Hi Vic,

Sorry I cannot provide much help here, but I'm having pretty near the
same problem. So if you get some success, I'd appreciate it if you
share your findings.

When/if the modem makers decide that developing drivers for other OS's will
result in extra profits from additional sales.

The problem is the MS does shit like withhold vital API information to any
company with the gaul of developing for a non-MS OS.

I put the requested files below plus a bonus file.
I checked the Device Manager and Windows and we do have
the same idea about jumper settings.
Someone suggested that Windows sometimes remaps IRQs, but I
understood this only applied to Plug-and-Play devices. My ISA
2-port serial card can only be configured by jumpers.

I want to thank both of you for the help on the KDE sound problem I
had. It worked fine. This is why Linux works. You've always got
someone around that can help you and you can always help someone with
something. If Linux becomes as popular as Microsoft, the source stays
open, and the tech support stays the same, there is no way Linux can
loose!

I guess I answered my own question since I just
finished rebuilding the kernel
under redhat 6.2 -- geez -- Has Redhat started testing
their software or
something? <g> -- It's really just about perfect...
That was .. well .. a
completely troublefree upgrade from 6.1 and not one of
my settings was touched
or whacked. I'm really impressed and as an added
bonus, a few things I could
never get to work quite right (e.g. realplayer g2
little problems, my soundcard
-- ) are all working perfectly.

Give me a few days and I'll start bitching but for now
it's really nice.

Info about upgrade:
Dl'd i386/RedHat/* from metalab.sunsite.edu (about
550mb)
Got the image file from i386/images
Made a single 6.2 boot.img floppy
Left all the images on the D: partitiion of my win 98
device to save room in the
linux partition.
Booted off the A: 6.2 floppy
Followed the prompts as usual, though it had a few
tweak this time,
When asked where it was , I was able to choose from a
list of available
partitions that included my win98 ones.
Told it where the root was and to upgrade everything
and it did, took about 12
minutes and booted right up.
I dual boot between 98 & Linux & everything I tested
worked fine.

      on to xfree 4.0 <g>

I maintain a version of ftape-4.03pre2 for 2.2.x/2.3.x kernels; you
can download it from http://www.csd.uu.se/~mikpe/linux/ftape/.

(As you already discovered, the official ftape-4.02 driver hasn't
been kept up to date with semi-recent kernels.)

Yes, the upgrade was very clean indeed. Best RH upgrade I've done yet.
I'm impressed, although there weren't a lot of changes in this version,
it's nice to know stuff is up to date, and painlessly :-)

Hi Justin -

A couple of changes to this version that I was at least a bit
interested in were 1) new software raid abilities, and 2) partitionless
install. If you get into either of those, I'd be curious to see how they
worked. I'll look into them eventually myself.

        glad it went well --

Subject: HELP! Linux partitions reported as FAT16! Partition ID error?
Date: Fri, 31 Mar 2000 00:08:29 +0200

HI.
I'm kinda new to all this partition stuff, and had lot's of weird problems
during install of Redhat 6.1.
It all ended up with that linux installed on a (what it thought) was an
ext2-partition, but as it discovered later, was a FAT-16.
I think the filesystem is written in an ext2-filesystem-like-pattern, but
the partition table says the partition is fat 16.
This makes windows want to format it all the time! Scary stuff.

1. Can I change the partition's system-ID without loosing data?
2. If so, with what program? I have see that partition magic has a command
named format, where you can choose from different filesystems, but that
sounds too brutal!

3. My guess is use cfdisk, and just nicely change the partition-system-ID
and all's well?
Keep in mind that linux cfdisk now sees the / and <swap> as fat 16 and
DOS-compatibility filesystems, but linux still boots from them quite
happily!

Thanks a lot for helping an insecure linux newbie!!!

Hi,

I have a 16 MB ATI Rage video card. I got it working under linux. After a few
days, though when I tried booting in linux, the screen was blank (no penguin). So
I booted from the floppy, checked lilo.conf, copied the old config.in, etc and
tried to start the X server. I got an error message - "could not open framebuffer
/dev/fb0 does not exist." How do I fix it?

Also I am unable to play audio CDs. There is no sound. I browsed the web and I
was asked to install aumix and set it to record (maybe play through the sound
card). However I could not install the package because I got an error - make:
recursive error. Tried to install gettext only to face the same problem.

Thanks in advance,
Arvind

Linux will only boot from partition under the 1024 cylinder mark.
So be sure to have at least /boot under that mark. It only has to be as
large as 1 cylinder.
The following is what I did and it works.

I'm using TurboLinux Workstation 4.0.
It has 2.2.12-8 kernel. All I did was
boot the CD and at the boot prompt enter
linux ide2=0xyyyy,0xyyyy where the yyyy's are the hex
addresses obtained from either cat /proc/pci when booting
the Promise boot disk, or from Win98 device manager.

So far I can only get it to run in pio mode, but bonnie
shows numbers ranging from nearly 4 MB/sec to 6.7 MB/sec
so it's not too bad.

I got the Promise boot disk image from www.promise.com
but it turns out I didn't need it.

It may be an issue of having more than one drive, so I
can't help you there.

SCSI devices are /dev/scdX where X is (usually ) 1 to 6
As you have noted that your drive is IDE it will be /dev/hdX where X is a
b c or d
You say the Ricoh 7040A is secondary Master then it is /dev/hdc

if you have a mount point of /cdrom then the syntax is

mount /dev/hdc /cdrom

I can then ping outwords, but can not be pinged. I then get a message:

spurious 8259A interrupt: IRQ7
eth0: interrupt(s) dropped!

I had to edit my /etc/pcmcia/config file and add:

card "techworks LPC3-TX"
   manfid 0x8a01, 0xc1ab
   bind "pcnet_cs"

I have also had to add the line in my /etc/pcmcia/config.opts

module "pcnet_cs" opts "hw_addr=0x00,0xa0,0x0c,0x40,0x1e,0x0e"

as it reported that it could not work out the card's hardware network
address.

I've also added the appropriate data to the /etc/pcmcia/network.opts file
also.

Below is some of my message log file. If you need more info, just let me
know and I can supply all that is needed.

Thanks to those who answered my last posts. If anyone is using both D
channels with an I-Modem, please tell me what your init string is. The
courier documentation is not really helping me. I can only connect to my
ISP using a single D channel.

David Flory

Why don't you examine the slackware 7.0 distribution and locate the
.config file that Patrick used to build the kernel?

Has anyone had any experience of using the D-Link DFE-570tx quad fast ethernet
card?

I'm looking to use one in a server, combining all four ports into our switch.

Could any replies be sent by email too please?

Thanks,

Darren.
