I know :))) I found out that you can create manually /etc/sysconfig/sound or
soundcard. This file should contain one line CARDTYPE=anythingyouwant (I
have aureal3d card but I wrote CARDTYPE=SB16 or GUS or ADLIB etc. always
WORKED the same)

Subject: HP LaserJet 5L Printer Prints Blank Pages

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hello.
Would very-much appreciate any "straight-up" advice, from any
benevolent/generous Linux users, that might bring my subject-printer to
life!
Cannot get my HP LaserJet 5L b/w printer locally configured properly.
"Goes through the motions", but output pages are completely blank; no
printed chars. whatsoever.
I am a Linux newbie, with SuSE Linux 6.3 installed on my pc (has an AMD
K6-2 450MHz with 32MB PC100 SDRAM and a 4.3GB UDMA ATA/33 hard drive).
I've attempted configurations via YaST, and apsfilter. I've setup as a
device at /dev/lp0 and /dev/lp1 (... separately; not both active
configs., at same time). Printer drivers attempted thusfar, as a
'Postcript'-type printer, include ljet4; as an 'Other'-type printer,
include (? spelling not necessarily correct on my part. Sorry!):
ljet5gray, ljet5mono, ljet4mono, ljet4gray, pxlmono, pxlgray,
ljet4Lgray, ljet4Lmono, lj4dith.
However, upon command 'tunelp /dev/lp0' (altern. 'tunelp /dev/lp1'), I
get the following stdout: "/dev/lp0 [sic. /dev/lp1] using IRQ -1."
When I attempt to data-print directly to my HP LaserJet 5L, via command
'cat /var/log/boot.msg > /dev/lp0 [sic. cat /var/log/boot.msg >
/dev/lp1]", my HP LaserJet 5L does process, ...but again, all output
pages are blank pages. What am I doing wrong?
Sincerely,

just tried the 2.3 kernel for the first time (I needed usb/ethernet
for my new i-opener) ;-)
it does work! very cool..
but I'm not sure why the linksys adapter doesn't show LINK on its led.
the switch I connect the cat5 cable to shows link and I can ssh (etc)
to and from the box just fine. is the link light at all software
controlled? sounds unlikely but I'm not sure why a brand new usb
adapter would have a broken link led.
(as an aside, I was very surprised how easy it was to get usb/ethernet
working with this very new [to me] device; I know the 2.2 kernel and
its net.devices pretty well; and I was able to get the usb/ether
device up and working without reading ANY docs - just running 'make
menuconfig', taking good guesses at things, then make bzdisk and
reboot. wow. that was friggin' EASY <g> )

The Optra 40 is a bit of an anomaly; it never sold very well because
Lexmark carefully marketed it by storing a pile in a warehouse and not
mentioning it to anyone. The ones we're all buying are closeouts
being liquidated by buy.com.
Hopefully Lexmark will catch on to this market opportunity and
postscript-ify another engine from the Color Jetprinter line so that I
can have a new product to suggest to people.
> Epson makes some nice inkjets, but damn if I can find of them with a
> PostScript option.
There are a few for which you can get a host-based RIP from Epson.
For most of them, you can also use Ghostscript as a host-based RIP
with somewhat variable results.
Postscript inkjets are few and far between. Businesses tend to prefer
faster, cheaper printing technologies since they have larger volumes
and less worry over up-front cost. There are a fair number of
Postscript color lasers out there, for example...
I did a "inkjet and postscript and color" search on my database of
printers, and got only these:
HP |DeskJet 1600Cm |http://www.hp.com/cposupport/prodhome/dj1600m.html
HP |DeskJet 1200C/PS|http://www.hp.com/cposupport/prodhome/dj1200c.html
Lexmark|Optra Color 45 |http://www.lexmark.com/printers/inkjet/OptraColor/45.html
Lexmark|Optra Color 40 |http://www.lexmark.com/printers/inkjet/OptraColor/40.html
The 1200C's Postscript option has been discontinued. Furthermore,
HP's postscript implementation has never been accused of being really
good. (To be fair, it varies wildly from printer to printer; some use
Adobe, some use a clone, etc; the Postscript inkjets are just so far
out of the HP mainline that I'm skeptical).
There are probably a few others out there for which there is a
Postscript option; if you find any, please let me know so I can keep
an eye on them!

The HP DeskJet 1200 and 1600 were available in PostScript versions (1200M
and 1600M, perhaps?). They're both long-discontinued, though. One option
might be to dust off an old 486, throw Linux and Ghostscript on it, and
combine it with whatever non-PostScript printer you like. (I considered
doing that with my DeskJet 682C, but decided instead to snag an Optra 40
when buy.com was blowing them out at $100.)

I just installed Corel Linux 1.0 on my main workstation last
night...probably the easiest Linux install I've ever seen, even easier in
some ways than the average Win9x install. I had to recompile the kernel for
sound (es1370) and SCSI (aha152x) support, but it auto-detected everything
else (even the (ISA non-PnP) tertiary IDE controller I use with my CD
burner...Win98 requires it to be added manually). Having used Linux for
about six years, recompiling kernels is no big deal.
In the short time it's been up, I've gotten ssh installed so I can log into
my server (which runs SuSE 6.2), and VMware is up and running...and in the
middle of a Win98 install (gotta have pcAnywhere for my job, and Internet
Explorer is a better browser than Netscrape...but now, when Windows eats
itself, it won't knock out whatever is running under Linux).
I was going to install SuSE 6.3, but 6.4 is supposed to be out Real Soon Now
(damn, and I just installed 6.3 on my company's new mail server). Besides,
I had a Corel Linux CD from back when it first came out that I had never
used, so I figured it was worth a shot. So far, it's worked really well.
Hopefully I'll get better uptimes from it than I had been getting lately
with Win98 (had trouble getting Win98 to stay up more than three or four
days, while my Linux server is at three weeks and counting).
Can't say anything one way or the other about TurboLinux as I've never used
it (I've used SuSE, Slackware, and (going waaay back) SLS).

again. X is still set up for 800x600, but I can't get the monitor to get away

is chosen for the OS. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks

The hardware that I want to use is essentially two IBM 34GXP 34GB

The IBM drives refuses to work on anything less than 2.2.14 kernel.
There seems to be some UDMA incompatibility there. But there's only
kernel patches for raidtools up to 2.2.11.
What to do?
Does anybody know why there's been no raidtools work done since aug99?
Does any of the recent Alan Cox pre-patches have raidtools support?
If someone have some opinions/suggestions _please_ help!!

I'm doing the Ghostscript solution at one site for an Epson Stylus 800
right now. The results of the Ghostscript run are not as good in terms
of quality as printing directly to the printer from a PC. Colors are
a bit wrong even after considerable diddling with the gs commands and
using a gamma.ps file to lighten the image. Ghostscript is a very good
little program for looking at things on the screen, but it's definitely
Not Ready For Prime Time versus a real Postscript printer implementation
in terms of using it as a raw color printer engine.
My main interest right now is for an office where I've replaced their
NT file server with a Linux/Samba server. Fast and FABULOUS. But while
I was at it, I wanted to handle printing better. So they all spool
through the Linux/Samba server, but the GhostScript to Epson conversion
is less than perfect and they are complaining about quality. Keep in mind
this is an office with a bunch of Windows PC's, can't have things
be too complicated on their side of it. Also I'd rather have the PostScript
engine back where it belongs in the printer and not on my Samba server.
I am putting an Optra 40 in as a cheap stopgap fix until I find something
better. My ideal would be if the Epson 900 or something similar had a
PostScript option for it. ~$500 is in their price range. The HP 2500
is a bit of a hard sell at over $1300.
