Subject: Trouble mounting tape drive
Date: Sun, 27 Feb 2000 06:11:49 GMT

I am administrating a co-located server running Redhat 6.0. I had the ISP
install a Seagate 20gb tape drive for me, but when I issue the command via
Telnet:

"mount -t ext2 /dev/ht0 /mnt/tape"

I get a response:

"mount: /dev/ht0 is not a valid block device."

I also added the following to /etc/fstab:

"/dev/ht0 /mnt/tape ext2 noauto 0 0"

I tried formatting the tape using mkfs.ext2 but get a response:

"/dev/ht0 is not a block special device"

I can't imagine that the ISP forgot to put a tape in the drive but I will try
to confirm that with them (someday) when they answer the phone. Because I'm
new at this it seems more likely I'm just not doing it right.

Any pointers will be much appreciated!

Jeff

Subject: Help configuring NewMedia ethernet card
Date: Sun, 27 Feb 2000 06:23:19 GMT

Hi,

I am trying to set up NewMedia LiveWire 10/100 Ethernet card for Red Hat 6.

The card is not supported in the regular distribution, but I downloaded the
CardService Package at pcmcia.sourceforge.org by David Hinds, which I have
been told supports NewMedia.

So I followed the instructions at the web site and installed the package.
But when I run insmod nmclan_cs, I get

./nmclan_cs.o: unresolved symbol register_pccard_driver
./nmclan_cs.o: unresolved symbol ungister_pccard_driver

I am a total newbie, with only about a few month of Linux experience, and i
can't quite make sense of these error messages.

I am using MediaOne RoadRunner cable modem service

Any help is much appreciated!!

The CPU could certainly be dead without visible sign. It doesn't take
much to kill them. AFAIK, AMD K6 are worst in this respect because I
don't think they have a thermal shutdown like Intel P6. They can burn
themselves if installed without thermal grease between the CPU and
heatsink. Still, it could be bad memory, but I'd bet on the processor.

Look in your README file in Staroffice dir. Or type in mc at the
staroffice folder and then hit F3 on the README file. It should tell you
what you want to know. i think it is tar -xf or something like that it
says in there. Look on your Linux cd for the ncpfs under the rpms section
of it or go download it at www.google.com/linux

I'm not new to computers, but I'm new to this OS. I'm trying
to install Red Hat Linux 6.1 i386 and get the following
repeatable error:

Could not find platform independent libraries <prefix>

you may safely reboot your system.

Any ideas?
I'm running:
VL/ISA-PB486P3 motherboard
AMIBIOS 486 DX ISA (AB7532173) {chip possibly a bit crispy}
Diamondware Stealth 64 VL video card
DTC 2278S/D VL controller card

Maxtor 7541A HDD
Western Digital AC2540F HDD
ACER 620A ATAPI CD-ROM

DOS 6.22

Pretty primitive stuff. Should be supported - right?

Thanks in advance for any help.

For what it's worth, that error is being generated by Ghostscript.
It sounds like RedHat 6 has (mis)installed a print filter (which uses
Ghostscript) on your printer. I'd start at /etc/printcap and track
down the errant ghostscript settings.

Subject: Old ALR FLYER VL 486-33 Trouble (fwd)
Date: Sun, 27 Feb 2000 03:13:14 -0500

Hello,

I'm trying to reuse an old 'ALR FLYER VL 486-33' to give it away to
someone who needs a computer but can't afford one.

The system is setup as follows:

486-33 processor
Phoenix BIOS 1.02.06m

Memory Bank A: (on board) 4 Meg (working OK)
Memory Bank B: 16Meg 72 Pin N-Parity FAST PAGE memory module
Memory Bank C: 16Meg 72 Pin N-Parity FAST PAGE memory module

The system boots and works fine without any memory in Bank C. But it is a
little slow for RedHat 6.1 so I would like to have the extra 16Meg.

Here is a summary of my tests so far:

Notes =09Bank B =09Bank C =09Error Message=20
1 =094Meg =09nil =09none=20
2 =094Meg =094Meg =09640K Base Memory, 11264K Extended, Memory failure at 8=

F0,=20
=09=09=09read FFFF expecting FF20
=09
(I think that 1 of the 4Meg SIMMs is defective. I think it's the one in
bank C on the 2nd try. It is NOT used for tests with the 16Meg SIMMS)
The tests below are done with the same 4Meg SIMM but with 2 16Meg SIMMS.
The tests that seem repeated are done by either swapping places of the
16Meg SIMMS or using the 4-16 Meg SIMMS in different combinations.
=09=09=09
4=0916Meg=09nil=09none

FFFE,=20
=09=09=09read 0000 expecting 0024

As you can see the problem is not so much the SIMMS, since the memory
error stays the same even if they are swapped. I'm not sure what the
problem is exactly. Is it a BIOS problem? (I don't think so since the
diagram on the inside of the case (the only reference I have for this
system) indicates that 2x16Meg + 4Meg on board =3D 36Meg.  So I would guess
that the designers anticipated this setup.

