I've been getting this same error on my Ricoh 6200A (IDE/ATAPI).

Subject: Problems configuring soundcard
Date: Sat, 19 Aug 2000 23:38:56 GMT

Hi,
I just installed Mandrake 7.1 and I am having some problems
configuring sound for my
Soundblaster 16 - Vibra 16 card. Under Hardrake (v0.5.3) it shows the
following info for the
card :

Vendor : Creative Labs
Model : ViBRA16X
MPU01 : Yes
OPL3 : Yes
DMA2/16 : Yes

I then click on Run Configuration :

Settings are :

I/O : 220
IRQ: 7
DMA8 : 0
DMA16/2 : 5
MPU401 I/O : 330

I Click on test and Linux talks to me !!! Everything seems fine. I then
tried playing an audio
CD !!! It worked ! However I cannot play system sounds, mp3, wav, au,
etc .... I cannot under because
The test works fine and I hear the wav of Linus's voice but nothing
else except for audio CD's.

if i do cat /dev/sndstat there is not much in the file but it tells me
that the Driver is loaded as a
module. Here is more info from that file :

Kernel is 2.2.15-4mdk
Audio Devices:
0: Sound Blaster 16 <4.16> <DUPLEX>

That's about it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated !

Thanks,

I actually solved the problem by running sndconfig to configure
instead of the hardmandrake tool.

Thanks

Folks,

I am in the progress of putting together a RH6.2 machine and would
like to get some suggestions on the selection of a video card. I have a
19" monitor and am currently using an ATI All-In-Wonder 128 @1152x864
resolution under Win98. Here is what I have in mind: the card does not
have to be fancy, and 8MB or 16MB RAM is fine for me. I love to have
the capability to watch TV under Linux, but that is not a must. I would
like to maintain the ability to display the video at the same, or
better, resolution as my Win98 machine (either 1152x864 or even
1280x1024).
At this point I am considering a card from ATI, such as the XPERT
128 16MB AGP which is selling for $77 at Buy.com. Then I could add the
ATI TV-Wonder later on. Is the XPERT 128 a good choice? How good do
ATI cards work in Linux? Do I need specific video drivers, or can I use
a generic one? Do you have any other recommendations that would be
better and/or cheaper? Thanks.

A quick browse at <http://www.pricewatch.com/> shows up a few vendors
offering Optra 40's for between $150 and $200; I think the "fire sale"
was pretty effective...

I'm kicking myself somewhat that I didn't get one when I saw them at
buy.com. [Mind you, I didn't _really_ need it, which is why I'm not
kicking terribly hard...]

Around the first of the year I started really checking into
that. I have a 605. Another 605 user and I corresponded and talked
about collaborating on writing a driver. Neither one of us could find
any specs on the card. Cicso won't help us because we didn't purchase
the card from them. US West won't talk to us because they don't
support Linux.
In short, it would seem we're all SOL as far as Linux is
concerned.

I ultimately bought a Brother HL-1270N, for $500, and I like alot it so
far. It was really quick to set up the network printing under Linux,
though I did first change the IP address of the printer using Brother's
included Win98 software (you apparently also can do it directly under
Linux). Brother's "Network User's Guide", which comes on the included
CD (which I guess requires Win or Mac to read), devotes a great deal of
attention to Unix and Linux issues: Chapter 1 is entitled "How to
Configure TCP/IP printing for Unix Systems". Overall, I am very pleased
-- this is probably the cheapest laser printer with a built-in ethernet
port and it has very Linux-friendly documentation.

Both XFree86 4.0, and 3.3.6 are in M 7.1. I believe to use 4.0 you have to do
an expert install.

Does anyone know what I need to do to make this tape drive work??

I am using Mandrake 7.1 and run /sbin/modprobe zft-compressor. Then
I try to use taper. I get input/output errors when I try to run a
backup.

I have read the How-to's and man pages for ftape, mt and taper and am
still in the dark.

Any help would be appreciated.
