Subject: --- XFree 4.0 --- with a 3DLabs Oxygen GVX1
Date: Wed, 22 Mar 2000 16:20:36 +0100

Hi all!

I'm trying to install XFree86 4.0 and I get an error when testing the
configuration. So please read the error snippet to help me!

Description:
I have a 3DLabs Oxygen GVX1 with Glint Gamma G1 and Glint R3 processors
onboard. I looked into the graphic cards supported list (
http://www.xfree86.org/4.0/Status3.html ) and it says Gamma is
supported, but what about the Glint R3? As you can see, the Gamma chip
is detected properly (so it seems), however not used... huh? Or does
"used chips: 0" mean that it is using chip #0?

Can anyone answer this^ question?

Even below there's something saying, that there's no framebuffer memory.
Now the question comes up, which of the two chips (Glint Gamma G1 or the
Glint R3) is effectively controlling the framebuffer. The Glint Gamma G1
is a hardware geometry processor (G for geometry), so I'd assume that
one does not control the framebuffer. The other chip, the Glint R3, is
an advanced rendering pipeline processor (R for rendering or
rasterization), so this one must be the chip to control the framebuffer.
It's just an assumption though! Does anyone know???

What might I try to get the GVX1 installed? Nothing at all, because the
rasterizer chip does not appear in the driver list? But what about
predecessors of the 3DLabs professional chipsets?

I have no idea! Otherwise I'll have to plugin my TNT2 and try to
redirect all output to it. But how? NEXT THREAD!

Any help appreciated!!!

Karsten

Hi all!

I couldn't set up an XFree 4.0 X server for my GVX1, but I still have a
TNT2 PCI, which I can plug in in parallel.

1. Is it possible for an already installed Linux base system to redirect
all output to a different graphics card from the beginning of the LINUX
bootup process, that is only when Linux itself kicks in, e.g. after LILO
or Loadlin...

2. Do I have to install Linux again, to use a different graphics card?
Any problems I might encounter? I mean the primary device will always be
the GVX1, because it's the one found first (AGP). No problem at all?

Please share your knowledge/experience with me, or at least make some
assumptions.

Any help appreciated!

I can't seem to be able to setup my ls-120 on Mandrake 7.0 while
supermount is enabled. It works just fine when it is not enabled. I have
it setup as hda, could this be a problem-don't see why it should be.

The module cmpci is loaded

Unfortunately I have no documentation for using this sound card in Linux,
other than the readme on the manufacturer's website. It is rather strange
that I can play music on the command line, but not in X or with ncurses,
although all those other programs are just frontends for mpg123.
An extra observation that might be usefull: the sound i do hear using mpg123
is very silent, unlike when I boot up in Windows.

Thanks in advance for anyone who can help me solve this, 'cause I'd really
like to have some audio in Debian!

Hey guys, forgive me on this basic question, but I am having
trouble setting up my Roland LAPC-1 card in Linux. It is basically a
MT-32 on a ISA card. I read the "Sound How-To" and they mentioned
a MPU-401 driver, which I can't seem to get working either. Also
noticed that Red Hat 6.1 has some MPU-401 drivers already bundled
with it. So I tried "insmod mpu401 -io=0x330 irq=9", but i don't
think that worked either.

I'm fairly new at Linux, but very willing to learn and take things
further. Any step by step stuff or comments/suggestions would
*really* be appreciated. Thanks so much!!

I'm trying to install RedHat 6.1 on a HP OmniBook 5000CTS with a SCSI

Same deal on both boxes--kernel panic when trying to boot from the PCMCIA
boot disk (OmniBook) or the net boot disk (Compaq).

I'm sure this is just an issue of drivers for the SCSI controllers, but
where do I find them and once found, what do I do with them?

Note: the laptop is floppy only, so I'll need to install it across the

OK! Just push the Line 1 button. I don't know what they all do yet,
but the Line 1 button definitely toggles the CD sound. By default it is

Yes. See <http://www.dgmicro.com/mca/default.htm>. You may also need
to apply the patch at
<http://www.deja.com/[ST_rn=ps]/getdoc.xp?AN=541721948&fmt=text> if
you have a 3c523.

I just used the kernel from Debian 2.1 (slink) which has the MCA
patches already applied. And then I just moved to Linux 2.2.

It's usually best to let Linux configure the soundcard itself if possible.

I'd suggest setting all sound options to Module (including sound support) and
run sndconfig. It should detect your soundcard and set it up properly.

...If your card is supported by linux that is! :]

Good luck!

Oh, even so.

Imagine that you have a 1 deep request queue on a 10ms IDE drive.
10 requests takes 90ms, right? So you wait 90ms while you page
10 pages out to swap.

Now imagine a 32 deep 65ms SCSI drive. It handles those 10 requests
immediately (they are ALL queued). Wait = about 0ms.

