Had the same problem - found an interesting answer (maybe)
try 'hdparm -i /dev/hda' to find the value of "MultSect" - then do
'hdparm -mX' where X is the value of MultSect - once I set this, I haven't
had a single error like this. I haven't been able to get DMA activated
though - crashes hard.

I've owned many SONY VAIO laptops but have never heard of
the XR7. SONY made the PCG 700 series, 800, 505, F series &
C1X. Latest addition is the XG. Most used the ESS chipset
for sound, but I do recall that some used Yamaha. It's most
likely that you've a problem with IRQ/DMA settings---
particularly a conflict with the internal modem. Also, the
ESS driver can be problematic on some models, so you need
to run sndconfig & choose SB16 compatible.
Repost with correct model# and I'm sure I can help. I have
a PCG-812, PCG 838, C1X, N505 & just got an XG-19. All run
linux flawlessly.

Thank you for the detailed explanation. Does this also suggest that
clocking the KX133 chipset at 133Mhz, which would not be over-clocked

In order to begin my quest into the world of linux I need to ditch my
aztechMDP3900 winmodem and get a hardware modem. I was looking at the
Actiontec PCI56012-01CW. I need to yank the aztech PCI anyway so I
figured I would just go with another PCI. I have also looked at the
external version of the Actiontec. Has anyone used either of my choices

Hello, I've just gotten a HP 9110i CD-RW and I'm about to pull my hair
out trying to get it to work in linux :P .
I followed the CD-Writing Howto as best as I could to the following
effect:

pre-install sg modprobe ide-scsi

The above is for a Debian, potato system, running kernel 2.2.14.

I am able to mount the cdrom as 'mount -t iso9660 /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom'.
But then I get the most unusual errors. I am able to list directories
with 'ls', the results show only directory structure, and occasionally a
few files.
I can then "cd" to another directory. I am unable to list actual
files. When looking at a debian cdrom for instance, I do not see *.deb
files where they should be.
An unusual thing I've found is that I can "find /mnt/cdrom -name *.deb",
and then am able to see the *.deb's in the "ls" listings. Attempts to
actually access the .deb file result in I/O errors. A copy from dmesg
with some of the errors just from perusing the directory tree are as
follows:
ISO 9660 Extensions: Microsoft Joliet Level 1
ISO 9660 Extensions: RRIP_1991A
SCSI CD error : host 0 id 0 lun 0 return code = 28000000

SCSI CD error : host 0 id 0 lun 0 return code = 28000000
CD-ROM I/O error: dev 0b:00, sector 208
I decided to see if my CD-RW drive may be defective (had no other good
ideas), so I backed out all of the SCSI options, and pretended this was
just a regular IDE CD-ROM, the drive worked perfectly well as a
/dev/hdc, and files were easily accessed and used.
At a friend's suggestion, I went to www.kernel.dk and downloaded their
latest CD-ROM drivers and patched my 2.2.14 kernel, and remade with the
above kernel options. The above behavior returned as from before I'd
patched the kernel. I've played with numerous combinations of Module vs
Built-In's in the Kernel to no net effect.
I'm at a loss, and any help would be appreciated. Trying it in a
Windows machine isn't an option, I don't have a single Windows partition
on any of my machines at home.
Thank you very much for your time and help.
Gary Lowder.

As a general rule of thumb, external modems are going to be much better
than internal modems to use with linux. Especially when you're talking
about PCI modems, they seem to cause the worst problems for people tring to
get them going (aside from the winmodems - different story).
I finally broke down and got an external ZOOM 56K modem some 6 months ago
or so after an internal modem died. I didn't know what I'd been missing.
It is sometimes possible to get your modem 'hung' in a state that you can't
hang it up, and it won't recognize input. With an external modem, no
problem, you hit the off switch, then turn it back on and the problem is
solved. If you've an internal, the solution is a cold reboot - not
something many *nix users like to do ;) .
So, go for the external, you plug it in to a serial port on your box, and
it works, no fuss.
Gary.

I don't know anything about KDAT, but try running something simple
first just to see if you can access the drive.
For example,
mt -f /dev/nst0 tell
tar cf /dev/nst0 .
Read the man pages for mt and tar to see what these do.
Formatting shouldn't be the issue. The drive will format new
tapes by itself.
If tar and mt don't work, make sure your SCSI bus is terminated,
make sure the device id for your tape drive isn't the same as
the device id for your cd (or anything else).
Also, look through /var/log/messages for all the bootup stuff and
see if you see anything about an "archive" device.
Good luck.

attach the PS/2 adapter and plug it into your PS/2 port. :)
If you still insist on using it in USB mode, do the following:
Read the USB howto.
To make things easier compile the USB componants needed for mouse into the kernel,
reduces the complexity a bit to not have to worry about modules.
You need the following items for mouse to work:
Support for USB
UHCI OR OHCI-HCD support
USB HID support
Mouse support
/proc/bus/usb support
Preliminary USB device filesystem
Compile these into the kernel, don't mess with modules till you can get it working.
then:
mkdir /dev/usb
mknod /dev/usb/usbmouse0 c 13 32
Then point everything to /dev/usb/usbmouse0.
