My mouse never seemed to do this before, but now after
I start X and then go back to the console, my mouse is
forever stuck in the upper right-hand corner and when
I move my mouseball (it's a trackball), it does funky
stuff to the screen like copying, pasting, entering
carriage returns, etc.
The mouse works fine in X, and it works fine in the
console until I start X for the first time. I'm assuming
my X config must be screwing up gpm somehow, but I'm not
sure what's going on.
Could someone give me a couple tips?
Thanks in advance,

This is known as "packet writing" and is not really supported yet.
Packet-written discs are in the UDF filesystem format, and support for
that filesystem is still experimental, requiring a kernel patch and
possibly not working correctly in all cases. cdrecord has another
experimental option to start up its packet-writing code, but remember that
it might thwack all your data.
I don't know why packet-writing support for lInux is lagging so far
behind, but that's the way it is. Use mkisofs/cdrecord and multisession
support, it works every time....

It really depends on the load on your website. The Nameserver and Mailserver
are relatively light loads.
We use AMD processors for our servers, but they only handle small intranets.
I built one Pentium II server using the Aopen AX6B+ MB, and was quite
pleased with the results. It will also support the Pentium III. The board
costs about $300.00 Cdn - about $200US
Look for memory slots. We have found that memory is as important and in some
cases, more important than processor speed.

This card is specifically NOT supported by the manufacturer (Sigma
Designs), they stated they will never release drivers for Linux because
of the DVD controversy. For more info, go to the newsgroup

I don't know if this is a related problem or not, but occationally when
I switch from the console to X my ps2 intellimouse (the MS-mouse with
the scroll-wheel) cursor gets stuck in the upper-right hand corner of my
screen, but all I have to do is move the scroll wheel back and forth and
then it starts working fine...
good luck

I am using same chipset and distribution as you are on my machine at work.
Support for the Trio 3D is fairly new and little flaky. Not ALL resolutions and
color depths that the chipset supports will work. I kept playing with the
configuration and got it to work with 1152x864 16 bit color. Some other
resolutions also work.

Did you use this drive under Windows, and if so, can Windows
still use it? If possible, leave it running under Windows for
awhile. If it works OK there, you may have compiled something
wierd into your kernel.
What exactly did you compile in your new kernel? I may not be
able to help just by looking at it, but someone here can.
Regardless, I'd be backing up my data (just in case).

Hello all,
I am trying to install Red Hat 6.1 via FTP onto 2 486 machines with no CD
rom. I am using a WIn 98 machine as the ftp server . All three machines
are networked via a 10baseT ethernet network. I am using generic Network
cards. I am able to boot into the linux setup however when it asks for the
driver I select "NE1000, NE2000, and compatible" and hit "OK". I then get
an error saying:
/tmp/ne.o: init_module: Device or resource busy.
I get this error on both machines.
I also tried using the Linux driver disk that came with the NIC but when I
try to use the disk I get an error saying "Could not mount floppy disk."
Does anyone have any ideas or help??
Thanks in advance. Feel free to contact me by email or ICQ.

The optical mice we had on the old Xerox 11XX boxes were superb, and
the mousemat was just a piece of patterned cardboard which you could
(this was Xerox, after all) simply photocopy. So the practice was get
a new mousemat, photocopy it, stick the original at the back of the
filing cabinet, and use the photocopy until you'd spilled so much
coffee and other muck on it that it was unusable, and then go and
photocopy another.
The mice themselves were solidly made, comfortable in the hand, had
nice, big buttons, and just worked - I didn't get interested in mouse
quality until I moved onto things like Suns and PCs with inferior
mice. But a good optical mouse beats a good mechanical mouse any day.

Subject: Problem with AH2940 after processor upgrade
Date: Tue, 14 Mar 2000 17:42:28 GMT
Hi.
I've got an Abit BX6 Slot1 motherboard and an adaptec 2940UW SCSI card.
I've upgraded my P-2 300 for a celeron 466 with a PPGA slot1 adaptator.
After the upgrade, linux (v 2.2.14) crashes during the initialization of
the SCSI card (after "downloading sequencer code" it displays another
line and just after that, the screen goes black). I've changed the
processor but the problem remains, so I think it could come from the
slot1-PPGA card. I don't know if it can help, but while win98SE works
just fine, win2K seems to suffer from the same problem as Linux on my
system.

Subject: How to build a parallel port tester?
Date: Tue, 14 Mar 2000 17:30:05 +0200
I need to build a simple tester for finding out
the data on the parallel port of a PC. Currently I have
two BCD 7-segment displays connected to the data outputs
of the port and powered by an external power supply. The
problem is that the OS (Linux) should see the device as
a printer - or have some other means of simple programming
on it. The OS, however, doesn't seem to see anything on
the port. I guess this has something to do (with me being
a sw guy and) with the acknowledges and port status information
of the parallel port. The question is how do I pass this
information from the simple device? Or what is the easiest
way of driving a device through parallel port so that the
software can be written totally in user space, i.e. no
kernel modifications, nor module drivers needed?
Please help me out with this hobby project! I do
know that there is a FAQ for this somewhere but I haven't
yet found it...

gpm -t imps2 and it's been working great ever since!

External modems are the best, but they're more expensive than
internal modems. What I did was surfed Ebay for a bit and found
a nice internal ISA modem with jumpers for only $25! If the
modem has jumpers, then you're set. Otherwise, it's hard to
tell if it's a winmodem, even when it's ISA.

SCSI emulation doesn't work if IDE grabbed the devices first. If you
want both CD-ROMs as SCSI, then you won't need ide-cd - remove this
from the kernel configuration, and then try. You could also load the
SCSI emulation as a module (which is what I do). In this case make
sure you do a 'make modules_install'.

I don't know this model exactly. I have a 820cxi and it is mentioned
(label on the printer "For Windows"). If your printer is "For Windows",
you should try the ppa filter for gs. You will find all recent

I don't think the ^@ is a big deal ... these are just paded in there
for some reason.
Just for fun ... I'd write a small cron script to disable most if not
all of the available services just before midnight ...
Then ... before anyone comes in the office ... have another cron
script go back and restart them.
If this gets you thru the night ... start eliminating them one by one
...
When you find the problem ... look for software upgrades or post a
more detailed question.

It isn't. The proc is at 466 (7x66) and PCI bus speed is half FSB speed.

I compiled with modules using16 bit sound blaster mode at
http://linnix.com/setpnp.html. I use port 220 and auto-detect IRQ.

Look at the modem board. If you can find the audio transformer, then
it's a hardware modem.

by the way installing/booting LinuxPPC Q3 from MacOS with BootX and ben's
kernel is not very tricky on an iBook.
Since you can call BootX very early from MacOS startup, is it really
worth it tweaking forth command lines for hours :-) ?
Things I had to find and found difficult to find:
* you cannot access battery status. The package pmu for other mac laptops
is not ok for iBook
* tapping on the trackpad generates a click. Disable this rapidly if
you dont want to become crazy with
http://www.xs4all.nl/~js/warez/trackpad_tool.tar.gz
* second and third button of X mouse are on option-2 and option-3. Enjoy
* sound card support?

Excellent idea ... I shall do that tomorrow ...
