Subject: Should I abandon SCSI?

I'm at a crossroads now and I need some opinions
on whether or not I should abandon SCSI or
continue to invest in the technology.

I currently have two SCSI legacy devices,
an Exabyte 8200 SCSI tape drive and an HP Scanjet 3c.
Both of these devices used to work with my old Pentium
90Mhz machine with an Adaptec 2940. However, the
90Mhz machine is too slow now and I want to use
a 700Mhz machine. The Adaptec 2940 card will no
longer work in the new system.

I now have 4 new computers with CD-RW drives
and I'm planning on using these drives for archiving
files instead of the Exabyte 8200.

My HP Scanjet 3c is only capable of 600DPI.
I noticed many of the new scanners can do 1200DPI.

I can either dump both the Exabyte and HP Scanjet 3c
and purchase a new scanner or buy an Adaptec 29160
and continue to use my old peripherals. Since an
Adaptec 29160 and a SCSI-3 to SCSI-2 adapter
runs about $179+$23=$201, purchasing a new USB
scanner would cost roughly the same.

What do you think I should do?

I'm leaning towards dumping all my SCSI devices.
I've been looking at the tech specs for USB
and it appears to be more promising than SCSI,
even though with USB 2.0 you only get 60MB/sec instead
of 160MB/sec with SCSI-3.

My only problem is that once I decide to dump
SCSI, I'll have a perfectly good Exabyte 8200
drive and an HP Scanjet 3c I'll have to get rid of.
Will anyone still want one of those? I'd hate to
just throw them away. They both still work fine.

Is there any reason I should stay with SCSI?
If I want to build a RAID system or high
performance NFS file server later on,
can I do that with IDE or USB or is SCSI the
only way to go?

Has Anyone succeed in the setup of the XWindows
in the Compaq Presario 1400 Laptop???

I'm not able to make it work.

Hi,

I installed a Plexwriter as a ide-scsi device, and Xcdroast can burn cds
with it.
The problem is, I can't mount any data-CDs with it.
Is that normal?

The error message I get is:

/dev/scd0 has a wrong major or minor device number.

My DVD-ROM device is /dev/scd1 and it can mount w/o problems.

My /etc/fstab looks like this.

/dev/hda1 /C vfat noauto,user 0 0
/dev/hda5 /D vfat user 0 0
/dev/hda6 /boot ext2 defaults 1 2
/dev/hda7 swap swap defaults 0 2
/dev/hda8 / ext2 defaults 1 1
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
usbdevfs /proc/bus/usb usbdevfs defaults 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0
/dev/scd0 /cdrom auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0
/dev/scd1 /dvd auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0
/dev/fd0 /floppy auto noauto,user 0 0

When I change 'auto' to 'iso9660' for the /dev/scd0, then I get the
followig error message (translating from german).
mount: Falscher Dateisystemtyp oder ungltige Optionen.
Mglicherweise ist auch der 'Superblock' von /dev/scd0 beschdigt,
oder es sind zu viele Dateisysteme gemountet.

--> mount: Wrong filesystem type or illegal options.
Possibly the 'superblock' of /dev/scd0 damaged, or there are too
many mounted filesystems.

Am I doing a dramatic mistake or what?

It does. When I manage to get my hard disks up to 6MB/s, I get 9MB/s
on the array. I consider that a reasonable figure.

> However, are you using hdparm as a benchmark? This program is supposed

It doesn't work on md disks. It says something like "open() error:
Success."

That's close to what I did. The hdparm stuff was related purely to
the individual (IDE) devices, not to the md device.

> Please note that this kind of benchmarks might give different results

Just use /dev/md0 instead of /path/to/test_file. Might cause
different results depending on the disk geometry, but good enough.

You need a hub or switch and two network cards in the Linux computer.
That's it.

That's a growing question. The latest rumors are that Plextor will not do
its 16X burner in SCSI and IF true then the likely marks the beginning of
the end for SCSI on single user workstations.

CD-RW drives are great for archiving selected files, but nor for
making system backups on a regular basis.

Still, the quality of the 3C's scans is probably better than that of a
lot of newer 1200dpi scanners. Besides, not too many people regularly
scan at 600dpi or higher...

I often end up at this same crossroads and even for
large RAID machines, it seems that while SCSI is great
in theory, it's too expensive. I'm not clear on why
you don't keep your existing SCSI setup.

You can build software RAIDs with IDE, in fact there are even
hardware RAID cards (for example, rpmfind.net is running on a
3ware IDE RAID). I've evaluated SCSI vs IDE for RAIDs, and while
SCSI would be nice, the cost per storage unit i way too much. For
example, a SCSI machine will not only cost more than the IDE
alternative, it will have about half the storage capacity.

I got one of the early Adaptec 2940's and it
apparently has a really old BIOS chip. I tried
it in a Dell Dimension L700cx and it won't
boot. Do you have an Adaptec 2940 that works
on a fast system (700Mhz or higher)?
Maybe I'll try fiddling with the parameters
on the card.

What's wrong with making system backups on CD-RW
disks? It's a lot faster than my 2GB Exabyte 8200
tape drive. Plus I can use compression on a CD-RW
disk because once the data is written it won't
corrupt as easily as a tape can.

Why would my old 3c be better than an Epson Perfection 1240U?
The Epson Perfection 1240U is spec'ed at 1200x2400dpi 42 bit.
That sounds a lot better than my HP ScanJet 3c.
I'm hoping the colors will be better.

I doubt Plextor will stop
the rumor is spreading quickly-, but it seems that it is more a lack of
components on the market than anything else
here is a copy of the message I received from plextor:
"Hello,
I honestly have no idea how these rumors get started, but let me say
categorically that what you heard from whom and when is completely without
justification. Plextor remains as committed to its SCSI product offerings as
much as it is to E-IDE (ATAPI). Even though the market potential for SCSI
devices is less than ten (10%) percent of the overall market, it is still a
niche that Plextor can support quite comfortably. Like yourself, there are
hundreds of thousands of other Plextor customers that share your viewpoint
and we are very sensitive to meeting the future needs of this large
installed base.

Subject: ethernet card problem
Date: Fri, 16 Feb 2001 12:48:08 -0000

Hi there,

A networking/ethernet card config problem:

I have installed Mandrake on a machine which has what Windows called a
"3Com Etherlink 10/100 PCI for Complete Pc Management NIC (3C905C-TX)."
However, on startup Linux identifies it as "3Com 3c905C Tornado" and gives
the error "***INVALID CHECKSUM 002f***".
It identifies the card as being at 0xd800 with IRQ 10, which is what Windows
thought too.
The driver installed is 3c59x.c and the card is installed (term?) as eth0.

When I try to use dhcpc to configure networking, it times out. I take it
this is due to the ethernet card not working - is this correct?
If so, what do I need to do to get it working? Bear in mind that I don't
know anything about Linux - for example, which files control the
configuration of the card.

Is there a HOWTO/troubleshooting guide for this type of thing?

 Thanks.

I do not agree, I'm using the Adaptec 2940 in a Pentium III
800Mhz connected to a CD-ROM, CD-RW, a Zip 250 and
an HP Scanjet 3c, all working perfectly. BTW until recently
I used to hang two SCSI2 drives from the same card, I since

Why do you think it wont work?, is it not supported in Linux?.

Also don't give up the Scanjet 3c, it's a great scanner (one
of the VERY few things that HP managed to do well).

they have a driver ( source and compiled module ) specifically for that card.
