Actually, the K6-2/III _does_ support SMP; it's just that it also needs
support from the motherboard chipset, and none of the chipsets available
provide it. K7 also supports SMP, and this time, there is support in the
chipset as well.

I'd suggest using the Intel 10/100 card (100B is what it's called if I
recall). Given that NT 3.51 and the first release or two of NT 4.0 did
not autodetect this card (and that the driver on the NT media, including
service packs, is WAY behind), I was ASTONISHED to see Redhat 5.X
autodetect this card, and install the drivers.
I've had nothing but good luck w/ this card/Linux.

According to _Linux Today_, Linux runs on the Merced, where a
certain rival OS from a well-known company based in Redmond doesn't.
And Compaq are dropping support for NT on the Alpha, in favour of
Linux and Tru-64.
Also, SGI have reacently moved away from running NT on their Intel
boxes, in favour of Linux.
It looks like Linux is starting to displace Billy's Bloated OS.
Meanwhile, M$ are pushing a version of NT for embedded devices,
such as pacemakers and hospital intensive care equipment. Brings
a whole new meaning to ``blue screen of death'', doesn't it?
Anyone considering buying MSFT put options?

I'm using Debian 2.1, with kernel 2.2.10 on the potato distribution.
I had installed the emu10k1 0.3b files from Creative following the
manual instructions, however, it didn't seem to get detected. (That
means I uncommented the alias for the soundcore and put in an alias
for the emu10k1 and the pre-install/post-removes also) Afterwards, I
did a modconf and installed emu10k1.o that way. modprobe emu10k1
didn't report anything, but upon restarting Linux, I saw that emu10k1
Creative SBLive! detected :) Now here is the current situation: I
can play audio CDs fine from xmcd, but I can't play any WAVs or MP3s
using xmms 0.91. It gives me an error citing 3 probably causes:
Couldn't open audio
Please check that:
1. You have the correct output plugin selected
2. No other programs is blocking the soundcard
3. Your soundcard is configured properly
With xmms, I tried the 3 output types...to disk was fine, but to OSS
and to eSound had the same problems as mentioned above.
I will include my /dev/sndstat and hope that someone can help me.

2.2.9 and up work just fine *in UDMA-33*, which requires you run the
drive makers dos utility to switch them down from UDMA-66, it is not an
auto-switch in my experience.

Actually i believe (from what i've seen) that it is just common practice to mount
things under the /mnt dir, just so you know its mounted. I have /mnt/cdrom

Subject: recommendations for _cheap_ server?
Date: 26 Aug 1999 21:01:02 -0700
Hi,
I know this question has been brought up many times in this newsgroup,
with a variety of responses. I'm trying to build a server that will
mostly be used for FTP, CVS, telnet, and possibly a web or database
server. The main thing about this is that there will basically be around
5 people using these services, so the only important thing we want is a
good network connection and a box that never ever goes down. Oh, and
naturally, as cheap as possible.
So, the main question I have is about the processor and motherboard. I am
considering either a K6-2 or a Celeron A. The K6's seem to be a lot
cheaper, but I've read some things about the motherboards having some
stability problems. Any word on this?
And on the network card...I'm looking at a Linksys EtherFast PCI 10/100
PNP card (LNE100TX). Just wondering: will the PNP be a problem, and can I
use the tulip drivers with this card?
Thanks,
Janet

My mobo, a TYAN S1590S, has a VIA chipset. I'd had UDMA-33 enabled for
about 3 months now, with no problems. The ALI chipset may not be so
lucky. I get about 12-13 m/s on the primary interface, and about 8 m/s
on the secondary. When I switch the drives, the speed difference stays
with the interface assignment. Now, if only my scsi was so fast, an
aha1540CF is doing about 1.5 m/s.

I'm running a K6-III/400 on an ALi Aladdin V chipset with 100 MHz system
bus. The SiS6326 AGP video card that came with the box does great with W98,
but the X Window driver is broken as of 3.3.3.1-1.1, so can't run X yet. In
looking at some inexpensive alternatives, I found one that can't handle the
100 MHz bus (locks the system) and two that work OK until I try to shut down
W98, whereupon they locked up with a gray screen. One was a PCI card, the
other an AGP. The AGP card's vendor (Gainward) responded to e-mail, saying
that a video bios upgrade was available for download, as well as a driver.
I couldn't use the Gainward with Linux because it has the S3 Savage3D and
there isn't yet an X driver (pay attention!). I had already returned the
card, so did not get to check out the upgrades.
W98 came with an ALi M1541/1543 driver diskette, one driver for IDE bus
mastering (V. 2.90), another for AGP (V. 1.20). Don't know where Linux
stands with these. This may be why my SiS6326 AGP doesn't work with X
Windows any better than it does.
