When you see only the L of LILO, that means that it hangs at a special stage
and the 04 is an error code. From the Bootdisk-HOWTO, Section 12. LILO boot
error codes:

L

The first stage boot loader has been loaded and started, but it can't load
the second stage boot loader. The two-digit error codes indicate the type of
problem. (See also section ``Disk error codes''.) This condition usually
indicates a media failure or a geometry mismatch (e.g. bad disk parameters)


The section "Disk error codes" seems not to be in the Bootdisk-HOWTO,
because this text was copied from the lilo documentation. You can get it
from:
ftp://lrcftp.epfl.ch/pub/linux/local/lilo/lilo-u-21.ps.gz or
http://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/boot/lilo/lilo-u-21.ps.gz

Most likely, you already have it in your /usr/doc directory or somewhere. I
can not look into it at the moment because I don't have a postscript viewer
here at work. So download it yourself and look up the error codes you get.

Sorry for the repost, but I got no responses and I would really like
to know whether this problem is a hardware failure or a driver 
failure. Thanks for any comment. Next is the original message:


I've been experiencing some strange behavior from my creative DVD-ROM 
drive. I wasn't able to read some CDs _sometimes_, and I also noticed
some malfunction when trying to extract audio from audio CDs. All these
was caused by using the ATAPI cdrom driver in kernel 2.2.7.

Then I switched to using the SCSI emulation, generic SCSI driver and
SCSI cdrom driver instead, and suddenly all this odd behavior seemed to
disappear. It started working ok, both with data and audio, but then 
again I noticed strange stuff.

Some times during boot-up I see these messages:

scsi0 : SCSI host adapter emulation for IDE ATAPI devices

Everytime I see these "The scsi wants to send us more data than expected.."
messages, it won't work ok. It will read CDs sometimes and do some other 
funny stuff. But if I don't see that messages during bootup, my feeling is 
that it works 100% ok.

I copy&paste here some of the error messages logged in /var/log/messages in 
case they can help determine whether it's a hardware error or a driver error.
BTW, I tried to use a 2.0.36 kernel in case the error was in the 2.2.7 
drivers, but it behaved the same.

Does this give any hint to anyone?  Should I claim the dvd drive is not

Hi,

be sure to enable probe all LUN on the scsi controller. This is an
kernel option. I think when using redhat this option is not enbaled by
default. Be sure to look as well in the readme file that comes with AMI
Megaraid drivers, that can be download form the www.ami.com.

with this product under Linux.  I know Linksys

other than windows.

Any help/experience/advice for more info, would be

Hmm, but initial latency is about 4 times lower. And consider this: It's L2
cache not L1 so it serves data only in 256bit packs at once.
So look at this example:
Program requests 3 data words from 3 consequtive cache lines:
on Cumine timing is something like this:
8-0-0-0-2-0-0-0-2-0-0-0
 so 12 cycles total, 8 to the 1st critical word, 10 to the 2nd and 12 to the
3rd;
on Katmai timing is like the following:
24-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1
 so 35 cycles total, 24 to the 1st critical word, 28 to the 2nd and 32 to
the 3rd.
There is no point when Katmai latency is better: 1st word is 4 times worse,
the last is 2.5 times worse and even differences between consequtive words
are 2 times (4 cycles instead of 2 cycles) worse.

I am trying to configure X-windows on my SMART-TEC laptop, but get some
problems.
The problem is that the X-env. shows VERY LARGE ICONS when I  startX.
Conclusion: the resolution is to small.

Here are some hard-and software specifications:
Redhad Linux version 6.1 installed on a Smart-tec notebook (ver. SOCKET 7 -
NX-6000).
- Integrated 32-bit PCI local bus video with 4Mb video SGRAM,
- the display of this computer is based on PCI local bus (ver. SOCKET 7) and
AGP architecture for high video performance.

Under NT the display type is NeoMagic MagicMedia256ZX in 1024x768 and 60Hz
refresh rate.

Nah, those super xxx drives tend to do that.  Take it back.  I lost 2 of
those 48x memorex drives in mid-installs.  The first one decided it was
an 8x drive only, but kept on working for a few days, the 2nd just fell
over.  The third ones working fine, and both were over the counter
warranty replaced at Staples plus I got a refund as they'd gone down 10
bucks by the time the second one failed.  Neat!

AFAIK, lilo append lines work for drivers that are compiled into the
kernel itself.  If you want to use options with modules you have to do
it with /etc/conf.modules.
