Well, offhand, I can't think of anything. Benchmarks are WAY too easy
to manipulate. The only benchmarks that mean anything are how it feels
to use the computer that has that CPU in it. If I upgrade my K6-2 300
to a 600MHz anything, that's going to be faster. So I might as well do
it for as cheaply as I can. Servers are a slightly different story, in
that they're usually dedicated to doing one thing. You find out what
that thing is, and find somebody (who doesn't write the software that
you want to run) who's done comparisons of systems to run it on, and go
with those. For the most part, I think that CPU comparisons are a bit
silly, you should be comparing SYSTEM speed, as in how well/fast all of
the components work together.

Where would these be shipping from Kent? Do you know if they're
essentially the same as the Sony GDM-1962? If they are, they should be
useful on Sun systems as well.

None that are free. If you want to use multiple monitors you will need to
purchase a commercial X server that supports multiple monitors.

Date: Sat, 4 Sep 1999 22:34:36 -0400
Help!
The message says it all. I tried to reduce the size of an empty primary DOS
partition (using cfdisk) from 2 gig to about 100 megs and then used cfdisk
to partition the 1.9 gigs into several partitions of type Linux. I did not
change the mount statement in the fstab, and this (I think/hope) is what's
causing the kernel panic. During boot up, the following line :
sda: sda1 sda2< sda5 sda6 sda7 sda8 sda9 sda10 sda11 sda 12>
appears, followed by 3 lines, all relating (I think) to the DOS partition.
The first begins starting with:
[MS-DOS FS Rel. 12,FAT 16,...
I get a line about Transaction Block Size = 524, then the line:
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:05
The rescue disk I made before starting in with this foolishness produces
read errors.
If it is the fstab file I need to fix, anybody have any ideas about how i
get to it? I f you have any other suggestions, please let me know.
Thanks,

I have been trying to configure XFree86 in Linux 6.2 for use with my Generic
Banshee card. This, I believe, is built into the SVGA server.
I can configure it fine, however when starting X, there is a moving "noise"
down the left third of the screen. There is also more "noise" caused by
moving or resizing windows.
It's not a problem with the card, since I can install it fine in Redhat 6
with the
additional rpm's available.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA

Don't forget Syndex's 22Disk a nice little disk transfer
utility to covert CP/M files to msdos. also could copy to CP/M from
Dos. it was a shareware program that was not timedated or crippled.
Syndex also had Anadisk that would Anylize a disk and tell you how it
was created. Teledisk that lets one transfer disks via files, and 22
Nice which was a CP/M 2.2 emulator for Msdos. They may even have a web
page. try http://www.sybex.com or is it http://www.syndex.com The
latest shareware programs can be found on the oak.oakland.edu in the
Simtel disk area. or check out ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/simtel
http://www.cdrom.com also has an online search engine for looking for
files.

I get about 10-15% speed improvements for cc over gcc under OSF
if I take my time and try different combinations of optimizations
for each.
You can note this comparison is impossible to do under linux
as Dec doesn't have ANY compiler that works under linux.
There is a chance Compaq, in its infinite wisdom, may port a
compiler to linux as a 'value added' option (in fact their reps
told me it was under consideration), but I don't see anyone using
it except people really concerned with 'super' computing. As to
the kernel folks making any sort of concessions for a proprietary
compiler, I'd be surprised.
I'd much rather see Compaq working with the folks at Cygnus to
make gcc on alpha faster. That would sell more alpha linux boxes,
as well as generate a lot of positive PR. Compaq might be best
off trying to maximize hardware sales instead of convincing
people to use the poorly administered Dec licensing scheme, and
'value added' options under linux.

If your rescue disk is dinged, then go to a PC somewhere and download
tomsrtbt -- there is a version you can install from DOS.
http://www.toms.net/~toehser/rb/
tomsrtbt is a Linux-on-a-disketter. Use this as your rescue disk, mount the
partition that contains /etc, and edit the fstab file.

Subject: Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 00:30

Hi,
the whole problem began with Windows98. I tried to reduce the size of my
Windows Partition with Partition Magic by 7 MB. When I restarted
scandisk found 400 MB lost clusters... Actually all still looked fine.
But from time to time my system froze and I was getting weird messages
that my registry is damaged. Than these errors occurred more often and
finally they didn't occur anymore - Windows would not start at all :-(
I tried to overwrite the installation by starting setup again - didn't
help. Also Norton Disk Doctor would not find any HD-errors.
Thus finally I decided to split the partition and install Redhat Linux
6.0. This actually works pretty fine except for some strange behavior
that I have not experienced before with Linux. E.g. when using XWindows
it may occur that suddenly the XServer would shutdown without any error
messages (at least not in /var/log/messages).
Also I usually have to start my computer 2-3 times because of this error
message:
VFS: Cannot open device 00:30
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 00:30
I really would like to know whether these errors have the same reason
and what causes them. Defect memory, HD, setup????

If you are trying to install Mach 64 using RedHat's distribution, you need to
go to the CD and look under the /RedHat/RPMS directory for
XFree86-Mach8-3.3.3.1-49.i386.rpm or some variation (not just Mach64). You
need to do a
rpm -Uvh XFree86-Mach64-3.3.3.1-49.i386.rpm from the directory this rpm is
resident,
or a
rpm -Uvh --force XFree86-Mach64-3.3.3.1-49.i386.rpm if you are having conflict
problems. This will get Mach 64 on your system.

Once you get Mach 64 on, xf86config should straighten up for you (If you are
using Redhat, Xconfigurator should probe your video card and set it up
automatically (you should be prompted to put your monitor specs in).
