Um, how're you gonna support it if you don't know Linux? I applaud
your effort but DON'T do this until you have used the stuff yourself
as your primary computing environment for a few months.

I noticed that most microphone recording software under Linux
won't turn on the mic as a recording source, with the 2.2.X es1370 driver.
Run a mixer program from your distribution, enable the mic as a
recording source, then run your recording software, then disable the mic.

I have an m599lmr with the same chipset. I use Chen-Li Tien's CMedia
driver (http://www.cmedia.com.tw/8x38/linux/cmpci-2.41.tar.gz) with
kernel 2.2.14 (I didn't know that 2.2.14 already includes support for
CM8x38?). Just follow the directions in the README file and you'll get
(from cmpci.c):
* /dev/dsp standard /dev/dsp device, (mostly) OSS compatible
* /dev/mixer standard /dev/mixer device, (mostly) OSS compatible
* /dev/midi simple MIDI UART interface, no ioctl
Note that there's no /dev/sndstat.
Everything that I've tried works just fine--mpg123, mixers, real
audio, esd, ksound, etc., except speak_freely. I also tried the
commercial OSS drivers and they work fine with speak_freely.
If there are any other options for the CM8738 besides Chen-Li Tien's
and the commercial OSS, I'd also like to know.

I have an 8.4 gig Maxtor drive with the first half in fat32, W98SE. The
Redhat 6.2 boot disk does not recognize the AMD 751/756 chipset,
claiming that I have no hard disk. Expert mode claims I have a corrupted
partition, and offers to erase it for me. (no thanks). So far, I cannot
get as far as FDISK in my installation efforts. I have tried dumbing
down the bios to PIO mode 4, and nothing seems to work.
If I had a working linux machine, I might be able to be more creative,
but right now, I don't even have a linux partition. Perhaps someone
knows of a patched boot.img file posted somewhere that I can use with
RAWRITE.EXE to create a working boot floppy? I would even go for a
patched kernel that I could use with loadlin.

Hi,
I've been having trouble getting my IDE HP CD-W 8110i to work. I think
I've gotten ide-scsi emulation to work. When I do:

But when I try:

I get:

I'm afraid I didn't have any particulars, otherwise I would have posted
them.
However, the problem has been solved: it turns out there are certain versions
of system BIOS that do weird things with disk geometry and confuse linux. A
BIOS upgrade from IBM fixed things.

Since rc.local is a semi-protected file, I would wonder if possibly
there is a problem with write permissions in the directory. If you had
read access, but not write access, perhaps it would do this...meaning
access to the directory as a whole, not just to the file. If you cd to
a directory, you can see the permissions with:
ls -ald .
The "." means the current directory. You can have write permission to
a file, but still be denied if the current directory...or the *parent*
to the current directory...is not writable. Thus, the current
directory needs write, but is not sufficient if the parent itself is
not writable.

Hi. I am using Red Hat 6 Linux (soon to be RH 6.1) and would like to use
some MIDI sequencing software for music composition. I have an old Gravis
Ultrasound and have a synth connected to the PC via MIDI.
How do I set up Linux to use the MIDI port? I checked if I have the
/dev/midi device installed and it isn't. I also tested the soundcard
throught the sndconfig utility and it said that it couldn't open the audio
device file or something like that. I did select the GUS in initial
installation.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

any chance of this beast working with linux even with 2.3.99pre kernels?
ISP offers an internal 3com homeconnect card as another option but havn't
heard or seen anything on these working with linux either. Waiting to hear
back from them if the external 3com dualconnect (usb/ethernet) will work
with their service but don't hold out much hope.

Say, are there any opinions out there about what set of hardware components
(motherboard/processor/harddrive/memory/soundcard/videocard/networkcard)
that would
result in a solid, easily supported system - For the money -- with an
emphasis on value!
If you could break it down to workstation/server, that would be great.
The target market for this would be small to medium sized businesses.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

I'm wondering if the Voodoo 3 itself supports 24 bit. I was thinking
somewhere I saw it works only at 16 bit or less. This might not be
right, but it would be worth checking out.

AFAIK, DSL USB modems require drivers. So even if Linux recognizes
the device, there is still that hurdle. Alcatel makes an ethernet modem
that does indeed work. Called the SpeedTouch. The providers are making
this more difficult than it needs to be. External<>Ethernet works for
everybody.

Is the 64-bit version known to not work? Wondering if maybe it would
still work, but only take advantage of 32 bits, or simply not work at
all. For one thing, when SuperMicro boards finally become available
with the built-in SCSI 3, they are all 64-bit versions.

Just guessing, I would say that when you get to the point that it must
access the SCSI hd's, it has incorrect or insufficient scsi driver
details. The probe may find the correct module to use, but not the
complete parameter details. I don't know the particular scsi
controller you have, so I can't tell you what it needs.

firstly I would suggest comparing /etc/conf.modules and
/etc/isapnp.conf with your saved versions to find what if anything has
changed (not sure why anything would have though..)
I have the same setup. If I recall correctly, I had initially had
similar trouble when I built the system a few months back, but it
worked ok after I did this:
Boot to X login
Ctrl-Alt-F1 and log in as root
sndconfig
init 6 (or whatever your reboot level is)
Boot to X login
login as 'user'
add aumix applet to panel (how you do this depends on your desktop
manager, I guess)
I don't recall having to alias anything
are you running sndconfig in X environment ? (again, i'm not sure why
this would affect anything, but may be a factor)
