Do you have an "autodetect" cable, or a Zip Plus drive? If so, you're
SOL, you'll have to get the imm driver. I got it with the Kernel
2.2.1.... *neither* of my Zip drives would work (my Parallel Zip Plus nor
my internal SCSI Zip Drive) until I upgraded my kernel. The SCSI card
that I have, though, is really flaky, and the 2.2.1 support works better
for it, anyway.

I have X running at 1024x768x16bpp using a Diamond Speedstar64 ISA (2MB)
on a 32MB 386DX-40 (one of these days I'll get the money to move up
from this Survival PC). Chipset is Cirrus 5434.

I mentioned the linear addressing thing earlier as that's how I was
able to get 16bpp. Whether or not that's even possible with the 5420
I don't know.

Hi there,

I'm using the SuSe 5.1 distribution CD set. After setting up a
partitioning scheme my first harddisk (containing the part table) is
offline, even the BIOS doesn't recognises it anymore. Is this a possible
mistake of a MBR write action? Or is it just a mere coincedence that my
WD31200 crashed while doing the boot initialisation? Any ideas of how to
revive the harddisk?

Any help is welcomed.

During RedHat 5.2 Linux install, everything goes fine except the
network setup. Whether I use DHCP or a static IP address, it's as if
the card is just not there. It seems to find it OK during the install
process, but upon restart can not get any networking working. DHCP
fails to get an IP address, and it doesn't work with a static mapping
either.

The card is set for IO address of 0x300 and IRQ 10. When I installed
Windows 95 on the machine just to test, it found the card and
networked away with no difficulties.

Help!

Personally, I'd go the SCSI route -- I've got a 486DX100 with a pair of
SCSI drives which does a sterling job as a database development server.
With IDE drives you'd have to get an add-in IDE controller card 'cos the
BIOS isn't going to be happy with multi-gigabyte drives.

Once you get the hardware sorted, Linux will just eat it up of course. You
can still do serious work on a 'low spec' machine.

Hi Robert,

Drive spins up alright, only my BIOS fails to recognize it. I heard something
of a MBR signature. There was something strange, though, just before the
"crash". I changed a singe 1 Gig partition on the drive to two seperate
partitions one for "/" and one for "/usr". When initialising (formatting) the
first partition (/dev/hda7 as a matter of fact) is was only for a blink of an
eye the next partition (/dev/hda8) took a "normal" amount of time. What I
thought was that formatting the first partition somehow corrupted the MBR
and/or Partition table rendering the disk unavailable. Is this possible?

The new XFree86 version 3.3.3 does support the S220, but I had to
use the Xconfigurator to do so, since the regular configuration
utility produced errors when I ran startx. Also remember that the
S220 has to use the XF86_SGVA server. So when you download the
current version of XFree86 be sure to get the Xconfigurator
update. Here's a list of rpm's I grabbed (I hope I got them
all, since I am new to this RPM stuff):

Hi,

when I set up my kernel to turn off the power on shutdown, I get a

Windows95 doesn't have problems with this.

What are the correct settings when compiling the kernel for APM-BIOSes

Thanks, Markus

sorry, my Message was wrong. the ATA specifications proclaim that you can
low-level format any normal (new) EIDE drive. Older ones are damaged by
low-level formatting. So don't low-level drives lower than 500 MB. First ask
your Drive-manufacturer if you can low-level format these ones.

Try http://www.raritan.com/

They specialize in these switches. But be warned... even a two machine
switch box including cables will cost about $700! I use 'em at work.
They're great.

I've used a dos utility called maxllf.exe to low level format in the past
with good results, you'll need to back up your data first, but it works if
you want a clean start, if on the other hand you have bad sectors or
something, get a new hardrive......... save yourself the grief

I had the same problem. As stranger as it may appear, my solution was as follow:

instead of using /dev/mouse in my XF86Config (section mouse ; /dev/mouse is the
link to
/dev/psaux), I just put /dev/psaux ! And it works fine... Strange isn't it ?
