I use a Realtek 8139 (I haven't seen a driver difference between the 8139 and
8139A), but I have compiled the driver into the kernel (not as a module). When
I do this, I see the detection of the module at bootup:
Aug 10 18:26:26 arainna kernel: rtl8139.c:v1.04 9/22/98 Donald Becker
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/rtl8139.html
Aug 10 18:26:26 arainna kernel: eth0: RealTek RTL8139 Fast Ethernet at 0x6800,
IRQ 12, 00:e0:7d:74:08:2d.A
Once this is done, it is configured using with /etc/conf.modules with the
following line:
alias eth0 rtl8139
This should work for you, and I hope that it helps.

I have just installed COL 2.2 and I am having a few problems finding
my internal Iomega Zip100 drive.
When the kernel is booting it says IDE-SCSI OK and seems to access the
Zip drive.
In system info, attached devices, the zip drive appears under SCSI as:
Host SCSI0 Channel: 00 ID: 00 Lun: 00
Vendor: Iomega Model: zip100
Type: Direct Access ANSI SCSI revision
Please help me, if I cant access my zip drive I'm stuffed

i have problems to get /dev/sequenzer feeded by emu10k1.
Except the synth everything gets feeded ok and sounds a great.
Only SoundTracker and VoodooTracker giving me a core-dump and

Please write also if you KNOW that this is a driver-bug not fixed yet.

Hi All!
I'm a complet Linux newbie and so far I'm having mixed results. I
installed RH 6.0, went into Gnome/linxconfig and set up my ppp port. when I
did there was a pull down option for my /dev/modem which I seletcted and all
was well with my world. I decided to make some changes and re-installed
Linux. Since then there has been no option for /dev/modem. What changed and
why? I've tried typing it in on that line and it persists but modem does not
work. I found references to "modemtool" but I cant find this utility. Where
is it? I haven't changed anything on this system between installs except the
installation of my lan card. I did not install it in the first build (when
modem was recognized), did install it in second and did not install it there
after. Thanks all!

There's not much call for usage of MMX within the core kernels of most
operating systems, neither Microsoft nor Linux. The MMX features are
mostly for the use of applications programs that do a lot of graphics,
and their libraries.

Focus in an X session is handled by your Window manager, not
X-windows. What WM are you using?
Try removing one processor, see if that fixes the time problem.
If it does, hehe, you'll have to deal with the latency. :)

It is actually. But if the machine isn't swapping (ie when I do a top,
the swap spaces usage is 0) it shouldn't make a difference. Or am I

Now that you mention it, I have seen
a usitiity that will take PostScript pages
and automatically make them print first one
side, then another. You have to manually
flip the pages.
Can't remember the name of it, though.
Sorry, if you have a duplex printer, don't know
how to make it work.

Terence,
I may be wrong, but my understanding is that Linux doesn't support ATAPI
CD Writers, only SCSI ones. I have an HP 7110i, and it only picks it up
as a CD-ROM drive. If I am wrong, I am sure someone in this newsgroup

What kind (model#) of printer do you have? It's possible
that you're sending information that it doesn't understand
(i.e. sending a non-PS printer PS).

Hi
Somehow I have the same problem - except some differences
Creative Labs SB-AWE32
IRQ 5, DMA 1+5, i/o 220
I tried to recompile my kernel and afterwards it doesn't work
any more. I run the sndconf-tool and then I can use the card
as root but not as any other user.
It says that I don't have permissions. I added the users quite
normally (useradd ...). As I don't know what permissions I need
to use the soundcard I looked at /dev/dsp* and /dev/audio* if I
had read permissions - and I have them as the root-user.
Now, the above could be a different problem, but:
When I compile the kernel with the exact data of my card he tells
me that the IRQ is already in use. Having a look at my interrupts
shows me that my soundcard is on IRQ 5.
I thought "ok, he found my card before with something else and then
tried to use that IRQ to configure the soundcard again".
Running sndconf hang up my computer.
Then I tried it out with modules, but it didn't work.
If somebody can help me, I would be thankful

You're correct - it doesn't really like ATAPI CD-R/RW drives
but it *will* let you fool it into believing that an ATAPI
drive is a SCSI drive. There's good information about the
process in the CD-Writing-HOWTO, here's the url:
http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/CD-Writing-HOWTO-2.html#ss2.1
In a nushell, compile into your kernel SCSI emulation for
CDROMs. You then need to put a boot option in your lilo
config that says "hd?=ide-scsi" where the ?=the device. My
8100i is the master device on my secondary IDE channel so on
my setup I use "hdc=ide-scsi".

Currently I've successfully installed Caldera Open Linux 2.2 on one of
my machines. Everything works fine, but now I want to set up my modem.
Is it easier to configure an internal or external modem?
I've got two different Modems...both internal modems.
One is a zoom 56k Fax Modem...the other is a USR Sportster 33,000. I
don't believe it is a winmodem (it fits into an ISA slot).
Will either of these work with Linux?
How to I go about getting Linux to see the modem?
How do I set up the modem to connect to my ISP?
What information do I need to gather to do the configuration?
Am I better off getting an external modem?
Any information would be greatly appreciated...
