Hi,
Just built 2.2.14 from the sources on top of a RH 5.2 distribution. It
works
except for a few minor glitches. Not exactly the smoothest trip going,
but
I think I made it unscathed...
One that I can't figure out is gpm triggering a '... used obsolete
/dev/cua0 -
update software to use /dev/ttyS0' from kernel source file tty_io.c
Well, I did "update" gpm (downloaded and installed v.1.14 - Im not
convinced
it's any different from what was already there), and the source code
definitely uses ttyS0 explicitly. The error message comes from
tty_open() in
tty_io when .type is TTY_DRIVER_TYPE_SERIAL and .subtype is SERIAL_TYPE_
CALLOUT; tty_io.c is set to generate this message 5 times and then shut
up.
I finally figured out why - gpm uses /dev/mouse by default, which was
a link to /dev/cua0 under RH 5.2. A "ln -s /dev/ttys0 /dev/mouse" fixed
it. But, can anyone give me a little more insight as to what this
message
means, if anything else is affected, why this change was made etc.?
Also noted a few other oddities while I was doing this. If anyone is
trying
something similar and has any questions, feel free; I may have run up
against it.
Tomorrow I may update my glibc if I feel like causing myself some more
grief
:)
Thanks in advance,
Larry

Separate serial port devices for different behaviours is gone. One device
can perform all serial port behaviours when properly configured. This is
a change to finally clean up the leftovers from when different devices
we needed. Just use ttyS0, ttyS1, etc, and be happy.

I **always** install new systems from scratch. Leftovers from upgrades
can sometimes make a real mess. Other times, they may make things work
that, say due to a hard drive failure, won't work when you do have to
re-install from scratch. By doing at first what you would do again later,
you can improve your odds at reproducibility.

Be sure your rescue disk is handy.

Hallo,

Hmm, that sounds like a possible memory problem.
I have a 466 but currently no drives to hook up to it and test.
What MegaRAID firmware does your card contain? If it is not the latest
then you may want to try flashing to the latest firmware.
The latest is GH6D.
You may also want to get the latest MegaRAID driver. www.ami.com has
copies and I think they're up to 1.04 Oops - scratch that, it's 1.07 on
their web site. You may want to try compiling a new Kernel with the 1.07
driver.

Hello
Boot from a bootdisk.
at the dosprompt type
dir /a:h /s
to find the hidden files
type
attrib -r -s -h *.*
del *.imx
del *.fil
del *.idx
Also you must uninstall the windows swapfile.
rerun defrag
rerun fips

Subject: port stubbornly refusing to accept the proper irq
Date: Mon, 28 Feb 2000 11:45:48 GMT
Stockholm 2000-02-28
Dear Linux Hardware community.
I find it difficult to set the correct IRQ for up an internal US
Robotics
modem for Linux. My distribution is Slackware. In the hardware i have
put
the irq jumper in place for irq 5. It works correctly on COM 3 and IRQ 5
with Netscape under Window$ 3.11 with the M$ dialer my internet provider
proscribes.
My distribution is Slackware 4.0. In /etc/rc.d/rc.serial I have
commented
out line 47
# These are the standard COM1 through COM4 devices
#
# If you have an internal modeme with a Rockwell Chipset, add a
"skip_test"
# to the /dev/ttyS3 line below. (It's not added by default because it
will
# screw up people with 8514 displays).
#
${SETSERIAL} /dev/ttyS0 ${AUTO_IRQ} skip_test autoconfig ${STD_FLAGS}
${SETSERIAL} /dev/ttyS1 ${AUTO_IRQ} skip_test autoconfig ${STD_FLAGS}
#${SETSERIAL} /dev/ttyS2 ${AUTO_IRQ} skip_test autoconfig ${STD_FLAGS}
${SETSERIAL} /dev/ttyS3 ${AUTO_IRQ} autoconfig ${STD_FLAGS}
and uncommented line 154 and in it changed the irq to 5
# These are the standard COM1 through COM4 devices
#
#${SETSERIAL} /dev/ttyS0 uart 16450 port 0x3F8 irq 4 ${STD_FLAGS}
#${SETSERIAL} /dev/ttyS1 uart 16450 port 0x2F8 irq 3 ${STD_FLAGS}
${SETSERIAL} /dev/ttyS2 uart 16450 port 0x3E8 irq 5 ${STD_FLAGS}
#${SETSERIAL} /dev/ttyS3 uart 16450 port 0x2E8 irq 3 ${STD_FLAGS}.
setserial /dev/ttyS2
still yields
UART:16550A, PORT:0X03e8, IRQ:4.
Because in man setserial it is claimed "setserial is a program
designed to set and/or report the configuration information associated
with a serial port." I tried to set /dev/ttyS2 to irq 5 by
setserial /dev/ttyS2 irq_5 and got
Invalid flag: irq_5
and by
setserial /dev/ttyS2 port_0x03e8 irq_5 and got
Invalid flag: port_0x03e8
and it seem that I cant use setserial to force my stupid port 0x03e8
to accept 5 as its irq.
>From this I conclude that I must have overlooked something in the
Modem-HOWTO or in man setserial. Would you please tell me how I can
force my disobedient port to accept the irq I decide for it.

