Linux doesn't always detect the memory properly. Don't ask me why. I
have an identical system, and I had the same problem with memory. You
can feed the kernel the information as "mem=128M" (without the quotes)
on boot at the lilo prompt, or you can add this as an append statement
to lilo.conf so that it does it automatically on boot. That's what I
have done.

OK, so now I have a follow up question. I thought it was working since
it appeared to be printing (at least sort of) using the test page
feature of RH6.1's printtool. The only problem I ran into was due to
low memory. However, since then, I've tried to set it up with Samba,
but, alas I have failed. I also tried to print a text file from the
prompt (outside of kde) and it too kind of fails. For instance, I sent
a command to print a text document:

lpr text.txt

Since there is only one printer, I figured this would work. However, it
returns the following statement:

bash: /home/dressel/.bashrc: Permission denied

dressel is my account on the machine, though it give this same error
regardless of whether I am logged as root or as dressel. Would this be
a permissions error somewhere? I have done nothing to the files that
Red Had supposedly set up when I installed the printer.

In any case, I thought that this problem may have related to the Samba
problems. I'm definitely no expert here, so any help is great!

In the future, I'd like to try a different printer que. I tried for
kicks to install pdq, but I have thus far been unable to get it to print
anything.

Cheers,
Kevin

Date: Tue, 04 Apr 2000 19:30:16 GMT

I have an ESS 1869 plug and play audio drive on my computers motherboard.
My system dual boots with Linux Mandrake 7.0 but whenever I try to
play an audio cd using one of the media players the cd spins in the drive
and the timer in the player software starts counting but no music plays. I
have tried configuring this with "sbdconfig" and linuxconf but nothing
seems to work.
When I used sndconfig the samples played when I tested it at the end
and system sounds that play when I log off work fine, but cd's just won't
play.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

Thankyou.

It's hard to go wrong with a low-cost ATI card like the Rage128-based
low-end cards. You can get one for about $100 if you shop around a
little bit. They're great all-around performers, do great on DVD
playback, and are decent (but not great) gaming rigs. If that's still
outside your budget window, you can try a ~$50 Rage Pro-based card like
the @Work98 cards -- but I warn you, the gaming performance of these
cards is really subpar.

ATI cards also have the advantage of being well-supported on just about
every OS under the sun.

Hi,

As you can guess, I cannot install this card on my PC.

I compiled the kernel and included support for Creative Ensoniq AudioPCI
97 (ES1371).
I booted the new kernel, and lsmod says:

es1371 27712 0
soundcore 2340 4 [es1371]

But I have the usual symptoms:
cat: /dev/sndstat: No such device

And of course there is no music!

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Simon

Hi! I have one of those! So far, no luck. It's not the MegaRAID.
The PERC2/Si requires different drivers.

Dell directed me to an ftp site that had rpms for both the Perc2
Si RAID and the user interface software. There was also a disk
image for use when first installing Linux on such a system. This
is supposed to work for RedHat 6.1.

However, none of it seems to work. With the rpms installed, the
OS still does not "see" the RAID adapter, although it sees the
other Adaptec just fine.

The driver for use on first installation of Linux seems to be
loaded in the wrong place, such that no matter how many times
I ask it to load the driver (in "expert" install mode), it
never "takes". Linux never sees the RAID.

The URL was:
http://support.dell.com/us/en/filelib/download/index.asp?fileid=2741

I suspect that the system was supposed to ship with a special
version of the RH6.1 CD-ROM known as SBE2. This might be the
source of the problem.

I replied by e-mail to the Dell Service Technician who sent me
the URL, but so far (3 days) he hasn't replied. Hmmmmm....

If you have any better luck than I did, please let me know!

AFAIK there is no such support ... caldera has limited support
for usb mice and keyboards but I think that is it. The real USB
support is coming in linux 2.4

I didn't see anything in RH 6.2 about USB.

This should work very well, so long as it's a more recent IDE drive or a
SCSI drive. The cd-creation software that everyone uses is the cdrecord
package (including cdrdao.) There are a number of graphical frontends
like cdrtoaster and xcdroast, but the command line is far more flexible
and less buggy IMHO.

You already have the drivers for your CD-RW in source form. Read the
CD-Writing HOWTO for a good guide to getting everything working.

is it scsi? If so, you just use "cdrecord".