I would really appreciate any help you might be able to give me. I hope
that the problem is solvable, because the prospect of running RedHat in
only 20Meg of RAM (in an everyday setting) seems a little too daunting and
slow.

Please email me a copy of your reply. I crossposted this message to a
couple of newsgroups to get a wider audience. Thanks very much.

Which one? One of the things that makes winmodems such a PITA is that there
is no standard for the things. In contrast, real modems use a standard
interface so any OS or app. that knows how to talk to a serial port can use
the thing. Next thing you know they'll start requiring "special" drivers
for keyboards too... Oh wait...

Well, FWIW Award BIOS is the most popular out there and many Award based

In Partition Magic, adjust the size of the "extended" partition from 70
to 250 MB, you will then be able to use the free space that will have
moved into your extended partition.

I'm having a similar problem with a new UDMA-66 drive on a motherboard
limited to UDMA-33. Looking at my hdparm -i ( and yours) it looks like the
drive is being treated like an old DMA1 (equiv. to PIO 2 or 3) drive.
Maxtor has a DOS utility on their site to make the drive report itself as
UDMA-33 or whatever mode you want which I think will solve the problem but I
havn't had the chance to try it yet.

Here are my hdparm numbers for the two drives on this system (Notice the
maxDMA lines):

First the 17GB 5400 RPM Maxtor UDMA-33
/dev/hda:
 Timing buffer-cache reads:   64 MB in  1.97 seconds =32.49 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 32 MB in 2.63 seconds =12.17 MB/sec

 Model=Maxtor 91728D8, FwRev=GAS54812, SerialNo=A80CEGEC
 Config={ Fixed }
 RawCHS=33483/16/63, TrkSize=0, SectSize=0, ECCbytes=29
 BuffType=3(DualPortCache), BuffSize=512kB, MaxMultSect=16, MultSect=16

 IORDY=on/off, tPIO={min:120,w/IORDY:120}, PIO modes: mode3 mode4

Now the 20GB 7200RPM Maxtor UDMA-66
/dev/hdb:
 Timing buffer-cache reads:   64 MB in  1.92 seconds =33.33 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads:  32 MB in  4.76 seconds = 6.72 MB/sec

 Model=Maxtor 92049U6, FwRev=RA530JN0, SerialNo=H60BFRTC
 Config={ Fixed }
 RawCHS=39709/16/63, TrkSize=0, SectSize=0, ECCbytes=57
 BuffType=3(DualPortCache), BuffSize=2048kB, MaxMultSect=16, MultSect=16
 DblWordIO=no, maxPIO=2(fast), DMA=yes, maxDMA=0(slow)
 CurCHS=2491/255/63, CurSects=40026672, LBA=yes, LBAsects=40026672

 IORDY=on/off, tPIO={min:120,w/IORDY:120}, PIO modes: mode3 mode4

As for the kernel messages you mentioned, I think they look pretty normal.
Here are two sets from machines here.

First, the machine discussed above, a cheap PC-Chips motherboard with SiS
chipset:

23 homer kernel: SIS5513: IDE controller on PCI bus 00 dev 01
23 homer kernel: SIS5513: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
23 homer kernel:     ide0: BM-DMA at 0x4000-0x4007, BIOS settings: hda:pio,
hdb
23 homer kernel:     ide1: BM-DMA at 0x4008-0x400f, BIOS settings: hdc:pio,
hdd
23 homer kernel: hda: Maxtor 91728D8, ATA DISK drive
23 homer kernel: hdb: Maxtor 92049U6, ATA DISK drive
23 homer kernel: hdc: RICOH CD-R/RW RW7040A, ATAPI CDROM drive
23 homer kernel: ide2: ports already in use, skipping probe
23 homer kernel: ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on irq 14
23 homer kernel: ide1 at 0x170-0x177,0x376 on irq 15
23 homer kernel: hda: Maxtor 91728D8, 16479MB w/512kB Cache, CHS=2100/255/63
23 homer kernel: hdb: Maxtor 92049U6, 19544MB w/2048kB Cache,
CHS=2491/255/63

Second, from a newer Intel BX based system with a slightly older drive :

PIIX4: IDE controller on PCI bus 00 dev 39
PIIX4: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
    ide0: BM-DMA at 0xf000-0xf007, BIOS settings: hda:DMA, hdb:pio
    ide1: BM-DMA at 0xf008-0xf00f, BIOS settings: hdc:DMA, hdd:pio
hda: Maxtor 90680D4, ATA DISK drive
hdc: ATAPI CD ROM DRIVE 50X MAX, ATAPI CDROM drive
ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on irq 14
ide1 at 0x170-0x177,0x376 on irq 15
hda: Maxtor 90680D4, 6485MB w/256kB Cache, CHS=826/255/63, UDMA

Oh, the hdparm numbers from that drive:

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffer-cache reads:   128 MB in  1.37 seconds = 93.43 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads:  64 MB in  6.60 seconds =  9.70 MB/sec

I've also run bonnie on all three drives in question and the numbers are in
line with the hdparm numbers.