Hi,
Can anyone tell me from practical experience if Linux (2.2 kernel) makes
effective use of 4 CPU machines, or point me to some useful benchmarks that
have been done to test this?
And does anyone have good experiences of Linux running on Dell SMP machines?
(I'm based in Europe where the specialist Linux vendors such as VALinux and
PenguinComputing don't seem to be operating.)
I need to buy some hardware to do some fairly-intensive Web serving (dynamic
web pages, with an Oracle database), and if possible I'd like to run it all
on one machine to minimise the adminstration.
Any help really appreciated.

True, but IIRC BIOS companies like Award (which has been bought by
Phoenix btw) deliver something like a standardized BIOS that has to be
adapted to a specific hardware on a motherboard. So it's TYAN's duty to
make sure the powerdown cycle is implemented properly. On the S1590S
this is not the case. The specs call for real mode before powerdown.
TYAN's BIOS doesn't do this, that's why there is a real mode patch for
Linux. Other MoBo manufacturers have provided updated BIOS's to correct
this problem.
TYAN doesn't care about this, they don't care to answer emails regarding
this issue, hence I don't care to buy TYAN products in the future.
I prefer Linux-aware and customer-oriented companies.

Hi,
I recommend that you check "http://www.mostang.com/sane/"
to be sure there is a driver for your scanner. I just (yesterday)
installed a scanner myself, and it were painless. Since there are
lots of HP drivers , I bought a HP Scanjet 6300C. I downloaded
the sane driver, compiled and tested -- and it worked immediately.

The drivers for ZIPs in kernels <= 2.2.5 were a little flaky. If you're
running kernel 2.2.5 at home, upgrade and things will go much better. I
ran afoul of this a while back, but never lost anything important... oddly
enough, Linux always liked the ZIP disk just fine; WinNT didn't like it
though...

That kind of reminds me of some of the customers that my company deals with daily. We
are
mainly a business oriented networking solutions company. We also sell complete
workstations to those that need them. Many people expect us to keep our prices in line
with Gateway and Dell. Which of course we don't. there wouldnt be any point in
trying to
do that. We can service what we sell, and we dont suggest a reload everytime their
system
has a hiccup.
One such person (a gateway customer) was having a terrible time getting a system to
run.
Gateway kept putting him off, suggesting he do a system restore etc. Finally, this
person
ended up sending the system back. A month after all his problems began, he finally
had a
new replacement system on his desk. One that actually ran. And after all this he was
just ranting and raving about how great GW's tech support was! Those are the same
people
that rant and rave about how MS is 'supported'. If thats what I have to go through to
get
support, Ill take Linux.

Hi!
Actually - you don't need to write such utility for Linux - here is more
elegant way -
test how far you can overclock you TNT (under windows), remember core/memory
clocks.
Use VERY COOL program "TNT Bios Editor" (get it from
http://www.chat.ru/~vicovico/) and flash these new setting into the bios of
your videocard!
That is - no need to use any stupid overclocking programs,
Works under any O/S and so on.
BTW,
Why do you want to overclock you card under Linux?
I mean - for what reason? - Currently available X Servers with HW
Acceleration are to slow (due to their nature - beta status - and weak HW
Acceleration support in Xfree 86 3.xxxx - no DIRECT rendering
infrastructure) and overclocking will not help a lot. Better wait for XFree
86 4.0 release (or Nvidia+SGI own release of RECENTLY-PROMISED HW
Accelerated X Server).
And 2D works fine without any overclocking :-)))
It's just a question :-)) Mine card is overclocked (via bios) in Linux also
:-))))
