1. You ever noticed that pressurized cabins aren't pressurized to sea level?
Closer to about 8,000 feet if I remember right.
2. You ever noticed that on an airplace they don't pressurize the whole
thing? Thus electornic equipment is left in unpressurized areas.
Airframes STILL have to have systems that function in low pressure
environments regardless of cabin pressurization. I doubt a laptop on an
airframe will fail in the few hours it's there. But long term exposure to
low pressure environs could have effects on electronics. It's still just a
theory that I proposed earlier in the thread but it's a plaussible theory.

7000 feet. And i live at 10,000 feet. So i live above the level most
people "fly" at even when they are at 42,000 feet. Airplanes also have all
their electronics specially protected from high energy particles. Not sure
about pressure.
And i rarely bring my laptop down to work (5500 feet). Even if i did, that
trip would be less than the 0 to 7k that most people experience when they
fly. So pressure change due to the commute is not the cause.
Again, pressure change at the house is frequent and large due to the
weather patterns moving over the continental divide and then down to the
great plains.
My stuff fails in 2 to 3 months. But my sisters modem did in 3 days
(chance?). Here is the best theory i have so far:
hd's fail because of the air pressure. They have breather holes and there
is not enough air to keep the read/write heads off of the disk, so it
damages it. Takes a few months to happen but will probably continue to
happen.
modem/mobo's fail because of the heat. Maybe somethign due to the sealant
expanding and cracking which causes some of the little gold wires to break
also, but that sealant probably breaks/expands due to the heat. THere is
no mass with which to remove the heat from the laptop. Plus, laptops don't
rely on fans as much as the desktops. Laptops heatsink the heat off of the
boards and processors _into_ the case. The case is then supposed ot
dissapate into the surrounding air. yes, they have fans, but the fan is
not the main (or only) source of heat dissipation.
I bet if i get a desktop with SLOW rpm's for the drives and an extra fan i
will run fine. Not sure...

Almost the same for me. I've got a Abit BP6 motherboard with two Celeron 366
overclocked up to 450Mhz !!!
I'm a software developper, so I've frequently used a make -j 5 (for building
the kernel also, and that is a long time test) !
As I loved to see CPU's running, I often run severall programs together,
with a single goal, approach as far as possible one hundred % for
each CPU ! I experienced twice a total lock of my computer within 3 months.
Hum... twice a lock on Linux wich is very often used,
... a hundred times perhaps with my *%%$^$*^$ of Win98 !!! Which is lessly
used (30% -> 70% linux).
Have fun with pinguins !

That's what you got for the extra $ that the LJ4 costs.
I tried this and my output came out double size (width and height). If I check the
4 frames/page button on the filter select dialog the printer takes a lot longer to
process the page like it is doing 600x600 and the output is normal size.
But I'm a doubting Thomas so I put it on a measuring microscope and sure enough
the steps around a circle are 0.0033" (1/300).
Before any says it, no I don't read my output with a microscope, I'm doing some
PC board layout work and could use finer detail.
I think my solution is in the <extra ghostscript options> box, but I can't find the
right
string. Guess I may have to read the ghost script manual. It looks like it covers
everything but I sure is big :-(

Hi. I find your observations interesting since I come from Dos
myself. Started with an 8088 that ran at 7.16 MHZ *if* the Turbo
switch was on! :)
I think you're comparing Linux you have to install with Win9x pre-installed
machines. There's a big difference between a plain old user plugging in
the color-coded wires and powering up the machine, and doing that and
then putting in all the product codes and installing layered software!
How many users would get through installing Windows9x and all the office
software and other utilities without resorting to a support call?
When Linux comes already on the drive, power up and go, then it will be
a fairer comparison.

