Subject: Problems with HighPoint HPT366 Ultra ATA/66 and RedHat 6.2
Date: Tue, 18 Apr 2000 09:47:48 +0200

Hello!

I have a problem installing RedHat 6.2 on my PC: Soyo MB SY-6BA+
V( http://www.soyo.nl/product/6ba+iv.htm ) with 4 ide connectors (1-4): 2
standard Ultra/33IDE channels and 2 channels Ultra/66 from HPT366 Ultra
ATA/66 onboard, PII Celeron 466, 64MB SDRAM, Quantum Fireball lct10
15GB/Ultra66 hooked as master on IDE 3 (first of HPT) and Sony CDU-311 ATAPI
hooked up as master on IDE 2 (second of standard Ultra/33).
The kernel 2.2.14-5.0 that comes with RH6.2 doesn't recognize the HPT366
and reports that no device to install on is present.
I tried tweaking the boot params as explained in UltraDMA-HOWTO, but I
managed only to get the disk reported as hdc, and then the installation
freezes.
Then I put the Quantum as master on IDE 2 instead of the CD, moved the
CD to slave on the same channel and managed to install everything, but the
disk is working now as Ultra/33, and the HPT366 is still not recognized.
After that I tried to patch the kernel source with the ide patches
(patch -p1 < pathces/ide....patch), but I always get rejects because I don't
have "HDIO_GETGEO_BIG' defined in hdreg.h. I expected that the patch will
insert that. I tried all the patches, starting from ide-2.2.14-9, the first
closest to my version, but still without success.
Am I doing something wrong or is there maybe some modification that has
to be done manually? I didn't find any docs about this...
I planned to try compiling and installing 2.3.99-pre5, I saw that the
hdreg.h is OK there, but I'm not sure if this kernel version is stable
enough...
Please send me a copy of your comments on my e-mail.

Thank you for your help.

Subject: PnP sound card: no sound ...
Date: Tue, 18 Apr 2000 10:15:30 +0200

On a (self-assembled) i486 I installed SuSE Linux 6.2. So far I didn't
succeed in making the sound card work. I tried isapnp and the oss
utility; oss complained about something like "Generic ALS not
supported", and isapnp detected "conflicts" like:
"... resource conflict allocating 16 bytes of IO at ..."
"... Error occured executing request <IORESCHECK> -- further action
aborted"
pnpdump detects the card as "ALS100 Media Audio Controller".

In /proc I didn't find any conflicts, or maybe I looked at the wrong
entries?
Which /proc files could help detect those conflicts?

TIA

You don't need to install Dos but you need to
boot your machine to Dos using a Dos system
floppy disk. If you don't have any then find a
computer somewhere running Dos or Windows 9X
put in a floppy disk and type (from a Dos prompt
if using Windows) sys a: and hit Enter
Dos anwers "system transferred"

copy the bios flash program to this floppy and
then use this floppy to boot your PC, start the bios
flash program direct from the floppy, upgrade your
bios BEE CAREFUL, READ THE HELP FILES
BEFORE YOU DO THIS!
and voila! your bios is upgraded!

Hope this helps :)

We are having problems with some Red Hat 6.1 machines in our
organization. These machines are attached to our NT-network through
Intel EtherExpress cards with the 82557 chipset. The network throughput
is ok until we shutdown the Linux machines. Somehow the network becomes
unbearably slow. We only telnet out to our big unix servers from these
linux machines, so it's not something like clients trying to reach
them... Anybody got any idea what's going on here?
Thanks in advance for any answers.

Marco

As I recall -- it was ~15 years ago and I wasn't directly involved -- its
selling point was ROMs designed to support both Sys V and BSD system calls.
Not sure if you could mix both in a single process, but I believe you could
have processes of both sorts running simultaneously.

Yes, this is correct.

This is not correct.

The VIA KX-133 Chipset still uses 100MHz on the FSB, since the Processor
is not (yet) designed for more. The advantage is, this chipset can run
the Memory on a different speed than the processor: You can choose
betwenn 100MHz and 133MHz clock rate on the memory-bus. This can give
you some extra speed for memoryaccess if you have PC-133 RAMs. I have
PC-100 Memory from Siemens/Infineon overclocked to 133 MHz without any
Problems, but this is not really recommended :-)

Note, that the now-selling series of the Athlon Processor _always_ runs
at 100MHz FSB, but transferring data twice per Cycle.
Some Manufacturers, also call this "Double Data Rate" (DDR)
This term is mosty used for DDR-RAM, which use essentially the same
mechanism.

I've got this Toshiba Tecra 750, and a Madge 16/4 Token Ring adapter (as
well as a Noteworthy Token Ring adapter) and RH 6.2.

I can't seem to get these guys to work together.

Has anybody managed to make a similar combination work?

I'd really appreciate any tips on where to look or what to do.

Btw, I've already installed the pcmcia stuff from Hind, and I've already
grabbed the drivers from www.madge.com. The drivers from madge were
published in Nov 99 and they're for an older kernel. The binaries fail and
the source code has errors I can't resolve.

Am I doomed to never use token ring (or even ethernet) on my linux/toshiba
setup? :) Do I have to install windoze?