To make a copy of a data cd you just do:

cdrecord -speed=X -data -dev=x,x,x /dev/cdrom

you will have to figure out the values for the "speed" and "dev"
switches yourself - see the man page (it isn't hard)
audio works much the same way

To make you own cd's you use "mkisofs" first to make an iso image
and then use cdrecord to burn the image:

cdrecord -speed=X -data -dev=x,x,x /path-to-isoimage

If it is IDE it is a little bit more involved.
Let us know.

There is also xcdroast, and although it is graphical, it isn't
any easier than the commands. In fact, you might find it more
confusing at first.

Not all linux' have /dev/sndstat setup (mine doesn't). Debian
doesn't even set up /dev/audio or anything for you at all.

what distro are you using?

If you have a /dev/audio and /dev/mixer it should work ... what
happens when you try to play a wav file? anything? can you run
any mixer programs?

Subject: Re: BP6: Linux hangs on udma66 HD access
Date: Tue, 04 Apr 2000 20:26:05 GMT

Hi.
I'm having the same problem on my BP6's, but with different drives /
CPU's.

After much discussion with various people and excessive testing (I
have four BP6's) I think it may have something to do with the 2.2.x
implementation of SMP in this case. This could be because celeron's
aren't really supposed to do this, or that there is a problem in the
kernel with SMP for celeron processors. . .

My system was set up as follows:

300W PSU
BP6 with NJ bios release
Dual Celeron 533MHz (not overclocked)
256M ECC SDRAM (PC100)
5 - Seagate 15.3GB UATA66 drives
1 - Quantum fireball lct 5.1GB drive (swap)
3c905 10/100 Ethernet Card
Trident 975 4MB AGP

To test, I tried compiling several SMP kernels of version 2.2.14 with
the latest Hedrick IDE patch, same problem. I then tried 2.2.15pre14
SMP with latest IDE patches and it still hangs with no oops. I
thought it might be the HPT366 so I bought a Promise Ultra66 card and
disabled HPT366 in the kernel. Same problem. Swapped motherboards,
video cards, power supplies, RAM, and everything else with other BP6
based machines, same problem.

I then recompiled under 2.2.15pre14 with the ide patch and NO SMP (you
have to do 'make distclean' to get rid of all the SMP related stuff
that will stay behind with just 'make clean'). When in single
processor mode everything works beautifully, even on the HPT366. I
tried swapping the processors to see if I had a defective one, but it
made no difference.

I suppose that since Abit states in the manual that SMP is solely
experimental, that this could be a problem with their implementation
of it. It could also be a result of celeron's not being designed for
SMP use. I'm not an expert by any means, but I have 4 systems running
this board with multiple processors now (unfortunately 3 are NT/W2k),
and the other three do SMP with no problems. Could there be some
unknown issue with the SMP code in the 2.2.x kernels that could cause
the processors to get out of sync (or confused?) and freeze the box
with no oops or errors?

This is the wierdest thing I've ever seen from linux, and I've been
running it since '95 in the 1.x series . . . I've never had a
hardware problem like this where the machine just goes cold with no
oops or diagnostic messages. . .

Thoughts?

The problem lies in the end of the 128th Mbyte. There are few pages
reserved (not by Linux), and when Linux writes there, it will crash. This
is explained in BootPrompt-HOWTO. Just change the mem=128 to mem=127 for
example. If you really need the additional megabyte, you can try
experimenting with mem=0x7f700000 and so forth.

Subject: Montego sound card & Red Hat 6.2

I have a Dell OptiPlex GX1 with a Turtle Beach Montego PCI sound card
(AU8820 chip). I installed RedHat 6.2 with the 2.2.14 kernel, and I can
not get this card to work. I have the drivers from
http://linux.aureal.com and they worked fine in Red Hat 6.1.
Here is the output that I received after running make install20

[root au88xx-1.0.5]# make install20
make install AUCHIP=AU8820
make[1]: Entering directory `/root/au88xx-1.0.5'
mv -f /etc/conf.modules /etc/conf.modules.old
gawk -f mod_conf /etc/conf.modules.old > /etc/conf.modules
echo "alias sound au8820" >> /etc/conf.modules
echo "alias midi au8820" >> /etc/conf.modules
mkdir -p /lib/modules/2.2.14-5.0/misc
cp -f au8820.o /lib/modules/2.2.14-5.0/misc
/sbin/depmod -a
/sbin/modprobe au8820

make[1]: [install] Error 255 (ignored)
make[1]: Leaving directory `/root/au88xx-1.0.5'

Plug and play is not enabled in the BIOS and not other sound modules are
installed.
