I suspect you're right - my cursory glance at /proc/parport/0 told me
everything was fine, but a slightly less exhausted eye noticed that Linux
was failing to assign either an IRQ or DMA to the port. I've got the BIOS
configuring the port for me...am I missing something?

Yeah, I caught that in the HOWTO - it *was* missing initially, but it's long
been corrected to no avail.

Thanks - if you've got any suggestions as to why the IRQ and DMA assignments
are failing to show, they'd be appreciated...but in any event, you've given
me someplace to look.

I installed Linux with my SCSI JAZ drive powered down, so during the
installation it was not accounted for. Now, if I start Linux with the
JAZ drive on, I'm unable to run Linux.

I am able to start it with the root=/dev/sdd2 (root is /dev/sdc2 by
default), but basically any mappings to the original partition are now
incorrect.

Someone has suggested I make the JAZ SCSI ID greater than the Linux hard
drive SCSI ID, but I don't think this will help since they are on
different controllers.

Is there *any* way around this without reinstalling Linux? I have
several days' setup invested in my current installation.

Thanks

Which modem would you suggest for the easiest install

Hi Mathias,

there is a thread going at utah-glx.sourceforge.net then click on devel
archive.

My personal recommendation would be a G400. But read the posts there.
There are a couple of different opinions issued.

In my system (Athlon 500) the Matrox is pretty fast performing nice with
a 1152x864 resolution. Quake is hyper fast if you clock your mga with
mgaclock to
win settings.

I have a very positive impression from using a Matrox G400.

I have used tnt2 and 3dfx Voodoo3 2000 also. But the G400 is in my
personal opinion the best choice.

For driver support please see also the dri project at
dri.sourceforge.net and get an impression of what is supported right
now.

Best regards

Hi there,

I am looking into performance comparisons with different sound cards.
Is there any difference using different sound cards, ie. interupt
frequency, processor time spend or whatsoever.

Please cc me if possible.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Perhaps. I don't usually buy bare drives from the manufacturer. I buy
them from dealers. They probably format the drive as a part of
pre-shipment testing.

But even when I've occasionally bought bare drives, they came
partitioned with something in place. I usually end up having to blow
away the factory partitions anyway - since they're usually no bigger
than 2G (maximum FAT-16 size), but there has always been something
present.

I don't buy pre-built systems, so that's not it....

PCTel will work for 2.2 and 2.4. Lucent will work for 2.2 only, until they
release a 2.4 driver. All other software modem will not work on Linux.
Drivers available at http://linnix.com.

As this someone suggested (yes that was me!) change the scsi ID's. Have
you even tried it?

There's no need for that, change the ID's and all listings will be
correct again. If you always want to keep the JAZZ on, change the fstab
entries to point to their /dev/sdd equivalents.

You hit the nail on the head, just don't need ECC on home user
system, and it's actually slower than non-ECC. I've got a stick of
old CL2 pc100 (mosel vitelic, 8ns) and a newer stick of CL2 pc133
(cruical/micron, 7ns), both running at 135mhz cas2-3-3. I overclock
a p3-450 to 608 mhz on a 6ba+III. I recommend cas2 ram mostly for
2 reasons, always buy the best ram you can afford, and cas2 - nonECC
oc's better :)

Both the 128mb sticks I mention above will run 'memtest86' till
the cows come home, L2 disabled, at 155mhz cas3-3-3, 0 errors !! Now
the main reason that's possible is my Soyo provides 3.54 IO voltage
to the ram. An Asus board can be set to provide 3.6 volts IO. Quality
ram is very overvolt tolerant, and IO above 3.3 will really make ram
perform extremely well while preventing errors.

Asus or Soyo, the Asus is a little better, the Soyo is cheaper :)
Both are high quality, very stable boards.

Stay away from the PCTel and Lucent LT WinModems! There are a few PCI

  3Com 3CP5610
  Actiontec PCI56012-01CW

these two are the ones you are most likely to find in a store. Please see

I tend to wait for "official" releases of Debian. It just seems easier
to wait for the official release than wait for a three day download. (I
can't wait for my DSL connection, maybe then I'll change my mind.) As
it is right now I can order a CD from LSL or Cheapbytes and have it
shipped faster than I can download the ISO of any distribution.

is a good starting point. Using the TrueType font server can give you a
much larger selection of fonts, some of which look a lot better than the

The D-Link DE220 is not really plug and play, it just looks an acts like
it is. I inherited about 15 of these and had the same problem. First off,
get the setup program from windrivers.com. To make it work, boot up in
FreeDOS or some other DOS, and run the a:\setup\setup from the driver
disk, and then change it to the correct io and irq. I think the default
on most of them was io=320 and irq=10. This program will rewrite the rom
on the card. Reboot, and configure linux accordingly.
