It has been in the news before, but summarising: get the gimp printer driver
suite, which you find under the name `stp'. Get latest alladin ghostscript.
The dtp source both provides a plugging for gimp and gs. Then use the `upp'
schema to get the stp driver properly installed under apsfilter. This works
with nearly all Epson stylus printers.

The best I know of is http://www.linuxprinting.org/printer_list.cgi.
It's not a review site per se; more of a printer compatibility listing.

Hello All!
I have the chance to get a HP Scanjet 4p scanner and connect it to my Linux
box.
Is there anybody out there who is using this scanner? How are the
performances under Linux (with sane)?

Whenever I try to start I get the error "PANIC! Cannot talk to UPS".

I kept at it and I did get my FA311 to work!
I formatted my Linux partition and reinstalled Caldera Desktop 2.4.
Downloaded and compiled natsemi and pci-scan.
Moved files to net directory and added them to my modules.default file.
Rebooted Linux and used COAS to set ip addresses.
Seems to work fine although I have to set ip addresses via COAS each time I
boot the machine. (Don't know how to fix this yet - Newbie issues).
NOTE: I did not add the 'Alias' line as instructed.
I can ftp, and ping fine...still working to perfect samba though.
So there is hope! Don't toss that card!

I'm having a problem detecting my SupraMax Internal PCI Modem. To my
knowledge it is not a Winmodem so I dont know why it is giving me a problem.
When I try to query it, it says it can't detect it.
If anyone knows what could be wrong could you please post a followup or
email me. It would be extremely helpful.
Thank you.

Sure everyone knows. You have a winmodem. What makes you imagine
that you don't? All PCI modems bar a very very few are winmodems. You'd
have to do considerable research to come up with one that wasn't (a la
actiontec, or whatever it's called) and you'd have to work very hard to
convince me that you don't. Yet all you say is "to my knowledge", followed
by a line indicating that you're quite aware that it's an unfounded
subjective hypothesis! Sorry, I don't buy it. Try objectively showing me its
device identifier from /proc/pci and matching it against a list of chipsets
on the linux modem pages (see ref below).
Have you researched your problem, say by reading the Modem HOWTO?
You'll find lots of useful references there.

Hi, could someone please help me?
I have 2 CD drives on the secondary channel ( master is Yamaha 4416,
slave is CDR-50X ).
Linux version is:
VALinux 6.2.1 (RH6.2),
kernel 2.2.14 , recompiled
WITH SCSI support,
WITH SCSI emulation,
NO IDE-ATAPI support.
Cdrecord 1.9
I have the links:
/dev/cdR ~> /dev/scd0
/dev/cdW ~> /dev/scd8
(I tried /dev/cdW ~> /dev/scd1 with same result)
/etc/fstab:
/dev/cdR /mnt/cdR ......
/dev/cdW /mnt/cdW ......
When I try with cdrecord -scanbus I 'm getting a warning saying
"controller returns wrong size for CD capabilities page"
When trying to record a disk (KisoCD) it works somehow but won't write
more than around 300MB.
If I disconnect the CD-reader warning message disappear and everything
is fine.
Same hardware configuration works fine with all flavors of Windows.
Would appreciate any idea/help!
Greetings,
Filip

Subject: Re: Problem with SMP kernel on Tekram motherboard
Is this m/b an Intel i840 chipset (Tekram website makes it hard to
search by model number)? If so, there is a strong chance it is the
IO-APIC. If not i840, you might be able to ignore this. In
/var/log/messages, search for this:
kernel: WARNING: unexpected IO-APIC, please mail
Assuming this is present, on rare occasions, you will get something like
this, for either cpu#0 or cpu#1 (when the system dies, if you are lucky
enough for the disk controller to have time, it will write one last
death message):
kernel: unexpected IRQ vector 217 on CPU#0!
If you find either of these, try running SMP, but use kernel option
"noapic" when booting from lilo. E.G., if you have an smp kernel name
2.2.14-5.0smp, at the lilo prompt, hit tab to see what is there, then:
2.2.14-5.0smp noapic
This sounds very similar to the IO-APIC problem i840 SuperMicro boards
have.

It sorta depends on which distribution you're using, but I'd probably
say adding that line to the end of /etc/rc.d/rc.local would be a
reasonable thing to try...

Subject: cd writer?
Date: Mon, 4 Sep 2000 21:39:26 -0400
I just loaded Mandrake 7.0 from CD. Everything seemed okay, but now when i
log on as user or root
I cannot access the CD. The CD is a HP 8250i CD Writer. Mandrake sees it
as an IDE/HDC
I tried changing the properties of the device, but that did not help. If I
try to view the files through KDE Explorer
it says it cannot open them. It is mounted, although it says it is a locked
directory.
Any assistance will be appreciated. I would like to install some more
software that I have, but I need to access
the CD.
My system is an K6-2/350mhz
96 megs of ram
2 HD
Windows on first HD
Linux on 2nd.
HP-CD Burner (only CD on system)(IDE type on second IDE channel as Master)