It's not an urban legend. The 29160 is 64-bit PCI. The 29160N (which I think

Hi there.
I got 2 different distro's from a freind of mine, one was Mandrakw 5.3,
the other was slackware 3.6. I had troubles installing both of them.
I got a error message when intsalling slackware thatwrote :
hda: irq timeout: status = 0x58 {DriveReady Seekcomplete

ide0: reset: success
I think i got the same problem when installing Mandrake, but i just
couldn't see it, but it was stalling ever now and then. Now when I play
around in the command line I get the same message, and when I working
with X windows, it locks up for a while then goes again, I'm assuming
it's the same problem.
If you could help me I would be very grateful.

Hello,
does anyone have a clue why trying to install Redhat 6.1 on an IBM
sTinkpad 600E with a 6GB disk fails on each attempt shortly
after specifying keyboard and language with the complaint that
the harddisk is not available? ("device not configured").
cat /proc/partitions reports only "hdc" (presumably the CDROM)
cat /proc/ide/ide0/model reports "none"
The disk has a single DOS partition of 2GB on it. Win98 boots without

Hi,
I have just replaced my IDE ATAPI cdrom with a new one. I installed
Redhat 6.1 from it fine but now when I boot up, when it gets to loading
hdc I get the following:
hdc:packet command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete
Error }
hdc:packet command error: error=0x54
ATAPI device hdc:
Error: Illegal request -- (Sense key=0x05)
Parameter list length error -- (asc=0x1a, ascq=0x00)
The failed "Mode Sense" packet command was:
"5a 00 2a 00 00 00 00 00 18 00 00 00 "
This repeats 3 times. When I try to mount ( mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdc
/mnt/cdrom ) I get the message:
mount: block device /dev/hdc is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: Wrong medium type
The first line of this is normal of course but the second one is a
problem. This _is_ an iso9660 cd. I know it is because sometimes it
actually works. The only condition that I have found that it works is:
1. boot into console mode of linux
2. mount immediately after logging in.
If I go into X-Windows I then start getting the Wrong medium type
message.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Steve
P.S. I have no problem with this drive when I boot into Windows 2000
although that isn't something that I like to do.

I'm looking for a US resident who will order an Optra 40 Color
printer on my behalf at Buy.com's Clearance Sale. I stay in France. I
tried to place the order myself but only to find out that the goods they
sell online are only deliverable at a US address! Nor do they accept
payments from abroad for delivery in the US.
I really need this printer as it seems to be the only Inkjet postscript
printer at such a low price.(currently selling at some $85). Here in
France Lexmark offers an Optra 45n at $700, which I cannot afford!
If anyone is willing to help then email me at:

You order the printer, get it delivered to your home (shipment is free),
then reship it to me thru UPS or other carrier. You give me the total
cost and I'll send you the money before reshipment, trust me. I can as
much as $200. Low cost shipment that may take even 2 months is no
problem. I can wait, the important thing being to have it some place
before the stock is over. There are still > 300 Optra's in stock but it
won't take long before they are sold out!

Try the desktop idea but do what you can to find drive's without breather
holes. They're hard to come by but you can find them. I suppose you could
buy one at sane altitude and seal the breather hole. I'd like to see
that... could be pretty funny.
Anyway, this one is interesting, keep us posted.

How 'bout some particulars as to drive controllers etc?
Is Win98 still on the machine? If so, you can get some
info from Device Manager.
A good resource is

Given that Linux is Linux and I've been running Corel Linux for a bit on my
450-MHz K6-III, there's nothing about the processor that would conflict with
Linux. What motherboard are you using? A K6-III draws significantly more
power than your P5-MMX; if the voltage regulators on the motherboard aren't
up to scratch, you'll run into problems. Ideally, you'll have a motherboard
that's on the approved list (http://www1.amd.com/K6/k6mbl/). (Mine's on an
FIC VA-503+ that previously held a 300-MHz K6-2; a BIOS upgrade was all it
needed.)

I also had a problem. Had to select "unlisted" video card from the list of
cards (way at the end of the list). Then had to select the VGA server. I
can only get 640 x 480 resolution with this setup, but at least it's
working.
