DC390F
  Netgear FA310
  No IDE disks or cdroms

I've installed Slackware 7.0 kernel 2.2.13 w/ Alsa sound drivers
0.5.9a & kernel 2.2.17 (with included OSS/FREE).

Using kernel 2.2.13 & Alsa I had sound mostly working for about a week
using these modules

  snd-card-via686a 6908 0
  snd-pcm 28952 0 [snd-card-via686a]
  snd-timer 7648 0 [snd-pcm]
  snd-ac97-codec 23904 0 [snd-card-via686a]
  snd-mixer 23088 0 [snd-ac97-codec]
  snd-mpu401-uart 1948 0 [snd-card-via686a]
  snd-rawmidi 9048 0 [snd-mpu401-uart]
  snd-seq-device 3080 0 [snd-rawmidi]
  snd 35276 1 [snd-card-via686a snd-pcm
  snd-timer
  snd-ac97-codec snd-mixer snd-mpu401-uart snd-rawmidi snd-seq-device]
  soundcore 2372 2 [snd]

"mostly" meaning aplay & play worked with .au's & .wav' & playmidi
looked like it was working but no sound came out. During this week I
performed several shutdowns; then on one startup the system locked up
tight while loading the snd-card-via686a module & it's done that ever
since, rebooting & power cycling hasn't helped. No messages, no
syslog, no ooops, no nada.

I installed kernel 2.2.17 with its OSS/FREE (downloaded from
kernel.org). It boots & runs fine except for no sound. Here's the
results:

  bash-2.03# insmod -v soundcore
  bash-2.03# insmod -v sound
  bash-2.03# insmod -v uart401
  bash-2.03# insmod -v sb irq=6 io=0x320 dma=1
./sb.o: init_module: Device or resource busy

>From dmesg

Soundblaster audio driver Copyright (C) by Hannu Savolainen
  1993-1996
  sb: dsp reset failed.

Both kernels are compiled with pci quirks enabled.

I've done a lot of rtfm'ing & tried a lot of stuff without success.

I'd appreciate any clues, hints, or email discussion anyone's willing
to offer.

What kind of error message did yo get? Are you able to boot from a
floppy like "toms root & boot"?

Does that boot disk use LILO? If LILO is the problem you should make a
boot floppy without lilo bo doing:

cp /path/to/kernel/vmlinuz /dev/fd0
rdev /dev/fd0 /dev/where_your_root_partition_lives

i'm tired of those logitech nazis,

go to http://www.logitech.com/cf/support/mousefiles.cfm

well you see they're offering software support here. as usual, operating
systems are limited to windoze and MacOS -- this isn't the point.

now lets take a look on the link:

windoze links point to mousefiles_pc.cfm

Ok, you get it right? windoze IS NOT an Operating System but a pc, so
i'm currently running Linux on my windoze box.

So they completely ignore what a PC is, do they know what is a Mac?
well perhaps they know what is a mac but you can take for sure they
ignore what MacOS is. This's as real as they provide support for MacOS
and claim to be providing support
for Macintosh.

hello! foolish ignorants! LinuxPPC exists! OpenBSD exists!
<insert your favourite Macintosh supported operating system here>
exists!

Sorry I'm late getting back to you! OK here it is. I have recompiled
the kernel wtih the modules suggested installed.
I used :-
"make xconfigure" & selected the modules. After it had run I used:
make dep
make clean
make install
make modules
make modules_install

then I performed this step while still logged on as root
cd /etc/rc.d
chmod 755 init.d/*
cd rc3.d
ln -s ../init.d/modules.init 05modules.init

I then rebooted, but I still got this on boot up

USB-HCI Failed
usb-uhci Failed
usb-ohci Failed

Either the USB is disabled in the BIOS or the IRQ is disabled.
Enable it!

Well the USB is enabled (works OK in windows) but I cannot find
anywhere a reference to the USB IRQ!

BTW I can get it to load if I do an insmod!

Works at least on AlphaLinux. Every error correction action is
logged. When un-correctable error occurs, the system halts. That is
what happened to my UDB suffering heat death.

If the failure happens in the reporting area, and is
non-correctible, you are right. However this should be very
rare. The more important thing is to get reports of corrections
successfully performed, and where. Consistent errors in a
particular memory area then indicate incipient total failure, and
can help in maintenance.

I suspect either your kernel is too old (Red Hat 6.2 and 7.0 definately work
for my 2930U's), your scsi chain is improperly terminated, or possibly you have
more than one device with the same scsi id. I've definately seen hangs with
improper termination (which is the bane of scsi). For the 2930U, it must be
active termination on each of the buses used (fortunately there isn't wide
support, so you avoid several usual problems). As always, termination must be
at the end of the scsi chain, and either an explicit terminator, a cable that
provides termination, or possibly a device that has termination enabled. Note,
my experience has been to never trust scsi devices to properly terminate the
chain, and to always provide explicit termination. In the past:

        http://www.scsifaq.org

has provided a better FAQ for scsi questions than the HOWTO, but it doesn't
seem to be on the air as I write this message.

I've had ECC memory go bad that Linux would refuse to boot (but Lose98 booted
fine, obviously not caring if pages were corrupted). So from that datapoint,
it looks like ECC support is at least enabled in Linux.

Yeah, I made Debian 2.2 boot floppies and it found it fine when I

problems with aic7xxx. I will try an image they point to if I can't
