Subject: PC hangs when i'm usig two ethernet cards: conflict with IDE controller.
Date: Tue, 10 Oct 2000 16:05:53 -0500
Hi, everybody.
I have SuSE 6.4 installed on my PC.
I have to use two ethernet cards in my system, so when i put them together
it hangs on IDE probe.
(i see only first IDE's addresses and irq number).
I have put some tracing in drivers/block/ide-probe.c and found out that it
hangs on restore_flags(..) function
which allows interrupts.
Looks like i have problem with resource allocation on my PC. I thought it is
my PCI-bios's setup problem, but
it ever hangs if second card is ISA. (I tried 3 different types of PCI
ethernet cards).
Looks like ide-probe.c allocates resource and turns on interrupt from board
and nobody clears them?
Did anybody have same problem? May be i should setup something in kernel
config to avoid that.
With one card (any of them) it works fine. I can send PCI config if anybody
interested.
Thank for help.

Hi,
how Do I enable the TV output mode on a VGA card that has an TV output
connector?
I tried the cards Elsa Winner 2000 Office which uses Permedia 2 chipset,
and I tried Asus AGP-V3800 TVR, which uses the TNT2 chipset.
Both cards by default have the TV output disabled. No signal comes out
of the connector.
I would be very thankful for the slightest hint that could allow me to
find out how to enable it.
Thank you very much in advance.
Best regards

I agree -- cdrecord -scanbus and cdrecord -inq are, in my experience,
essential for initial configuration. Good luck with you HP - it will
work eventually.

It does not matter what front-end you use if cdrecord is not
configured properly, no? I suggest doing cdrecord -scanbus
and looking for scsibus, target, lun triple associated with
your burner. Then make sure this information is properly
entered in /etc/cdrecord.conf

Hi,
How is SCSI U160 support under the current (2.2.17) kernel release?
I'm thinking of getting an Adaptec 29160 scsi controller and a
U160 disk -- no mention on the HW compatibility howto, nor have
there been any comments on the Linux groups that I've seen...
TIA,

It depends if the SCSI emulation is working - note, too, that you
can mount the cdrom (as ide) by typing mount /cdrom because device
/dev/cdrom most likely has an entry in /etc/fstab. You will need to
specify a mount point for /dev/scd0 (or, point the symlink /dev/cdrom
at /dev/scd0. That is, you must mount /dev/scd0 with the command
mount /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom (mount [device] [mount point]).
This is all assuming the SCSI emulation is working and you have
a device /dev/scd0. It will work eventually. :)

I found a 2.5 gig 68 pin IBM SCSI for $20 on eBay - 6-connector cable
for $12 at http://www.stsi.com under SCSI cables. MS Windows is
available all over the place - good luck spending less than $95 on it.

A K6-2 400 mhz can be run almost at full speed, sometimes.
Set the multiplier to 2, and the CPU will interpret this as 6.
6 * 66 = 396.
YMMV.

You might start by explaining what "still doesn't work" means in more
detail. Also explain just what configuration changes you made in your
kernel, and what modules you are trying to use. What do you get when you do
a cdrecord -scanbus? What modules are loaded when you do an lsmod?

Yes, I have my cdrom as the master on the secondary IDE channel as /dev/hdc,
and my HP 9300i as the slave on that channel. It's known as /dev/sr0, or
/dev/scd0, depending on whether I want to just use is as a CD, or a CDRW.

I believe that you need to get the ide patch and rebuild the Kernel to
fully support this board.
I was using Kernel 2.2.16 with the patch which is available at:
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/hedrick/ide-2.2.16.all/ide.2.2.16.all.20000825.patch.gz
The Board works fine, it is what I am using. Remember that you need to
use LBA. If you boot of this board it appears that "lilo.conf" needs
the global parameter "linear".

hi there,
Dummy V got a new trouble recently.
I accidently deleted isapnp.conf and isapnp.conf.bak. well, it
affected my system by that the sound system still worked fine but i
couldn't configure the sound setting by neither setup nor sndconfig
anymore. everytime i tried these programs and after it probed the sound
chip and ready to stepped further, the program crashed. everytime.
and one more thing, everytime i listened to mp3 and then closed the
xmms, the cpu power was still mostly busy, which is abnormal to my
system. i guessed it's the problem of the resource management related to
isapnp.
is there any command that i can generate the isapnp.conf file again.
because the sound still works fine, i believe that the isapnp setting is
still in some part of the system. if not, any better idea you guys could
advice me?

Yes. Ghost copied your entire partition, including the superblock, and all
the inode information.
>If so, is there a way to fix it without loosing everything?
Boot back into your previous configuration. Mount the new partition on some
handy mountpoint, say /mnt. Then, cd to the root directory and
tar -X /mnt -cf - . | (cd /mnt ; tar -xpf - )
You'll have to boot your system from a boot floppy specifying your new
partition as the root, then re-run lilo before you'll be able to boot off of
the new disk.
