Master or slave has nothing to do with boot order.
If you boot of cdrom the system takes the first cdrom eg if you have
cdrom on hdb and hdc the hdb will boot.

Well, this is a web-mail client similar to Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail, and others.
I'd prefer to have some layer to seperation there. The clients just see the
web interface, and don't need to worry about SSH, telnet, or any other
layers.

This line is wrong, change it to:

And see if that helps...

While I'm something of a zealot about telling people they should write
a device driver if they want to drive a device (see my response to the
original poster), it is perfectly possible to access bare metal from a
user process in Linux (though not likely to be a good idea). See the
iopl and ioperm man pages.

It's likely that what you want is to write a device driver so user
processes can access your device; writing one is straightforward but
is something more than a straightforward port. Having said that
however...

Take a look at the documentation for the iopl and ioperm system calls,
and the file /usr/include/asm/io.h. Also, buy Rubini's book on Linux
device drivers (last time I recommended this book, I got a response
saying maybe the poster didn't need a real device driver; to clarify
in advance, the book will be helpful regardless).

Well, before I had a chance to try your advice, I tried a new install...

After a brand new install and Mandrake 7.2 updates session - 2 hours, my
cdrw on hdc still does not read files in shell or in KDE. Before I try
the supermount -i disable, I would like you to see the setup without any
interference from me.

[tom@maine tom]$ ls -l /dev/cd*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 Apr 10 08:06 /dev/cdrom -> hdb
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Apr 10 12:08 /dev/cdrom1 -> /dev/hdc

/dev/hda6 /home ext2 defaults 1 2

/dev/hde5 /mnt/win_d vfat user,exec,umask=0 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0

Any new ideas? Thanks very much!

I had a similar problem and the solution was that my BIOS has a setting
called Plug'n'Play OS. It was set to TRUE when the machine came with the
standard Win ME software. I set it to FALSE and then my card was detected
and all that good stuff came together.

So the Problem is fixed. DRI is now loaded. But my
/var/log/XFree86.0.log meant the following.

(II) R128(0): Using 8 MB AGP aperture
(II) R128(0): Using 1 MB for the ring buffer
(II) R128(0): Using 2 MB for vertex/indirect buffers
(II) R128(0): Using 5 MB for AGP textures

That makes 16MB GraphicCard memory. But my Card
supports 32MB.

And Quake is still running not very liquid.
Even unplayable. Every 2 seconds a new frame.
But the graphic quality equals to Quake under Windows.

How can I get it liquid?

This doesn'y make much sense to me... you have both cdrom1 and cdrom2
linked to /dev/hdc and I can't see any good reason to do that :^)

I don't have an IDE CDRW myself, but I do know Linux handles them as SCSI
devices with the ide-scsi emulation driver. I'd try removing the cdrom2
link (rm cdrom2) and relinking it with "ln -s /dev/scd0 /dev/cdrom2".

Do an "ls -la /dev/scd*" to check that the SCSI emulation is working and
the device exists.

> /dev/hde5 /mnt/win_d vfat user,exec,umask=0 0 0
> none /proc proc defaults 0 0
> /dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0

I'd then add a line to the fstab reading

/mnt/cdrom1 /mnt/cdrom1 supermount fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/cdrom1 0 0

and remember to "mkdir /mnt/cdrom1" to create the mount point.

As I see it, you then should have your regular CD-ROM mounted as cdrom and
your CDRW mounted twice, as a regular IDE device and as an emulated SCSI
device. You might get an error saying "device already mounted" but ignore
that, we first just want it to show up somewhere :^)

After you're done editing, do a "umount -a" followed by a "mount -a" to
remount everything, then a plain "mount" to find out where everything is
mounted.

Adding the second NIC caused the PCI allocation routines to see the IDE
controller at a later point during configuration, effectively shifting
ide2 onto ide3. You will need to redo your boot (LILO or whatever) options
to reflect the change. Many motherboards see the builtin devices after
any devices in the slots.

Hi'all,

Im looking for the pinout for the MiniPCI type III (card-edge) connector.
A search on the web only turns up for-pay/members-only links and/or glossy
PDF-brochures with smiling men in suits who tell me in baby-language that
their 'solution' is the best for my 'enterprise'. I hate that.

So, if there's anyone out there who wants to further the cause of open

The only PCI model of this modem I find on the Supra site is a
"winmodem", which uses software to emulate much of what is done in
hardware in a 'real' modem. You are likely out of luck here, as most
winmodems are not supported in linux.
I would suggest selling the modem, and, getting a good, external
model. That will hook right up, with no problems.

Yup, all the Diamond PCI modems on the Big List appear to be
winmodems:

There are some controller-based PCI modems listed on these pages:
