Hi,

I've recently been there too..

The advice I got was to edit /etc/lilo.conf and add the line
append="mem=128M" (for 128M) somewhere, I added the line directly under
"default=linux", before the boot image lines.

Don't forget to run /sbin /lilo after you have edited the file, and then
reboot.

Date: Fri, 29 Sep 2000 19:25:13 GMT

Hi... I recently completed a pretty happy and successful upgrade from
Redhat 6.2 to Redhat 7.0. It seems ALMOST all of it worked, except that
XFree will no longer start. I am doing a dump of the log file below.
Any assistance would be most appreciated, as right now, I am
essentially stuck doing everything in text mode... Also, could you tell
me if XFree 4.01a is the latest version, or is there something newer?
Does the "a" refer to an older alpha version that somehow shipped with
Redhat 7.0?

My System is using a 21 inch Sony 500 PS Monitor, and an ASUS NVIDIA
TNT2 Ultra Card.

Following is the XFree Log:

Hi there,

1. Did you turn off PnP OS in BIOS? If not make it turn off.
2. Do not expect that modem will on /dev/stty3 as it should be COM4.
In my case I found it as /dev/stty1. Linux grab first available port.
3. Try next script

#!/bin/bash
 #

 for port in "4" "3" "2" "1" "0"
 do
        echo "Checking port => /dev/stty$port"
        setserial {your settings} /dev/stty$port #try to apply settings
        setserial -g /dev/stty$port #read back settings

 done

as only you will see that port accept your setting you just configured
this
port and I guess that it will your modem. Now put setserial command
into you startup scripts and it will stay there permanently.

The one thing I need it the dip switch settings. The one I have has a
localtalk card in it. I know to get it to talk serial again I need to
yank the card and toggle some of the dip switches but I can't find
which.

Is the the CPUID error message one gets with an Athlon chip resolved
with RH7.0? If not, I understand that you can get around that by
setting x86_serial_nr to 1 in LILO, but i noticed that the LILO prompt
on boot up is now GUI driven (i.e. no input fields). Where can you type
this option in LILO?

I ran the sndconfig utility on my mandrake 7.0 distro to try and configure

sound. Also when restarting x I have sound on the desktop and when playing

all I get is faint beeps from the speakers. Is there something I am suppose
to do after I have configured the sound. It obviously works but just can`t

Any info greatly appreciated.

Subject: boca V.34 28.8 puzzle???
Date: Fri, 29 Sep 2000 21:14:49 GMT

Here is the problem that I have: I have an external boca V.34 28.8
modem. It is quite old and I got it from an ebay auction ( which
probably means it can be garbage) . However ,here is what is happening:

1. First , I tried setting it up in Win 98. It just would say that it
cannot recognize it although I see the little lights flashing on the
modem. The interesting part is that when I run hyperterminal and
connect it to COM1, where the modem is.. I can issue direct commands to
the modem.. and it would do what I tell it to. The only problem with
that is that I cannot turn the echo on and now I am typing on a blank
screen and the modem just does what I type. However, if I try to run
Hyperterminal, and try to communicate not with com1 but with the modem,
it wouldn't respond/react at all.

2. In the beginning I thought that the IRQ and port settings of the
modem could be wrong. However, I first found that it works very well in
dos when I issue it direct AT commands.. it would dial, connect ( it
even does the modem screaming sound.. ) . So, for me this means that
the port and irq settings are fine.

3. I tried installing it in SuSe linux 6.2 and had the same problem as
in Win98: it would just fail to detect the modem. There , I also tried
several combinations of IRQ and port settings, however, wvdial would
refuse to recognize it.

So, now I know that the largest part of the modem works ( meaning that
it dials, follows AT commands etc. ) but it seems that it refuses to
respond to the requests sent by the computer ( i.e. would not return
eny error or OK messages in Hperterm )The only thing I can think that
can be wrong is the cable ( which is a brand new belkin cable.. ) .

DOes anybody have an idea of what can be wrong with this modem based
on the information that I have so far ?? I downloaded all the boca
drivers from their website.. but it didn't help. Win98 still refuses to
recognize it. Is there a possibility , where say half of the modem
chip is fried, and the other is not.. SO the intact part is able to
dial up, follow AT commands, but the fried part would refuse to send
info back to the computer. Or do you think this is just a cable
problem ? ??

 Thank you in advance.

Since "lba32" is a superset of "linear", it should be used for both disks.

These are BIOS options, and you are using the same BIOS on both drives.

Please e-mail me if this is not the case.

Subject: DFE-650 PC Card problem

I am having some trouble getting my PC Card to work on my Toshiba
2595CDT laptop. I'm running RH6.2. I know that this card is supported
so I don't think it is a driver issue.

When I boot up - the eth0 initialization fails, but all pcmcia services
seem okay. I think what I
need is to set the alias for eth0 properly in the conf.modules file -
which currently has no alias for eth0.

Or is it that for a PC Card, the gateway device isn't eth0.

Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks.

Geoff

Subject: 3dfx device problem
Date: Sat, 30 Sep 2000 22:04:29 GMT

Hello to everyone,
I've got a little problem with drivers downloaded from Sunsite 3dfx
directory - /contrib/3dfx (I'm using Slackware 7.1)
After recompiling 3dfx device and installing Glide & Mesa for my
voodoo 3 - 3000 AGP card, I can't run the testing program, and I've
got an error message (segmentation fault, can't access Voodoo
3/Banashee board)
Running Quake 2 with 3dfx minidriver causes a multicolor mess on the
screen (when I've running quake with libMesa.so I've similar problem).
I've got one more problem - how to run any of the Mesa demos under DRI
X-server with hardware support, because every time when I trying to
run any of the Mesa demo programs for 3dfx is using X11-soft X
renderer library.
If anyone can help, I would be grateful.
