I've got a Panasonic KX-P4410 Laser printer (it is old, but it works
well) that I can get to work with Redhat linux via their printtool.
However, because the printer makes poor use of its memory (having only
512kb), it is impossible to print out pictures, etc. (on text works
good) with it. I was wondering if one of the available queing programs
can feed the printer only a little bit of data at a time so that I don't
get buffer overruns. I currently use lp (or whatever the most common
one is). I've tried to get pdq to work, but have not had much luck with
it. BTW, it is postscript capable (or at least it seems to be).

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Kevin

X4.0 uses one server now, instead of the many that it did. New server is
/usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 (may vary depending on your installation).

Hi.

I hope someone can help. I can't seem to get Linux on my laptop. It's
an HP n3270. Nothing works. I've had it for 6 weeks now and never even
used it :/

It has a Trident Cyberblade i7 agp card in it. I saw support for the
card on the xfree863.3.6 card database screen. It seems to have
installed but I get this error now when I try to run startx. This is
with Mandrake... That was the only recent version that had 3.3.6 xfree
86.

Error:
You must provide a "Screen" section in XF86Config for at least one of
the following graphics drivers: fbdev

Fatal server error:
No configured graphics devices.

Please help.

Thanx.

Well, this is one I haven't run across before...the machine in
question is an IBM Thinkpad 390E, with a 4GB disk, dual boot with
W98 and RH 6.1. It seems to run fine, with the exception of dozens of
these
messages in the log:

Apr 3 14:14:23 ldieter kernel: file_cluster badly computed!!! 6 <> 9

I would suspect that the disk is on it's way out, but it seems to be
working fine.

Anyone else run into this?

TIA!

So there's not much you can do for general purpose printing to
conserve memory; you'd have to identfy all the apps that can't print
properly and restructure the way they print.

For lasers, what happens is that the print data is interpreted and a
page is built up in memory. That page is then burned onto paper.

So, you can shrink the memory requirements at various stages:

 - Print less complex pages, ie with mostly text.

 - Print at a lower resolution, ie 300 instead of 600.

 - Print using a less complex interpreter language, ie PCL instead of
   Postscript.

If all this fails, add more memory.

Here's my problem.

I want to buy a video-card for my computer (a Pentium III 450)
It has to work with w98 and redhat 6.0
It also has to have some 3D support because I'm running flightsimulator
2000 pro under W98.

What is a good video-card for a reasonable price?

I haven't got mine yet, but just dug through my pile of "stuff." It
seems I have only 8MB SIMMs.

Will 8MB do me, or should I go ahead and spend some cash? The vast
majority of what I do will be black text, with the occasional web page

Hi
as root type the following:
mkdir /mnt/dos
mkdir /temp
mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mount/dos
--->where hda1 should be the windowsdrive, if not addapt
cp /mnt/dos/WAY_TO_THE_FILE/blabla.tar.gz /temp
cd /temp
tar -xvzf blabla.tar.gz
---> this will create a subdirectory named to the file
cd blabla
----> read the readme files.
An easy way to navigate , view an manipulate files is Midnight commander.
type mc to invoke it.

The power supply theory is interesting - never thought of that. The computer
is allready stuffed with tape drive, CDRom, Zip drive etc - I'll look into
that.

However, as a test, I took the new IDE disk (/dev/hdc) home this weekend and
tried to run fdisk and mke2fs on it on my own PC (running Slackware 7) which
has much less hardware on it. Got the same errors when running mke2fs on it
there - so I have to assume that the brand new unused drive is toast...? And
that it's just a coincidence that this new drive was broken at the same time
as I found out about the problems with the other, older drives (/dev/sda and
/dev/hda)....?

Or am I doing something wrong setting up the disk?

A .tar.gz file is a tarred (all files into one) and then compressed file (with
gzip)

you need
1 to get it from win to linux
1.1 mount windows disk
      log in as root
      enter : mount /dev/win95
if your windows disk is called win95
To know what is the name of your windows partition enter :
        more /etc/fstab
you should see a line like this one
       /dev/sda1 /mnt/win95 vfat
noexec,dev,suid,noauto,rw,conv=binary,uid=0,gid=0,perm=0 1 1

After this the directory /mnt/win95 is the root directory of your windows
disk.
1.2 copy it under linux
       cp /mnt/win95/incomming/dyn.tar.gz .
You have it under linux
2 uncompress and install it
to unzip and untar the file enter
   tar -xzf dyn.tar.gz
Do this in a special directory (just to see)
   You get some extracted files.

Some one else may tell you what to do with those files.
You should search a readmee file

Good luck

I had the same problem and found the answer here yesterday. If you add
the line "alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc" (no quotes) to your
/etc/conf.modules file it should fire right up. I'd spent the entire day
trying to get my printer running with no luck. Logged on to the group
and found that line, added it to my conf.modules file and it fired right
up.

I am using two scsi cards on my system. An adaptec 2940UW )PCI) and an

PCI card is automatically found and initialized at bootup, but since the
1510 has no bios and is a cheapo (good for ext. devices though), I have to
pass kernel arguments. The problem is that when passing kernel arguments
for that card, it is setup first so it is now scsi0. however, I want it to
be scsi1. Any ideas? Please don't tell me to load it as a module b/c i
don't want to do that. I want to be able to bootup with both devices, but I
need the pci card to be first. Please respond by email and to the group.

coppermines, so after downloading the latest version (which stated on their
website that it now supports coppermines) and flashing it in, the CPU is now
shown as 533EB MHz (previously showed just 533 MHz) - however cache still
shows 0KB in proc/cpuinfo... And I still cannot install windows98 - always
crashes on the install, usually blue screen with an error in 'VxD CACHE'...
Which motherboard did you have/have now? Mine is an MSI MS-6153VA... I hope
there's not a bug in these new CPU's!

Nick.

Subject: Booting Linux on HP Vectra w/ AIC 7880

I'm trying to boot (install) Linux on an HP Vectra XU,
96MB, on board AIC 7880 controller, two HDs (ST32171N),
The AIC BIOS introduces itself as "Ultra BIOS v1.2.S-HP, (c) 1996".

The AIC7xxx driver initializes and then error messages start flooding the
screen. I wrote things down like "Parity error during data-in phase",
"SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0", "SCSI host 0 abort (pid
2) timed out - trying harder", "SCSI0:0:0:1 No active SCB for reconnecting
target - Issuing BUS DEVICE RESET" and so on ...

So far I tried debian slink (2.0.36 kernel, even the special aic7xxx
rescue disks), debian potato (2.2.14 kernel), and slackware 7
(2.2.13? kernel, aic7xxx.s image).

I also switched settings in the SCSI BIOS on and off: SCAM support,
enable disconnect, and initiate sync negotiation, and checked all cable
connections in the computer. NT seems to have no problem with the box and
runs fine.

Any ideas how to get Linux running on this box?

Thanks,

        Jens

In general you need to enable the enhanced RTC and you need to disable
advanced power management. The first is a must, the second can lead to all
kinds of nutty problems. I am currently using Mandrake 7.0 and xosview shows
the dual cpus. xsysinfo does also. i have also seen the duals with RedHat
6.0 and 6.1 on fresh installs. Actually for Mandrake, at install you get
two kernels - the smp and the 1 cpu version. i suspect SUSE does give you
both but it is not your default boot. Try hitting tab to see if you have a
dual version at bootup or try peeking at /boot to see what is there.

I have a

I ran into no trouble with mine doing that sort of thing before I added
storage. I had no problems until I tried printing photos. Now, with
an added 16M, I have had no trouble at all. Therefore, I expect 8M
would do you fine.
