The Rage Fury Xpert2000 is not yet supported with Red Hat 6.2, Does this
mean there is no point in installing Linux?

If you're using RedHat install the anon-ftp rpm.

Was the website thing your only symptom? Theoretically 1492 is correct
MTU for PPPoE/A. But -- I believe this has to be set at, or lower than
any router in your destination's path. I would think somewhere someone
along the way has a wrong MTU value set. But, you have to do what you

Report from the field. The Apple 17" monitor works fine with Linux if
you have the right graphics card. My Stealth Diamond III did not work
at all with the monitor. But the ATI Rage Xpert 128 card is working
great. Both cards are PCI. Apple has no comment on this, and was no
help. But, they did tell me that they ATI Rage cards in the G3/4
machines. The plug and play code from Redhat 6.2 got the configuration
just right.

According to RMS, "Linux" refers to the kernel only, and RedHat is most
certainly not Linux--it's a subset. If you mean "I am using the RedHat
6.0 distribution," please say so, as it will reduce confusion and allow
people to help you more quickly.

"rebuild" meaning "hardware rebuild"? Hmm. Check the cabling and
termination, make sure no 2 devices are trying to share the same SCSI
ID. Take a look at the output of "dmesg" and see if any SCSI devices
are detected at boot time. Make sure cdrecord is SUID root, or you're
running it as root. Make sure that /dev/sg[0-7] exist. Make sure SCSI
support is enabled somewhere--"lsmod" should probably show a number of
SCSI modules as being loaded, including scsi_mod, sr_mod, and sg. If
they're not there, modprobe them.
The error message you listed doesn't give much info--cdrecord spits out
that error a lot when it finds something that's misconfigured. Have you
looked at http://linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/CD-Writing-HOWTO.html ? Do so if
you haven't yet. Posting more info about your kernel version, SCSI host
adapter, and version of cdrecord may also help. Good luck....

Subject: Need help designing system
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Mike)
Date: Fri, 04 Aug 2000 04:48:38 GMT
I will be building a new computer system for myself.
I want it to be on the higher end with the ability to run Linux a top priority
(however I will need to boot into Win98 for games, Outlook, and Quicken - as
well as keeping the ability to assist people with their Win problems as a
consultant).
I understand some of the features won't work quite right (and I would like to
know about them) but here is what I have in mind:
Motherboard:
ABIT:SE6, I815E CHIPSET, SOCKET 370, FLIP CHIP, 6PCI, AGP, CNR, 3DIMM, UDMA
100, AUDIO, VIDEO, RETAIL BOX
CPU:
INTEL:P-III 667 PPGA, 133MHZ BUS, 256K L2 CACHE, SOCKET 370, FLIP CHIP, OEM,
Memory:
MICRON:128MB-P133, 7.5NS, GOLD CONTACT, UNBUFFERRED, CAS 3, LIFETIME WARRANTY
Hard Drive:
IBM:07N3929, 30.7GB EIDE UDMA 100, 7200 RPM, DESKSTAR, 75GXP LP, DTLA-307030,
OEM.
I was not able to find a system like this, or components, on linhardware - are
there any other sites that validate Linux hardware ?
Some questions:
1) Will it work with Linux (I use Red Hat 6.2 currently because that is what we
use at the office) ?
2) What features will work and which one's won't under Linux ?
3) If a feature won't work (say I have to use ATA33 under Linux) is that
something I have to change once and leave it that way ? or can I run it at full
speed under my Win systems and then just have it step down for Linux ?
4) Suggestions for case ? I had been looking at at an Enlite but have seen some
poor reviews lately about air circulation have me concerned. Really what I
would like is a case that is as easy to open and work on as the Mac G4 :)
5) I am thinking about a Soundblaster Live sound card. However there seem to
be lots of versions - will they all work under Linux ?
6) Video card - I use a Diamond 32MB (TNT2) with Linux at work but since we
bought that in Jan there is likely something better now (right ?) - I need it
to be fast and TOTALLY compatible in both Win98 and Linux. (budget <$150 for
video).

For that card check in
/usr/src/linux-2.2.16/Documentation/networking/sis900.txt
I have that card but haven't tried to use it since my previous
setup (with 2.0.38 kernel). When the driver was loaded there seemed to
be a video conflict in that things slowed down. I didn't try X
but when I tried to run some svgalib stuff I either got jerky motion
or a totally black screen and loss of keyboard.
>From what I can tell you can't change any settings, seems the IRQ and
I/O address are hardset. In my case the address seemed a wee bit too
close to the video memory.
I now have kernel 2.2.16 but I opted to put in my ISA NIC instead
just because.
Check /proc/pci just to see where things are.

Yeah, you'll just have to recompile a kernel with support for 815,
although I think the RH's have that already.
>
> 2) What features will work and which one's won't under Linux ?
Real UDMA-100 won't work to 100%, although you get exactly the same
measurments as in Windows, it will be a little slower due to a
difference in the kernel speaking to the devices (marginally)

You won't have to change anything. It simply won't work in Linux. (let's
say you fail to get sound card drivers, you simply leave the card in and
use Linux withouth!)

AOPEN's newest cases are GREAT! Get a big one, as it's always practical
if you want to tinker with it a bit.

Uhmm... yeah well.. live.. Emu10K is there, but it's a bit fluffy. Get a
128PCI, no body needs live.

GeForce (from 256 SDR to 2 GTS, doesn't matter, only the price changes,
compatibility not..) is your only option if you want something fast.
Then you'll updgrade to XFree 4.0.1 and get NVidia's latest drivers.
These make GL only 5% slower than Windows.

I have the same problem. Everything slows down, even the mouse! After some
investigations, I find that I have the same problem when writing big files to hard
disk (no access to the CD RW). Nearly all the CPU is consumed in SYS mode. I have
no solution for this. I am actually using Mandrake 7.0 on a PIII 500.

For datavisualisation with net interface look for example at
http://www.iaee.tuwien.ac.at/sensor/samplin/
The Program is called SampLin by Mr. Kvasnica;
its a a kind of script language combined with a nice and very easy to
use real time graphic. We are using it for 1,5 years in a linux based
rheometer for the online display of torque , speed, temperature, time
and
status signals
