Hi, I had the same problem, I went to Intel's site, got the driver, compiled and
installed it.

Works fine now.

Subject: Linux support for USB and IEEE 1394 drives?
Date: Mon, 15 Jan 2001 15:50:35 GMT

Hi,

I have finally got to the point where I have one more hard disk than
I have space in my computer. For this reason I am looking at buying
an external case for my IDE drive, though I am still in the process of
deciding between Firewire and USB solutions. I know that USB is
slower than Firewire, so my choice is going to be made on the
praticality of the solution rather than anything else. To help me,
could someone try answering the following questions:

   - Has anyone managed to get the MacAlley USB hard disk enclosure
working with Linux ( it is the only one I can find in my area )?

   - Where is IEEE 1394 support with Linux? If there is a beta version
of the driver, has anyone managed to get it working for
firewire hard-drives generally destined for the Mac market

   - Does anyone make USB / Firewire enclosures that aren't directed
     towards the Mac market?

 Thanks

 Andre

Sounds like you are using software GL rendering rather than hardware?
Time to check your MesaGL configuration?

I seem to like buying printers that do not work with Linux. I now have a

Hi,

Thanks for the advice. I didn't check the IRQ, but it seems that it's
free (ran cat /proc/interrupts) so there doesn't seem to be a problem
there.

Any other ideas? Or maybe some other situation where an ISA card is not
detected by kudzu, but works in the DOS environment?

Subject: Parallel ZIP 250 + Plextor CD-RW
Date: Mon, 15 Jan 2001 17:07:32 GMT

I just got a Plextor PlexWriter 12x10x32x ATAPI CD-RW drive that I added
to my custom built Linux box. My base install is SuSE 6.3, but it has
several packages that have been upgraded. I recompiled 2.2.18 to include
the SCSI CD-ROM support and disable ATAPI/IDE CD-ROM support. I already
had SCSI emulation built in for my parallel port ZIP 250 drive. Once I
rebooted though, I wound up with my CD-RW (and my ATAPI CD-ROM) working
on SCSI emulation. However, my ZIP drive no longer works. I cannot mount
/dev/sda4, it comes back with a message about the kernel not recognizing
/dev/sda4 as a valid block device. Does anyone have any idea about what
my problem is? Below is a copy of my dmesg output:

Subject: No sound in Labtec USB speakers (RH 7.0)
From: Jon Kvebaek <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I'm wondering whether anyone has got a set of Labtec USB speakers
working with RH 7.0 (2.2 Kernel).

After boot, The following modules are loaded on my machine:

lockd 31176 1 (autoclean)
sunrpc 52964 1 (autoclean) [lockd]
3c59x 19844 1 (autoclean)
3c509 5996 1 (autoclean)
agpgart 18600 0 (unused)
usb-uhci 19052 0 (unused)
usbcore 42088 1 [usb-uhci]

I have tried 'modprobe audio', which results in this:

ide-cd 23628 0 (autoclean)
audio 36192 0 (unused)
soundcore 2596 2 [audio]
lockd 31176 1 (autoclean)
sunrpc 52964 1 (autoclean) [lockd]
3c59x 19844 1 (autoclean)
3c509 5996 1 (autoclean)
agpgart 18600 0 (unused)
usb-uhci 19052 0 (unused)
usbcore 42088 1 [audio usb-uhci]

but no sound.

'usbview' shows the correct config - a Labtec USB Speaker System.

If anyone has a working setup (or know what do), I would like to know.

Please becareful and checkout the kernel mailing list: the current ATA
driver with mainboard using VIA chips are having disk corruption problems.

Also, according to the ATA developer, some of the ATA raid cards only
pretend to be hardware raid but in reality it is software only. The guy
didn't say which card though.

I have this CDRW working with Mandrake 7.2 (It also worked with 7.1).
Mine was detected and configured during install. A post to answer your

Yes, I had 1300 MB available, more than enough for a complete install and

It does seem as you really have a 3c905C and it is being used by the
vortex driver in 2.2.17. So here it seems that we really have a 3c905C
which works with the 2.2.x-kernel.

However, I have also seen other 3c905C cards which were detected as
above, but later useless. They were unable to send any data. (I don't
remember the exact problem, but ifconfig showed bad numbers on TX, RX or
errors).

Is your card really usable and not only detectable? If so, then there is
probably different versions of the 3c905C.

I think that RedHat has also included the 3c90x-driver from 3com with
their kernels. However, if you are using your own downloaded and
compiled 2.2.17 kernel that driver is not included.

The Sparc 2 has onboard AUI ethernet. You will most likely need to get
an AUI-to-RJ45 transceiver to use it on a 10baseT network. These can be
found on ebay among other places for $10 to $20.

Extra network cards are available, but are more expensive than they're
worth in my opinion. Actually, everything Sun is more expensive than
it's worth (but I'm sure there are people to disagree with me on that
one :-)

I have a Sparc 2 and a Sparc 5, both running Debian. They are great
computers, and as long as you don't expect too much out of them, they'll
suit you fine.

Are you asking how to add a SECOND port? There is an AUI port built-in to your
box. You can buy an AUI to 10base-T adapter pretty cheap on e-bay. If you do
need a second port, those too are avaialable on e-bay. You the S-bus type.
