Hey guys,

I need some help! I just bought one of the new AMD 'EasyNow' PCs. It's
one of those 'non-legacy' PCs running on an AMD K6-2 450 and it's
soooooo slow! Let me give you some specs first:

AMD K6-2 450
512k cache
128MB PC100 SDRAM
SiS530 sharing 8MB ram
4.3GB Seagate HD on an SiS5513 controller
SiS900 10/100 ethernet card
SiS7018 sound card
USB Keyboard & Mouse

I'm running SuSE 6.3 on it (kernel 2.2.13 and Xfree86 3.3.5)and it's
unbelievably slow! It takes about 12 seconds to get from the login
manager into X with KDE! In comparison, my PII 450 only takes about 2-3
seconds!

Does anyone have any idea what it could be? I know that it could be the
crap SiS530 video chipset but when I'm running ktop, I find that syslogd
and X are taing up the most resources (up to 45% each!).

Could it be the effect of the USB mouse? Every time the mouse is moved
or a key/button clicked, a message is written to the console. Could that
be what's eating all the resources?

I just don't get it since so many people seem to say that it should be
almost as fast as a PII 450! Please help!

Cheers!

Julian

I cannot get the sound system to work in my linux box which contains an
Aureal Vortex PCI card. I'm running the Slackware 7.0.0 distribution. I
downloaded and compiled the linux driver from linux.aureal.com; built with
no errors. Followed install instructions exactly and still no sound: I
have no sound when using KDE, Gnome, or Enlightenment . . . nor can I
listen to CDs, which is even stranger considering the cdrom is directly
connected to the sound card. Sound system and CD player works fine when I
use the "other" OS also in box. Anyone have any ideas?

You didn't mention the NIC I consider to be the best in the industry ...
and that's the 3Com 905 (could be B-TX or C-TX or straight 905-TX).
Before I'd pay 69 bucks for an Intel NIC I'd get a 3Com NIC for the about
the same price that will not only out perform all the other NICs (when
splitting hairs) but comes with free tech support and a lifetime warranty.

Nick, My vote is also for flakey memory. My original computer
memory was 64meg. This year I added another 64meg, rebooted and
all was well. Tried he same thing on another computer and got
nothing but grief. Finally had to remove the new memory. Cliff

K6-2 comes only with 256k cache.... it's significantly slower than PII and
K6-3....

So if you examine the "techref" manual for this printer, you'll see
how to query the printer for ink levels directly. It would be trivial
to have the attached host email someone when it gets low.

I would not pay $69 for Intel or 3com. I vote for Linksys LNE100TX ($15
after rebate here in San Diego) or
Netsurf (RTL8139) 10T/100T ($20) . I have a RTL8029 (eth0), RTL8139 (eth1),
LNE100TX (eth2) and SN3200 (eth3)
on my NFS/Samba server.

No you're all wrong...

Get the SIS 10/100

$13/Card at local screw shop.

Works better than my 3COM 905 by any measure,
ease of use, speed. The card just works.

Installed it under both all and Linux 2.2.12, 2.2.14, and 2.3.99pre4

Hi Gene,

Thanks for the reply.

Actually, I _did_ do the math (as you say) and came up with the 3.14..MB
which I thought would work with my 4MB card. I have no idea how much
"extra" the video card needs to really do the work, so I concluded that
it _may_ work. I just wasn't sure. Is there a commonly known guideline
as to what percentage (or perhaps integer multiple) of the cards video
RAM is needed for the video card just to "do it's thing"?

Another funny thing: the documentation for my AGP video card states that
the card is not expandable above 4MB because it isn't necessary for an
AGP card. They claim they use the PC's main memory (per the AGP
architecture).
So, I don't know what to make of that in light of this analysis of how
much
memory is needed.

Anyway, thanks for the advice. I'll check into a beefier video card.
For now, to keep Netscape looking nice I'm running at 16-bit color.

Don't know if this is of help since you've tried gui's I haven't (I use kde).
But.. worth a shot. Do a search for startkde "find / -name 'startkde' -print"

and edit it when you find it, just to look at it. Search around for where it
checks the sound config and runs the sound routines if it finds that it
'thinks it has' a certain card. It does an if 'cardtype' is found in some
/etc/.. file and in my case, that file didn't exist and I also have the card
you do. I just created the file and set the cardtype to something insane like
"VIDEO" and all sound routines work fine now, including desktop events. Maybe
the gnome startup scripts do something similar? Don't know. I'm also using
redhat 6.2 so that may make some difference but I doubt it. Kde should be kde
wherever it is.

Yes, this is what I did. The only problem now is now to get dma working. I
moved my CD and tape drive to the promise so I could put all my disks on the

Ken,

Your best best is to check out:
http://www.inria.fr/koala/colas/mouse-wheel-scroll/

This allows you to program the system to accept the wheel in Netscape
and XTerm (although when I used the XTerm settings provided, mine
doesn't work on XTerm -- I have the MS Wheel Trackball thing -- however,
I can click the wheel and it behaves like a middle button).

Star Office appears to understand the wheel natively.

Ok, first up let me say that while I can fiddle and tweak windows to my

The problem is that i install redhat 6.1 and everything seems to go fine,
but xconfigurator doesn't know my graphics card (nvidia geforce DDR). I've
downloaded the linux drivers from nvidia's website (through windows) but now
i need to get them into linux and installed and i need to get a gui of some
kind working (the guis refuse to use generic drivers).
Once i get into a graphical interface i know that i can work stuff out it's
just that it's very hard trying to do thing from a command line when you
don't know any commands.

I would like you to please mail me with step by step instructions on how to
transfer the driver file from a windows partition to the right place on a
linux partition, then how to install them and whatever else it takes to get
me into a gui

the file has dyn.tar.gz at the end of it's name - i assume it's a .gz file
and i can extract it from windows if needed

The latest RedHat, 6.2, came with the pcmcia-cs source in the
/usr/src/linux/pcmcia directory; just "make config" "make" "make install"
and read the documentation, and you'll be set. Don't know for sure about
6.1, but you might try that. I *think* there may have been some problems
with Kingmax cards--check the URLs above for more info. HTH,

I've been trying to install some sort of Unix on a Compaq LTE5250 laptop.

Redhat 6.1:

When the machine is docked and an external keyboard plugged in the Redhat
installer does not respond to the internal keyboard at all, and any keypress
on the external keyboard repeats at a high rate until the next key is struck
so it is impossible to enter any input.

When the external keyboard is disconnected the internal keyboard works but the
install hangs randomly, which may or may not mean that it is simply not
reading the keyboard any more.

I couldn't try undocked as the machine won't boot from a CD and you can only
put the CD-ROM or the floppy drive in the laptop itself, not both.

Mandrake 6.1:

Everything peachy until it says probes for a mouse. It hangs at the
"detected a PS/2 mouse" stage.

Redhat 5.2:

Installed without a hitch but could not get an X display, not even 640x480.

FreeBSD 3.4:

Installed without a hitch, X display worked (in XF86Setup) but would not
recognize any pointing device (internal "pencil eraser" gadget or external
PS/2 mouse).

What I'm basically looking for is a "recipe" for installing Redhat/Mandrake 6.1,
Redhat 5.2 or FreeBSD (in decreasing order of preference) to be able to use the
box to surf the web with Netscape.

Any help would be appreciated.

Markus
