When I switched to a PS/2 style mouse I had a similar problem. While
searching usenet I found a reply that stated you should try holding down the
left mouse button while X starts.

I gave it a try and it worked. If you haven't tried it already, give it a
run. Might work for ya!

Good luck!

I don't think it is supported openly in linux per se, but I believe that
there is a way to get it working: Boot dos and load the dos yamaha
drivers then use loadlin to boot linux, without rebooting. Failing that,
you could try the 4front drivers, for which you'll need to pay for
(although you can run them on a time-limited trial).

Sorry that my explanation of the dos method isn't very detailed, but
that's all I can remember from a newsgroup post I read about 9 months
ago about the subject (I have the same card).

OK then try using "pump" to initialize the card. That worked for
me once when nothing else would. 6.2 should already have it

That is perhaps the coolest part about my linux system. Nothing is
hidden from me. I can remove whatever I want. I configuration is all
open and available. Its easy to know what needs to be backed up. If
you need to, rebuilding a machine is trivial, and _all_ your setting
just come back. It doesn't decay with use like NT/95/98/(00?).

Helena,

I would not recommend that you get those cheap mechanical KVM switches.
These switches will cause spark and surge when you switch computers.
This might just be the cause of your hung mouse. It may also fry your
systems. I've personally experienced damaged HP laserjet printers with
those mechanical switches before. Also they are subject to wear and
tear. Spend a few more dollars and get a good reliable KVM switch box.
Below are examples of few vendors that you can get your switches from:

- Cybex (http://www.cybex.com)
- Raritan (http://www.raritan.com)
- ROSE Electronics (http://www.rosel.com)

Cheers.

I have SB 128PCI... Running Redhat 6.0 with ES1370 pretty well...
I don't know exactly what happened.. It wasn't too easy to configure.. A
lot of time, when I run

Subject: LS-120 and making a boot floppy
Date: Tue, 11 Apr 2000 16:00:46 GMT
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

My computer that I am running Linux Mandrake 7.0 (AIR) on has *no*
floppy disk drive, but instead an IDE/ATAPI LS-120 drive. Therefore,
there is no device corresponding to /dev/fd0. Instead my "floppy" is
/dev/hda. This is an excerpt from the startup messages (as related by
dmesg):

hda: LS-120 VER4 07 UHD Floppy, ATAPI FLOPPY drive
hdb: SAMSUNG CD-ROM SCR-3231, ATAPI CDROM drive
hdc: Maxtor 90680D4, ATA DISK drive

Nevertheless, this seems to work more or less okay. The contents of
my /etc/fstab are:

/dev/hdc1 /mnt/disk vfat users,noexec,conv=auto 0 0
/dev/hdc5 / ext2 defaults 1 1
/dev/hdc6 swap swap defaults 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 users,noauto,exec,ro 0 0
/dev/ls120 /mnt/ls120 auto users,noauto,exec,conv=auto,rw 0 0

where /dev/cdrom and /dev/ls120 are symbolic links to, respectively,
/dev/hdb and /dev/hda. There are icons on both my gnome and kde
desktops to the LS-120 and CD-ROM and both automount and work just as
one would want when clicked on.

The problem is with formatting floppies (1.4MB 3.5" HD diskettes---I
haven't even tried a 120MB 3.5" UHD diskette yet), and, especially,
creating a boot floppy. fdformat does not appear to want to have
anything to do with the LS-120 drive, and I tried various permutations
of:

mkbootdisk --verbose --device /dev/ls120 <kernel-name>

substituting hda, hda1, etc., for ls120, but all to no avail. I've
tried searching through all the HOWTOs, man pages, info pages, and the
entire /usr/doc hierarchy but I can't seem to find any joy.

Formatting floppies would be useful, but I can always just use VFAT
and format them under DOG/Windoze. What really worries me is not
having a boot floppy and the prospect of something killing LILO.

I have been wondering whether some of the /dev/fd0* files need to
altered or linked perhaps to /dev/hda, but there is no way I am going
to start "experimenting" with anything like that unless I am
absolutely sure I know what I am doing. I hope someone can give me
some advice. Thanks in advance,

Best,

Darren

Hi,

The CMedia 8330 chip works as one SB16 chip (codec ver 4.13) and one MSS card,
once you have configured the PNP stuff.
You can use the standart OSS sb (sb16) and ad1848 (mss) modules.

IMHO the devices listed are the SCSI-Devices attached to the SCSI-Bus
adressed by "Host: scsi0 Channel: 00", so "scsi0" is the
megaraid-controller and Channel "00" the first SCSI-bus on this host.

No exactly true, but close enough for all practical purposes. If the modem
were attached to a digital line, it may well connect at speeds higher than
53333. The USR modems are capable to connecting at higher rates, and have
connect speed messages at or above 60000.

The other side of the equation that David is asking about is not truly
deterministic. That is, at what speed is the data truly arriving into the
system. This all depends on compression by the modem and/or software, and
if the data can be compressed. Modems employ LZ type compression when using
V.42bis, which requires V.42 error checking.

As a matter of general thought, in the modem connects and maintains a
carrier rate of 46666 baud, the average throughput of uncompressible data
will hover around 46666/9 (~5185 bytes/sec), give or take depending on the
protocol employed and its overhead. Zmodem will be slight higher than that
rate, while IP related protocols will be lower.

Subject: Linux laptop recommendations for a year in Spain.

Beginning in August, 2000 I will be spending a year in Spain (normally I
live in the US) and would like recommendations for a laptop for
dual-boot linux/Win 98. This is to replace a Micron Transport XKE (233
MHz, 96MB RAM, 8GB disk) used exclusively with Win98.

The first question is the common one for inexperienced linux users:
which laptops are likely to be provide the most trouble-free linux
installation given my requirements (my dabblings in the past have
exposed me to the pain of graphics and network problems). I have seen
talented post doctoral researchers waste weeks battling installation
issues.

Is there anything to choose between the major vendors in terms of
service availability for warranty repairs and tech. support while I am
in Spain? I will purchase the machine in the US.

System uses:
o Program development in FORTRAN and C++
o Analysis of substantial amounts of data on local and networked hard
drives
o Computation intensive simulation programs
o X-windows display for histograms and relatively simple 3-d graphics
from local and remote computers
o Will be used in association with other linux and SunOS/Solaris systems

o Although I have some Unix (linux, AUX, Solaris, and other OSes)
experience, the less linux admin I need to remember on a daily basis,
the better (I hope this heresy will not dissuade this group's
contributors from helping me!) .
o 100 baseT network compatibility
o Web browser (preferably Netscape), used for IMAP email access.
o ftp server/client for data transfer
o No email, web, news serving
o No high-end gaming (video/audio) requirements
o Win98 => the usual Microsoft products, some graphics

Hardware requirements:
o >500 MHz, 128 MB RAM
o >12 GB disk (bigger = better, if performance is good and no partition
issues)
o 13"/14" TFT screen (typically attached to external monitor)
o Can drive external 19" color monitor (e.g. ViewSonic G790).
o 100 base-T ethernet, 56k modem (US and Europe compatible - is there a
difference?)
o Must run in desktop mode i.e. almost continuously
o Light would be nice ...
o Battery power lifetime secondary

Many thanks for any suggestions you can offer.
Regards,
Bob Wilson
