I am having some real problems with my sound card.

It is an advance logic als 120, (cheap I know). Problem is I cant get
it to play sounds through sndconfig. First it is not listed when I run
sndconfig. I tried the als 100(which i assume is similar) and then I
tried several differnt irq values and i/o and dma values then once
sndconfig goes to play the sample sound I get an error usually
/lib/modules/misc/2.2something/s????.o is not busy or not responding.
I think I need help modifying my isapnp conf file. I have looked at it
but I dont know what to change. If anybody has any ideas thanx.
I really dont want to compile the kernel<shrug>

Subject: How to setup a dumb terminal as console
Date: Mon, 10 Apr 2000 03:52:27 GMT

Hi,

For some reasons, I can't use VGA monitor as console, I tried to setup
a dumb terminal in my notebook as console, I failed. All messages
displayed in monitor rather than dumb terminal.

I've done.
1) got a null modem serial cable /w 2 & 3 pin twisted.
2) connect COM1 of my notebook to COM2 of Linux box
3) edit lilo.conf add

serial=1,9600n8
image= ..
     append="console=ttyS1,9600"
4) check /dev/console & /dev/tty0
both perm = 622, c, console is 5,1 tty0 is 4,0 that should be okay.

5) because I'm using Mandrake 7.0 the kernel is 2.2.14 so no
recompilation is required. I didn't recompile it.

I wonder if I've missed anything.

Thanks for your expertise in advance.

I have been evaluating two VXA drives, and give Ecrix a big thumbs up.
Their website is unusually detailed, including all aspects of the VXA
technology. Linux operates them as a fully-featured SCSI tape device.
The 66GB capacity is easily reached with ordinary ASCII text. Seeking
by file mark, or to EOD, moves with lightning speed -- a minute at most.

The drives are good value for this class of storage. Check out DAT,
8mm Exabyte or AIT for comparison. VXA media is relatively expensive,
being evaporated metal rather than metal particle. Still cheaper than
AIT.

Summary: A quality product for serious Linux backups.

Subject: Printer company support for Linux

With the number of questions here about recognizing and/or printing on ink
jets from Linux, I just checked the web sites of the four major brands that
I know of: HP, Canon, Epson, and LexMark.

Two of them, Canon and Epson, return nothing when a search for Linux is
made. They do some support of Mac OS but with special printers rather than
special drivers.

LexMark has server web software for handling print ques over the internet,
but no specific printer drivers for non-network Linux systems. These were
for Unix and NT, and recently have RedHat Linuz (only) support.

HP is the ONLY company making Ink Jet printers that is taking a major step
forward in doing open support for Linux. Check out this site:

http://www.internetsolutions.enterprise.hp.com/linux/index.html

So it looks as if the rest of the printer manufacturers want to throw away
the business back to the origional ink jet printer company, HP.

Let the others have what they want - toss their printers in the trash along
with the MS garbage! Certainly, don't every buy a non Linux replacement!

John

If your ISP is X-STREAM (that's what i get from the headers of your
post) then these are your DNS servers:

   Domain servers listed in order:

   NS0.X-STREAM.CO.UK 212.139.128.2
   NS1.X-STREAM.CO.UK 212.139.0.3

You can't double click on the setup icon if there's no windows on the
computer yet. Installing windows for the first time is hard for
windows newbies as well. Once linux is up and running, it's easy to
install programs. I'd just do "apt-get install xmms" to download,
decompress and install xmms, for example. You don't need to get the
source of all software and compile it. It's cool that you can, though.
In windows you have no choice most of the time.

You can download the driver at http://linnix.com. ALS0007, ALS0100,
ALS0110 and ALS0120 are supported.

Having big trouble with my server here. Anyone have any
advice?

This unit was working perfectly fine. I powered it
off, transported it to the office, and powered it back on.
I was very careful and the machine did not get dropped,
shaken, bumped, or severely jarred in any way.

Don't even know what the "bad magic" error means...

sdc, sdd, sde, sdf drives are all in one external chassis,
while sdg and sdh are in individual external chassis. sda
and sdb are internal.

The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2

is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:

You need to disable the Ne2k driver in the kernel. Actually, it is a good
idea to disable all unnecessary drivers. http://linnix.com detects and
installs the proper driver for this card.

When I worked in an office and wanted to transfer data to my home system, I
bought a scsi disk, 2 removable frames, 1 disk carrier that fit in the frames,
and a different brand scsi controller than I used for the rest of the system
(in my case I used TekRam DC-390{F,W} controllers for the normal disks, and an
Adaptec 2940UW for the removable disk). I only put the removable disk on the
Adaptec (I may have put the tape and/or cdrom on the chain too, but none of the
other disks), and compiled the adpatec scsi controller as a module. When I
wanted to remove the disk, I unmounted it, and then unloaded the driver
(rmmod). I took the disk out out via the key unlock on the frame, and then
reloaded the scsi controller, which now would not see the disk. I used fairly
expensive metal frames from Connector Resources Unlimited, but you can find
cheaper plastic frames at computer shows.

Some PCI/AGP speeds are locked to the FSB speed. At 100Mhz and above it's
locked at 1/3 & 2/3. Start going above though, and the buses are
overclocked also, which can cause some cards a problem. And the IDE as part
of an overclocked chipset is also above spec, which can cause some HDDs a
problem.

Just my opinion but the SoundBlaster PCI128 and newer work well and are
supported in the 2.2.x kernels.

The agpgart module is a kernel module and needs to be compiled for the kernel
(2.3.x, I don't remember how high). I tried myself but was limited on the time
I had to play around.

The usual problem with combo cards where the ethernet works and the modem does
not is you have to compile in the ability for serial lines to share interrupts
(CONFIG_SERIAL_SHARE_IRQ=y). With at least one revision of pcmcia, I also had
to change the include port line in /etc/pcmcia/config.opts from:

        include port 0x100-0x4ff, port 0x1000-0x17ff

to:

        include port 0x100-0x4ff

in order to make my LinkSys combo card work in my Toshiba Tecra. I haven't
checked if it is still needed with the current sources.

It is the same driver. Pre-compiled modules available at
http://linnix.com.
"/dev/sndstat" is provided by sound.o and soundcore.o, it is there if you
mknod it.
