Sounds like a kernel bug. Ask the maintainer of the particular
SCSI driver(s) that were involved (reporting the situation more
clearly).
> Which device is described by "device sd(x,y)"
ls -l /dev/ | grep "8,[ ]*6"
(/dev/sda6). I give the command so you can find out the device name
of any other similar messages that you get.

mount -o remount,ro / && e2fsck -f /dev/sda6
(or, boot from a rescue floppy or CD and then run the fsck from
there, or reboot with init=/bin/sh and run fsck from there --- while
/ is mounted read-only).

I have to disagree with you on 3COM. I have found them overpriced and
underperformers for the most part. Further, their support sux and they
refuse to support Linux in any way; they have their nose firmly buried in
Bill's anus.
Don't support them by buying their overpriced and undersupported NICs or
garbage win-modems.

There is a great recommendation!
The Linksys LNE100TX runs less than $15 (sometimes less) and runs on the
stock tulip driver shipped with all recent distro's. Further, Linksys
actively supports Linux and the development of drivers for their products.

I would recommend you stay clear of many of the ne2000 clones floating
around - they are poor performers and sometimes very hard to get running.
Just one guy's opinion.

Are you getting "unresolved symbols" when depmod -a? Try this: backup your
.config file, run make mrproper, restore .config file, then make oldconfig
dep clean, then build kernel again, then modules.

My / is 2.2 Gig. Recently I was running out of space, so I went to /tmp
and deleted the ~600 Meg cdrom image that was sitting there. You would
think that would help, but no, now that space seems totally unusable to
me. Df says I'm using 1.96 gig out of 2.12. Du, on the other hand, can
only count 1.49 gig worth of files on /. Fsck claims the disk is happy,
though I've seen two "ide resets" in the logs.
Any idea what I can do to reclaim the gap?

HELP!!!!!!
Ahem.... OK, I guess you'd like something a little more specific, huh? :)
I'm running Mandrake 7.1 with a stock 2.2.17 kernel (slightly patched for
IDE and Win4Lin), a TNT2 AGP video card, and XFree 4.0.1
I downloaded the newst i2c and bttv code and patched my kernel with no
problems, and I compiled everything as modules as the README suggested.
Everything seems good so far. Then I ran MAKEDEV in the bttv source
tree, and it created the /dev entries without problem. I then add the
following entries to /etc/conf.modules per the bttv instructions:
# i2c
alias char-major-89 i2c-dev
options i2c-core i2c_debug=1
options i2c-algo-bit bit_test=1
#bttv
alias char-major-81 videodev
alias char-major-81-0 bttv
options bttv card=10 radio=1
options tuner debug=1
#make alsa + msp3400 play nicely
options snd-card-ens snd_index=0
options msp3400 mixer=1
But then I discover kwintv won't compile, giving me errors about not
finding iostream.h fstream.h and strstream.h. Whatever. So I grabbed the
0.7.99 RPM from the cooker site and installed it as an RPM. No problems
or dependency issues. But when it starts, it gives me "error loading
shared libraries: kwintv: undefined symbol: DPMSQueryExtension"
So I decide to try xawtv instead. It compiles and starts without a
problem, but the picture is AWFUL - black & white, grainy, severe
ghosting, and rolling - and there is no sound.
Does ANYBODY have this beast working under Mandrake?
I repeat: HELP!!!!! :)

Dammit, i'm having to retype this letter (damn mail server) so please
forgive me if i forgot anything
I'm running a celeron 533, 128 ram, and using an ATI all in wonder 128 (RAGE
128)
Slackware linux version (the newest one whatever it is, 7.something i think)
and the X that came with that (i beleive it was the newest 3.x before the
4.whatever).
i selected my video card from the list in xf86config, and i chose the
X_SVGA (maybe spelt that way) server that that selection suggested.
i finally got X working, but when i start it, the fonts are missed. if i
start it with xinit (it starts with only 1 term window open) the fonts are
messed in that. My keyboard setup i correct because i can run my programs,
even thought i can't see what i'm typing or doing.
If i run startx (loading GNOME), ALL the fonts are messed up. every one of
them. and its not even a consistent messed up. it's as if something is
corrupted, because it looks like my computer is trying to play barcode
warrior. All the fonts show barcode lookalikes. IF i type the same thing
twice, it'll look different. if i click a dropdown menu, its messed, if i
click it again, its messed a different way. The only thing which mnesses up
is the font. the display otherwise is great. graphics, windows, etcetcetc.
Thanks in advance,

You're missing my point. When you reference your CDRW, you won't call it
/dev/hdx. You will call it /dev/scdx or /dev/srx. That's how scsi devices
(even emulated ones) are named when using a CD or CDRW.

Yeah, I kind of figured that. I was just wondering if there were any nerds
(that's in the polite and complimentary sense of the word) out there who may
have been in the same position I am in (I'm sort of stuck with that thing.)
and messed around with the modem enough so that they knew enough to write a
module for it.

The 3.3.6 server distributed by XFree86 was faulty when it came to the Rage 128 cards.
There is a good rpm from Mandrake for the Rage 128 cards available somewhere out
there.
To install that package you'll have to install RPM if you don't already have it.
However, my first suggestion would be to upgrade to XFree86 4.0.1 since there is *much*
better support for the Rage 128 cards under the 4.0.* series than in the 3.3.* series.

I have a Visor Handspring that uses the USB cradle.. I saw somewhere
that if you insert the module 'usb-serial' then it will translate the
serial connection expected by the sync program to USB expected by the
handspring.
I am using Mandrake 7.1 and I tried using the pilot configuration
section in the GNOME configuration program. I've linked /dev/pilot to
/dev/usb/ttyUSB1. I also start the handspring sync'ing before I tell
the computer to go. The messages log sees the handspring and says it's
good to go for hotsync on ttyUSB1. The gnome program tries to get the
palm username information from the device, but nothing ever seems to
happen... Apparantly the handspring times out before anything happens...
Can someone help???
