I'm using a Fujitsu 640MB (3.5 inch) MO Drive, but the model
number in your inquiry doesn't sound like that of my SCSI
unit which I think (from memory) is M2513A. It is (was?)
also marketed as a standalone external unit called the
Dynamo 640. Presumably the one in which you're interested
has some other interface.

At least for the SCSI interface, there is no need to find
special drivers. The device is handled by the generic
SCSI driver for hard disks. Presumbably the same may be
true for whatever interface you're considering. The 640MB
media have 2048 bytes per sector, which in very old kernels
was not supported. 2048-byte-per-sector support, at least
for SCSI, was added several revisions ago in the 2.2.x kernel
series, maybe around 2.2.14 or so, but I don't recall exactly.

I haven't done any speed measurements, or comparisons with
other devices. Subjectively I'd guess it's 2 or 3 MB per
second. The device has been very reliable for me. Supposedly
this is the most reliable media you'll ever find. I even
heard anecdotal stories (on the 'Net) that somebody
took some recorded media on a scuba dive and it was
readable (maybe after being washed?) just fine thereafter!

The media are more convenient to handle than CD-RW because
they fit in a shirt pocket (but also more expensive). I
think Fuji has since introduced drives and media with 1.3GB
capacity, but they are difficult to find. If you need
such high capacity, DVD-RAM is probably a better deal.
And for 640MB, CD-RW is a lot cheaper. Therefore I believe
this 3.5 inch MO technology has a cost disadvantage which
is getting squeezed between CD-RW on the low end and
the greater capacity of DVD-RAM on the high end.

Hope this helps.

no.

at boot, Linux reports /dev/ttyS0 and /dev/ttyS1, both with UART 16550A
chips although only one 9-pin serial port exists at the back of the PC.

minicom complains of I/O errors on both /dev/ttySx ports, but is happy to
accept /dev/modem

once minicom starts it says 'initializing modem' as usual, but the TA shows
no sign of activity. Attempting to type anything into minicom's interface
produces no result (the keystrokes are not even echoed to the screen).
Minicom, via the CTRL-key commands, will hang up, reset, initialise and
attempt to dial through the modem without reporting any errors, but nothing
ever happens to the TA and dial attempts obviously just time-out.

I know the port itself is not faulty as my analogue modem works perfectly
well on it just now.

I spoke to BT this morning who supplied the device (although it's
manufactured by a German company - AVM) and they said that they wouldn't
expect it to work unless there was some virtual CAPI modem present on the
OS. This apparently is the case in Windows also, whereby HyperTerminal
would not be able to access the device directly through COM1 or COM2 without
the additional CAPI layer being present. Does this make sense?

Thanks again for the assistance,
DD

It seems that IBM showed in Paris an AS/400 (now rebranded as E-eries), with
4 Power PC 64 bits processors running Kernel 2.4 as a preview for the third
quarter of 2.001 release.

Running 1 OS/400 and 3 LINUX in the same box concurrently

Does any one know how did it performed ? or how was the showing?

Hello; I have an Ericsson T10 mobile phone with the cable to connect to
the serial port, and I'm trying to use it from a Linux box.

Someone know what are the serial port parameters to work with this phone?
And the command set? (I read that it uses the standard AT command set)

Thanks,

Date: Tue, 13 Mar 2001 13:51:48 +0100

Hi All,

I have just installed SuSE 7.1 on my Toshiba Tecra 8000 laptop. It was clean
install - default + office. Kernel 2.4.0. Everithing is working fine except
sound card. Yast2 does not detect my sound card and I tried to configure it
manually but unsuccessfull. Earlier I did installation of SuSE 6.4 and it was
working.

What I did:

Sound card driver: Yamaha OPL3SA2+
Sound card Model: generic Yamaha OPL3SA2
Options:
    Port #: 0x538
    SB port #: 0x220
    WSS port #: 0x530
    FM port #: 0x388
    MIDI port #: 0x330
    IRQ #: 5
    1st DMA #: 1
    2nd DMA #: 0
    ISA PnP detection: 0

Error:
An error occured during installing generic Yamaha OPL3SA2 (Yamaha OPL3SA2+).
The kernel module snd-card-opl3sa2 for sound support could not be loaded.

The same error was if I tried to use OPL3SA3 model.

In Toshiba Hardware Configuration options the card has the following options:
I/O address:
    WSS: 530h
    SBPro: 220h
    Synthesizer: 388h
    Control: 538h
    MPU401: 330h

Interrupt Level: 5
DMA Channel:
    Playback: 1
    Record: 0

What I did wrong?

Thank you,

Thanks for the assistance - I may be back tomorrow asking for help on the

Something in the BIOS....
Check to see if LBA mode and Ultra/ATA mode
etc... is enabled...
Also, some BIOSes have extra hard disk parameters that
need to be set correctly.

Is your card supported by alsa? IIRC SuSE6.4 didn't have alsa but 7.1 uses
it as the default sound driver system. try the oss drivers from the 6.4 CDs
(not the trial one but the older 'free' one).

I just went through a bit of a hassle with a Phillips CDRW/800. It all
works now, but it took a bit. After solving a few small problems with
my configuration I was completely stumped. Everything seemed perfect.
As it turned out it was.

Although the documentation will tell you that your CDR will work at any
speed as long as it is lower than the maximum your drive supports, mine
didn't. My drive will not work with the speed set to the default speed
of 2 nor does it work at the speed suggested if you have problems, zero.
It will work fine if the speed is set to 4 or 8.

One more thing.. nice the process to a high priority just to be safe.

nice -18 cdrecord -vvv dev=0,0 speed=8 myimage.iso

Just a thought. You should try adding -vvv to the command line and
posting the output from cdrecord.
