I got a Diamond Rio for Christmas and have searched for a way to load it
with Linux. So far, I've come up empty handed. I've searched Diamond's
web site and they have no useful tech info on the interface, which I
suspect is why there is no third party interface to this potentially
cool toy. If there were specs, I'd hack together a loader. Diamond has
just ignored my requests for information.
I know it has lose98 software with it, but I don't have that, nor am I
ever likely to (100% microsoft free and planning to stay that way).
Well, I've not even opened the box yet and was wondering if anybody
knows if it can be used with Linux before I return it and buy a diskman?

This may not be the complete solution, but it is something to consider. The first
issue is your vfat32 partition. That is a kernel issue and not RedHat specific. I
have read that kernel 2.0.36 is able to access a vfat32 partition. I can't verify
that, but I am using a development kernel 2.1.132 which has no problem with my
Win98 vfat32 partition. Your problem as I see it, is that the basic kernel image
you have downloaded isn't set up to handle a vfat32 partition. I know with your
wining personality you could find someone who can build you a custom kernel image
with the necessary modules built in so that it can access your vfat32 partition.
Then use windows to download everything you need, to your 7 GB drive. Oh and you
need loadlin. There's HOWTOs available via HTML on how to use loadlin. Reboot to a
dos prompt and boot linux from your vfat32 partition using loadlin and the
customized kernel image. This would get around your ethernet card problem, until
you have a full Linux system running.
Also I would think you need more then just 2 floppy disks. You would need the
entire base system on floppys. That way you would have all the basic drivers
available, such as the ethernet drivers, vfat driver and a basic ftp application.
I might be wrong, but on kernel versions before 2.0.36 the vfat driver allowed you
to access a win95 partition with its long file names. Starting with kernel 2.0.36
it is able to access a vfat32 partition. I'm sure that would require more then 2
floppy disks. For example, with Debian, it requires a total of 6 floppy disks. But
what do I know
For what it's worth - Good Luck

: The weird thing is I can cat to it, just not with lpr. maybe I need a newer
: distro of lpr?!?
Under 2.1.131 I had no problem printing after adjusting the /etc/printcap
file but found that I couldn't "lprm - " a print queue. It was apparently
a permissions thing since "chmod 2511 /usr/bin/lprm" cured it - my lprm
and print queue directory both are group lp and the directory permissions
didn't permit an ordinary user to write to it. My /usr/bin/lpr already
had those permissions.

Hello:
I cannot figure this one out. I want to emulate
a 3-button mouse with a Permedia2 X-server and a standard
2-button MS mouse. I have tried several different
configurations with XF86Config with no luck. Also, the
3-button emulator works fine when I am not in X Windows.
Thanks.

Hi,
my new home-grown machine uses 8 Meg Matrox Millennium II AGP card.
I had to get the latest and greatest XF86_SVGA ( I believe from sunsite
).
Seems to work OK now. ( It didn't with the driver from RH 5.2 CD ).

Note, if you run the PCI bus at 100 Mhz, I would expect everything to break.
What you meant to say was that you would be running the FSB (front-side bus, ie
memory) at 100 Mhz. In such a configuration, the PCI bus is run at 33 Mhz (ie,
the PCI bus speed is not 1/2 of the FSB speed, but has its own clocking). At
that speed nothing should break, since thats what PCI is spec'ed to run at.
Note, older motherboards when running the FSB faster (say at 75 Mhz), would
also run the PCI bus faster (at 1/2 the speed of the FSB, or 37.5 in the case
of 75 Mhz). In that case, various things would not work (depends on the card,
though typically you would see that the EIDE subsystem would usually fail
first).

Yes many AGP video cards are supported. If you look on the XFree86

Hi there
I'm a newbie at this also, but I know I had to comment out the desktop
size
in my window manager also...I use fvwm and it listed the desktop size as
3x2 so I had to change that to 1x1 - so check your window managers' .rc
file
also
see you, hope it helps
