My SCSI card works now. How did I do it ?
A) with pnpdump I have created a file /etc/isapnp.conf
B) in that file I have enabled/changed the following lines
from
# (IO 0 (SIZE 32) (BASE 0x0340) (CHECK))
# IRQ 9, 10, 11 or 12.
# High true, edge sensitive interrupt
# (INT 0 (IRQ 11 (MODE +E)))
# End dependent functions
(NAME "ADP1505/849934698[0]{SCSI Controller }")
#(ACT Y)
to
(IO 0 (SIZE 32) (BASE 0x0340) (CHECK))
# IRQ 9, 10, 11 or 12.
# High true, edge sensitive interrupt
(INT 0 (IRQ 11 (MODE +E)))
# End dependent functions
(NAME "ADP1505/849934698[0]{SCSI Controller }")
(ACT Y)
C) I did run /sbin/isapnp manually for the first time
( it is done automagicaly after you reboot the computer)
D) I did run /sbin/modprobe manually for the first time
/sbin/modprobe aha152x aha152x=0x340,11,7,1,1
E) I have added to /etc/rc.d/rc.local the following lines
( please pay attention to the 'dot' at the beginning if the line )
. /etc/rc.d/init.d/functions
action "" modprobe aha152x aha152x=0x340,11,7,1,1
I am running RH6.2 right now. It works as a champ.
I am able to burn my CDs without any problem.

I got a second scsi card that came with my AcerScan 620S scanner. It is
recognized by linux kernel 2.2.14 as an acard aec671x. It reports the
scanner all right, but when I try to access it via
"scanimage -d snapscan:/dev/sg3", the driver runs into a
kernel panic with message "Fooooood fight!".
I have located the message in the driver source in
/usr/src/linux/drivers/scsi/atp870u.c and it has to do with
determining the transfer size length of something:
(sgpnt[i].length == 0) condition.
Why would it be zero? And what can I change for it to work?
A simple scanning for scanners works all right:
find-scanner: found scanner "Color FlatbedScanner_9 0117" at device /dev/sg3
only when I try to do a scanimage, it screws up.
I have included 5 sections of logfile output and kernel source snipplet at the
end of the email.
Any hint on what I could do to fix it would be welcome,
I already tried commenting out the panic, but then scanimage does die with
a floatpoint error. The scanner never moves. (But of course it works fine under
win98)

I managed to get hold of Doug Ledford, he pointed me at the "noapic"

Bit hard that one - it's an on-board SCSI adapter... anyway problem's
solved now - hopefully yours is too ;-)

This is called UDI (Universal Driver Interface).
I guess, it won't be in the interest of everyone involved to support

Go to YAST/Choose install packages/Change create configuration/xsrv
Make sure the appropriate server is installed (might be s3virge, but I don't
have either SuSE 6.4 or this video card, so I am guessing).
If you have the correct server installed then I suspect sax will configure X

ASUS and Gigabyte both make excellent products, as does Tyan. I've used all

I have owned a plextor scsi cdrom for a long time. It has worked well. So I
thought I would give the brand another try. They are well known in the scsi

What I meant to say was will I be able to install software from a cd if this is my
only cdrom.
Why would I think it will not work.... Alot of stuff does not work in linux. It
depends on how cooperative the company is with the open source thing. Plus linux
was not listed on the spec sheet I was looking at. (even thought three other
unix's were)

Hey there,
I've got an Aztech Sound Galaxy 16 ISA "PnP" soundcard in my system and
compiled all the sound modules. In the help files it said most Galaxy 16
cards weren't actually pnp but they would work with a rom that remembered
the addresses so it would be just like jumpers... Now when I try to modprobe
sgalaxy.o I get an error device or resource busy and this is the only error
it gives me...
Anyone got any experience with this type of card or does anyone know of a
possible solution for this prob?
Kind regards,

SMP support is greatly improved in the recent kernels, so go for a
recent distribution. IIRC Redhat includes the SMP kernel as an option
in their installation. Some other distributions require you to build a
new kernel with SMP enabled before they will use two processors.
Where motherboards are concerned, I'm running a Gigabyte BXDS in my
home machine, but if I were building one professionally I would
probably go for one of the Asus boards.
Just my preferences,
Keith.

In the old YaST ( config program for Suse ) which should still be there
You should select:
System Administration --> Integrate Hardware into System --> Configure
Networking Device
There you should be able to select the card from the menu, you should
also be able to
input some options for the module there if the card's fixed at 0x300 and
irq 0x5 then you should
place:
io=0x300 irq=5
there
Select OK, and exit yast,
type
rcnetwork start
at the prompt
Your Card should be recognised
further options can be selected in Yast:
System Administration --> Network Configuration
If the card is isa-pnp then you should send another mail so I can
explain that ;-)
I hope this will help,

I'll tell you my story with the ABit BP6 and a newly bought 128 MB PC133
module. At first, when Installed in the computer together with 1 32 Mb and 1
64 Mb module everything went fine. Ok, some random crashes in win98, but hey
what did I expect from it..? ;-)
Next day, booting up computer. Trying to install win2k. Install hangs after
a few minutes... Over and over again, but every time at different places.. I
think it has to do with the bad dimm.. I took out the other two old modules,
and placed the newly bought module in dimmslot 1.. No boot, long lasting
beeps from speaker.. Takes out the memory.. Put in the other modules, which
I thought was good.. No boot, same error message. I took the computer to a
friend of mine who is quite handy with hardware.. He thought it was a bios
problem.. I leave it up to him to do whatever was necessary to get it up
running.. Probably just have to reflash bios in an external programmer he
said... Coming back after about an hour he had found the fault.. The
agp-slot had hung in some strange state.. So booting with an old ISA worked
like a charm..
Reassembling the computer at home I put in the good 96 Mb of ram. Booting up
computer and installing win2k just fine.. Now I just got my 128 Mb module
returned and I'm running win98/win2k/slackware 7 happily at 224 Mb of
memory. Maybe I should say that at first I thought it was the old modules
that didn't cope with me overclocking to 92 MHz fsb... The 32 dimm was pc66,
the 64 a pc100, and now the 128 a pc133.. Works just fine. 2x400 MHz at
2x552 MHz.
Don't really know what you could learn from this, but my friends told me
that maybe the dimm wasn't bad after all, just that the agp-slot had hung. I
don't know and I don't really care much about it know either, cause it runs
just fine now!
Hope you will find a solution to the problem. If you take out the first
dimm, only booting with the memory you suspect is faulty, it probably won't
go through post, unless you enable quick post at startup in bios. My guess
only though..
Regards, Hugo

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'm considering getting one of the AMI Megaraid 428 cards that are
going cheap, and putting my two IBM Ultrastar 4.5gig LVD (U2W) drives
on it.
Does anyone have any experience with a similar setup? Concerns are:
1. According to the AMI page, the Megaraid card is Ultra SCSI, not
U2W. "LVD disks will only work if they are backward compatible
and can be set to single-ended mode, and the disk firmware allows
for running in that mode or slower modes." I'm not sure how to be
absolutely sure the IBM disks conform to that description!
2. Has anyone used "Generic" or "House Brand" true parity SIMMS (for
cache) with this RAID card, instead of the approved brands ("PNY,
SEC, Tanisys, Micron Technologies, Advantage, Unigen, and
Centon")?
Any reports welcome.

Rohan.