Hi,

I would like to use my Soundblaster 2.0 under Linux. First I installed
the OSS (opso-3.8) drivers and got sound. But there were disturbing
noises while playing samples. Then I tested the ALSA drivers. After
alsaconf all required kernel modules were loaded, except the SB mixer.
Then I only got noise, but no samples. After that I tried to install oss
again, but this time oss-install fails with "sb.o not found" and "kernel
not suitable for oss".

How can I completely restore the system from the ALSA trials (restoring
/etc/modules.conf doesn't seem to work)?

Why are the OSS drivers recommended in the HOWTOs? ALSA seems to be a
universal sound system, while OSS is a third party product.

How can I get sound without disturbing noises???

Thanks, Markus

In the machine's bios, can you deselect AGP and select PCI as
primary device? The AGP machines I have allow that.

> 2. Do I have to install Linux again, to use a different graphics card?
> Any problems I might encounter? I mean the primary device will always be

Not "No problem at all", but you don't need to reinstall linux.
You probably will need to install another X driver or X package.
AFAIK, XFree86 doesn't support multihead or multicard operation.
Commercial product Accelerated-X supports multihead for some cards;
see http://www.acceleratedx.com/Pages/MXcardReference.html

About the GVX1, you might look at the SUSE site which has
GLint X drivers for linux. Also see if the lower-end or generic
drivers such as XFree86-SVGA-3.3.2.3-25.i386.rpm and
XFree86-VGA16-3.3.2.3-25.i386.rpm work with the GVX1.
You would rpm -i the package, rm the /etc/X11/X link,
ln -s XFree86-SVGA X, and then run XF86Setup or
xf86config to enter settings.

If you have KDM selected, and your system comes up
with an unusable X display, use ctrl-alt-F4 to get to a
text console (F4 selects the fourth one), log in as root,
and edit the /etc/inittab line id:5:initdefault: to
id:3:initdefault: to select a text-based runlevel default
instead of X-based. Or enter telinit 3 at a text console
when you want to shut down KDM, and telinit 5 to
restart it. This will allow you to change XF86Config
and try again.

Running RH 6.1. Using printtool to add a printer. Ran into a problem
I've never seen or know how to approach:

"Auto-detection found the following:
/dev/lp0 : Not detected
/dev/lp1 : Not detected
/dev/lp2 : Not detected

.......

If no devices were detected this could indicate a hardware problem
that justifies further investigation."

What's going on here? How do I approach a fix? I managed, a month ago,
to run printtool on this very machine and set up a printer and
print. No changes have occurred although we did have a big poweroutage
on Saturday (was in the news, blacked out all of NM) but I have been
able to put my NT4.0 disk (not in the poweroutage, it lives in my desk
drawer most of the time :)) into this machine and print to my
printer. This tells me that the printer devices/drivers are all ok and
the printer works. Something weird about my Linux setup? I tried
another Linux RH 6.1 disk which was also in my desk drawer and I get
the message above about not detecting /dev/lp#

Thanks!

As a starting point for docs try
www.linuxdoc.org

See the HOWTO areas for help on setting
up multiple OS on one
or more physical drives. Basically, you
need to start with a boot kernel that has
scsi drivers that will work with your HD
and CDROM(s). On the dist. install
CD there's usually an images directory
with rawrite.exe and a bunch of kernel
boot disk images to get you started.

You need to read the docs on the CD
to see which drivers are in which boot
disk. If it recognizes your devices on
boot, then most of the battle is over.
Also on the web sites for the various
distributions you can go to the download
area and see exactly what images are
on their CD. If it don't have what you
need, get a different dist.

If you're going to install multiple OS
then I recommend Partition Magic
5.0 or higher. It makes things much easier
since it can resize fat, fat32 and ext2
partitions, so you're not stuck after
you install things. You can shift
stuff around a bit. Anyway,
read the relevant HOWTOs and you'll
save yourself a lot of frustration.

Good luck.

Does anybody have this controller working properly? There was nothing
mentioned at linhardware.com. I am running RH 6.1 and plan to use 4 27GB
drives at RAID level 0.

Thanks,

With kernels 2.2.10 and above(I've used 2.2.12-8 on TurboLinux
Workstation 4.0 personally) the info at this page should get you
going:

http://www.geocities.com/wrattz/linux6.html

The Promise boot disk image from the Promise site will boot
and recognize the drive if you use the params as shown at
that url but if you have scsi CDROM you're screwed since they
don't have any scsi drivers on that kernel! Just get a dist.
with a new kernel and type in the 'append' params as shown
in the link and you should be golden. (Also during the install
put the same params for passing to lilo to boot from hd.)

Try getting the current (3.1.13) PCMCIA package. It should do a
better job of handling these goofy kernel version strings.
