I just installed Linux on my box and set it up to dual boot into win98.
I was able to boot linux and run it fine. I also was able to reboot
into windows. However the next time I rebooted out of linux I couldn't
boot in to anything. I got an error saying "Stage 1 Hard Drive Error"
and then it did nothing. Does anyone know what this is and how to fix
it?

Which version of Linux have you installed?
Win98 was-it the first on your hard disk?

Subject: Newbie query - UDMA system - problem with Mandrake 8.0 & RH7.1 installs
Date: Mon, 30 Apr 2001 21:22:04 +1200

Hi all . First the (hopefully relevant!) config info for my PC -

Current OS - Win98SE ( trying to ditch , but having problems , that's why
I'm here ... )
  Chip - PIII 533Mhz
  Monitor - Philips 105S
  CD drive- Asus CD-3400A
Modem - LT Winmodem (yes - will have no 'net under Linux - will replace
this with the modem from my old PC which no longer goes ... :-)
IRQs for UDMA are as follows -
IRQ14 - VIA bus master PCI IDE controller (Ultra DMA)
IRQ14 - Primary bus master IDE controller (dual fifo)
IRQ15 - VIA bus master PCI IDE controller (Ultra DMA)
IRQ15 - Secondary bus master IDE controller (dual fifo)

The story so far - when I tried the installs , the Linux installers
(both for Mandrake 8.0 and RH7.1) seem to be unable to detect my hard drive.
CD drive is found, no problem. Hard drive - no go ..... Tried Mandrake
8.0 first - no luck . Tried Red Hat 7.1 - ditto . The error message zooms
past , but it says something like "unable to find a valid device to install
filesystem onto .. "
I've poked around on the 'net a bit (have been to
http://linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/Ultra-DMA-7.html#unified and one or two
other places ) , but haven't yet come across the info needed to get me up
and running. I should say that I ain't a hardware guru, so any advice may
need to bear that in mind ! :-)) . Very many thanks for any help received !

Hi,
I have just upgrated my linux (Mdk 7.2 -> Mdk 8). Before everything was
ok but now i have a big problem.

Before to explain it, This is my Configuration :
Dell Laptitude with PCMCIA Xircom (Ethernet + modem card), wtih three
kernels (2.4.3 and 2.2.19-10 from Mdk 8 and 2.2.17-21 from Mdk 7.2)

The problem :
Under kernels 2.4.3 and 2.2.19-10 my ethernet card does not work (but it
works with the 2.2.17 kernel). With the 2.4.3 kernel the system writes
that it can not load ds.o.gz module, and it displays the following error
messages :
init_module : operation not permitted
Hint:insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters,
inluding invalid IO or ICQ parameters

When I read the /var/log/message file I have the following errors :

If i well understand, there are IRQ conflicts between the USB HUb and
the PCMCIA card. How to resolve this problem ?

If somebody can help me?

Thank you for advance.

PS :
In my computer, i have installed Windows 98 too, and under this system i

XIRCOM 11 1000-107F

Can we use this parameters to solve the problem. If yes, how ?

I have an onstream tape device (IDE) and downloaded the driver from the
onstream sight. I have used RH 6.0, 6.1, 6.2, 7.2 and SuSE up to version
7.1, but I find that the onstream is not reliable.

I can write small amounts of data with no problems, but with larger amount
of data (>500M) tends to give read errors.

Any ideas.

Check your network is up and running (ifconfig).
Also look at the log files, for example

    /etc/rc.d/init.d/smb stop - stop samba
rm -f /var/log/samba/* - get rid of log files
    /etc/rc.d/init.d/smb start - start samba

Now look at the log files. Also consider increasing the debug level, I
think you use debug level = nn in the smb.conf file.

I'm particularly fond of Matrox's gear (I have a G400, but it would be a
G450 nowadays). Decent cards, well supported both in Windows and linux.
Superb 2D quality, and good enough 3D-wise to at least play the most
recent games with (although there are obviously other cards you can get
much better framerates and resolutions with, but the G450 has pretty
cool 3D effects that you don't see on the framerate gushers)
And although they're not cheap, they also don't cost piles of money.

Oh, that's easy. If they don't press a key in over twenty
minutes, you go to a blank screen until they press a key.
If they don't notice the blank screen in ten minutes, they're
not looking at it, so you automatically reset the terminal.

Page, screen, menu, record, file, function, whatever. I was
trying to be general, since obviously the precise content of
the CRT display will vary from application to application.

Well, as a point of reference...

[root@pedestrian /root]# hdparm -Tt /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffer-cache reads: 128 MB in 5.34 seconds = 23.97 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 30.57 seconds = 2.09 MB/sec
[root@pedestrian /root]#

This is on an older system, a Pentium 90 IIRC, that functions as
my router. The hard drive is a Quantum, about 700 MB IIRC.

I find it odd that my buffer-cache reads are so much worse
than yours but my buffered disk reads are better. But I'm
not clear on the difference.

Best option is to attach the drives to the standard onboard ide
controller and install the operating system. Then upgrade to kernel
2.4.x or add the ide-patches from www.linux-ide.org to a 2.2.x kernel.
Compile the kernel, and after you determine that the kernel is working
correctly and detecting the promise controller switch the cables to
the promise controller.

Make sure that you check the option in the kernel to use second ide
controller first. See the ide.txt under in
/usr/src/linux/Documentation for details.

Another option is check to see if you caldera will allow you to make a
custom kernel for installation. Make a kernel with promise ide
support, and install. This is your only option if you only have
a promise ide controller. The distribution that I used allowed this
option.

Good luck.

Look in the smb.conf file, there is a section to enable encrypted passwords.
You need to then do

    smbpasswd -a username

So samba knows the password.
