I have to wonder what sort of performance an NT system emulating

Subject: Epson stc600 monochrome printing?
Date: 5 Feb 1999 15:21:54 GMT
Hi,
I've got my Epson Stylus Colour 600 working in Linux (Redhat 5.1) using the
ghostscript 5.5 uniprint driver (with stc600pl.upp driver) and colour printouts
look great. However, as most of my printing will just be black and white, I
want to be able to use the black ink cartridge instead of the colour+black
cartridge. Does anyone know how to do this? I know there are various options
for ghostscript like "-dupColorModel=/DeviceGray" but I'm not sure whether this
forces the printer to use the black ink cartridge only. I'm hoping that some simple
changes to the stc600pl.upp file may be all that is required.
As a side question, is there any chance that anyone has a Linux program which
can report the ink levels for the Epson Stylus printers as the MS Windows drivers can?

Have a look at the SANE documentation:

They say that the scsi controller shipped with UMAX scanners are not
supported by Linux.

The Mwave card will probably not work in linux - unless you initalize it in
windows and then load linux with loadlin. Even then, I had problems with it.

Try http://glide.xxedgexx.com/status.html or
http://www.uno.edu/~adamico/banshee/Welcome.html
I got it to work using the FBDev X server. I had to upgrade to kernel
2.2.1 first as 1.1.122 locked up in 24bit colour mode. (24bit colour
is not supported under X 3.3.2 anyway as I discovered)
It works fine, but refresh rate is 60Hz only. - Anyone know how to
change this?
It is also very slow as none of the banshee 2D acceleration features are
supported.
For installation instructions, try
http://www.uno.edu/~adamico/banshee/Welcome.html
Daryll Strauss is also developing a Banshee X server. You can check his
progress at http://glide.xxedgexx.com/status.html

Date: Fri, 05 Feb 1999 10:26:52 +0100
Hello,
Question:
What is, at this moment, the best disk interface, to use under Linux.
Is the main advantage of SCSI still the fact that is utilizes the
processor much less then IDE does ? Is this advantage only theoretical
with todays fast systems, or does it make a big difference ?
Looking at throughput speed, the "theoretical" speed of IDE, 33 Mb/s
wins from the U-SCSI, 10 Mb/s ? and UW-SCSI 20 Mb/s ?
The pricing of IDE equipment certainly beats the SCSI stuff.
In other words, is it still a smart thing to stick with SCSI under
Linux, or can I just as well step over to IDE ? And Why ?
thanks in advance
Remco

I'm also using a K6-2 300 (overclocked to 100x3.5) and 128mb of PC100 RAM in
Linux just fine.
This is on an Asus P5a motherboard (Alladin V chipset I think).
As for the TX chipset, it can't cache more than 64mb of RAM.

I assume that hda1 is your win/dos partition?
If that is the case then mount the partition using the -t vfat option. That
will preserve long filenames.
See the man pages for mount for more detailed info.

The problem is that the newer cards aren't properly supported with the 2940
driver. It seems that the ability to handle multiple commands per device is
very sketchy under Linux. Put a lot of activity on the card and it chokes
due to SCSI timeout errors. A very fast CPU will flood the controller with
I/O commands, and it just dies.
You can alleviate the problem by going into the SCSI BIOS and select NO to
the Enable Disconnect option on all of the SCSI IDs supported by the board.
The problems will disappear after you have made these changes. Older
revisions of the 2940s do not have this problem. If the CPU is slow enough,
the problem will not manifest itself either.

If you're using System Commander to choose your OS...don't install LILO in the
MBR...it needs to be installed at the front of the Linux partition. You can
edit lilo.conf and re-run lilo. Should work for you.

Assuming you don't have to patch anything, etc. to go from src rpm to
installation, do:
rpm --rebuild <source>.rpm
rpm -Uvh /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386/<binary>.rpm
^

\-- might be noarch, ppc, etc.
Also, if you look in the rpm man page, it will tell you more about the various

We use 3c905B's the whole time without any problems (except that
autonegotiation dosen't work, but that's another story). The driver was
integrated into the mainstream kernel in the latter part of last year, I
believe. Get 2.0.36 and compile it.
As for the video card - unless you have loads of spare time on your hands
spend a few $ and replace it with a supported one. You probably won't get
your moneys' worth if you spend more than a 4Mb Matrox Millenium II anyhow.
